How G2 Science (Chemistry, Biology) Works | SEC Examination Preparation

Three students review written work at a shared desk, with one pointing to the notebook while another writes.

How G2 Science (Chemistry, Biology) works for Singapore’s 2027 Secondary Education Certificate (SEC): students taking subject K225 are examined in Chemistry and Biology through two multiple-choice papers and two structured papers. This practical guide explains the paper scheme, connects the topics and shows what meaningful revision should look like.

Chemistry asks how matter is structured and how substances change. Biology asks how living organisms are organised, obtain materials, transport them and sustain life. The disciplines share powerful habits: understand a model, recognise relevant evidence, interpret data and explain a mechanism. A student can remember a definition yet lose a mark by applying it to the wrong situation.

K225 is the Chemistry–Biology combination, not K223 Physics–Chemistry or K224 Physics–Biology. Correct subject identification matters because the papers and topics differ. Our assessment details come from SEAB’s 2027 G2 syllabus directory and its 2027 Science document covering K223, K224 and K225. All examples in this article are newly written learning illustrations rather than official examination questions.

The exact 2027 SEC K225 assessment scheme

The former subject-code reference was 5107. K225 requires Chemistry Papers 3 and 4 and Biology Papers 5 and 6. Physics Papers 1 and 2 belong to the other combinations and are not part of K225. Each subject pair is taken in a single sitting of 1 hour 15 minutes, with a recommended maximum of 30 minutes for its multiple-choice component.

Examination componentMarksWeight of K225 resultAnswer requirement
Paper 3: Chemistry MCQ2020%20 compulsory multiple-choice items
Paper 4: Chemistry structured3030%Section A: 22 compulsory marks; Section B: choose one eight-mark question
Paper 5: Biology MCQ2020%20 compulsory multiple-choice items
Paper 6: Biology structured3030%Section A: 22 compulsory marks; Section B: choose one eight-mark question

Chemistry and Biology each contribute 50%. A strong Chemistry learner who neglects Biology still risks half the result. Use marked work to identify where marks are actually being lost; do not assume all weak performance is caused by insufficient memorisation.

In each structured paper the last compulsory question in Section A is worth eight marks; Section B is another eight marks with two options, of which only one is answered. A student should not waste time completing both options. A full practice session should model the combined 75-minute duration of the MCQ and structured component for that discipline.

What are the papers assessing besides factual recall?

The official Science assessment objectives approximate 45% knowledge with understanding, 45% handling information and solving problems, and 10% experimental skills and investigations within theory papers. The percentages are not a promise that question types appear in fixed order. Memorising facts without learning to apply them leaves a large part of the assessment untouched.

A Chemistry question may ask for a suitable method to separate an unfamiliar mixture. A Biology question may use a diagram of movement across a membrane. Both test whether the learner understands the relevant principle and can identify the details needed to use it. The marks come from answering the specific question, not from reproducing every sentence in the revision guide.

How the Chemistry component works

Nine topics fit into three linked ideas

SEAB organises Chemistry into Matter — Structures and Properties, Chemical Reactions, and Chemistry in a Sustainable World. The topics are Experimental Chemistry, The Particulate Nature of Matter, Chemical Bonding and Structure, Chemical Calculations, Acid–Base Chemistry, Qualitative Analysis, Patterns in the Periodic Table, Organic Chemistry, and Maintaining Air Quality.

There is a reason for this arrangement. Particles and bonding explain material properties. Properties help us choose purification or identification methods. Chemical equations model the rearrangement of matter. The real-world units ask how chemical knowledge relates to the environment and decisions affecting society.

Separation questions require thinking about properties

Suppose sand is mixed with salt dissolved in water. Filtration can retain insoluble sand while allowing the salt solution through. Evaporation or crystallisation can then recover the dissolved solid under suitable conditions. A learner who proposes ‘filter everything’ has memorised an apparatus name but overlooked what filtration actually separates.

For an unfamiliar mixture, ask: which materials are present, what relevant properties differ, and which method exploits the difference? Paper chromatography, distillation and fractional distillation are distinct techniques. The correct choice is driven by the given substances, not by which technique happened to appear in the most recent worksheet.

Particles and atomic structure are models

Particle models help explain why solids, liquids and gases behave differently. They are simplified representations, not photographs. The structure of an atom includes protons and neutrons in the nucleus and electrons arranged in shells at this syllabus level. Do not confuse an atom, an ion and a molecule or replace an explanation with an inaccurate picture.

A question about boiling or melting may require the learner to explain what changes about particle movement and interactions. The student should not write that atoms suddenly vanish when a substance changes state. Describe the physical process in a manner that respects the conservation of matter.

Chemical equations are governed by conservation

Consider magnesium reacting with oxygen. The correctly balanced illustrative symbol equation is 2Mg + O₂ → 2MgO. The number of magnesium and oxygen atoms matches on both sides. The coefficients express reaction proportions. Editing the chemical formula of the substance merely to make a guessed equation balance would be scientifically wrong.

In numerical problems, the quantities given should have clear meanings and units. An expression involving mass is not interchangeable with one involving volume merely because the numbers are similar. Write the underlying relationship, check what each number represents and interpret the result in the requested units.

Acid–base chemistry and qualitative analysis depend on observations

A student may see bubbles and immediately name the gas. But bubbling is an observation, not a definitive identification. Qualitative analysis uses evidence from appropriate tests to distinguish substances. If the question asks for a test, give the relevant procedure and expected observation when known, rather than listing unrelated chemicals.

A successful scientific explanation distinguishes what was observed, what may be inferred and what additional information could confirm it. This habit is also valuable in reading news about scientific discoveries, where confident language can sometimes overstate what a small experiment actually shows.

Organic chemistry and air quality are more than lists

Organic Chemistry and Maintaining Air Quality appear in the K225 syllabus. Students should learn the specified structures, processes and applications, then practise interpreting unfamiliar evidence. If a data table shows an air-quality indicator over time, begin with the measured pattern and units before discussing a likely mechanism or social response.

For a judgement about environmental measures, be precise about benefits, limitations and scientific evidence. Scientific literacy does not require a student to memorise one prescribed opinion; it requires a defensible conclusion that fits the given situation.

How the Biology component works

Eight topics explain how living systems sustain themselves

The 2027 Biology section covers Cell Structure and Organisation, Movement of Substances, Biological Molecules, Nutrition in Humans, Transport in Humans, Respiration in Humans, Infectious Diseases in Humans, and Nutrition and Transport in Flowering Plants. Learn these topics as a connected biological system.

An organism needs materials, structures that process and transport them, and cellular processes that use them. A pupil who can trace these relationships is better positioned to answer unfamiliar questions than one who can only reproduce memorised paragraphs about digestion or leaves.

Cell structure should always be related to function

Red blood cells help transport oxygen, and root hair cells are adapted for absorbing water and mineral ions. The useful question is not only ‘What is this cell called?’ but ‘Which structural feature helps it perform the function?’ A correct name without a causal relationship may not answer an explanation question.

Use a diagram that moves from cells to tissues, organs, organ systems and organism. This shows why transport and nutrition are properties of interacting biological levels, not actions of one isolated cell. Do not claim that cells make deliberate choices about where substances should move.

Diffusion, osmosis and direction of movement

Diffusion concerns net particle movement down a concentration gradient. Osmosis concerns net water movement across a partially permeable membrane under appropriate conditions. When a problem changes the direction of a diagram or uses a different concentration, a memorised arrow is unreliable. Identify the substance, boundary and relative conditions first.

Suppose a cell is placed in a solution and changes size. The observation describes what happened; the explanation must identify a scientifically plausible net water movement and the conditions that support it. ‘The cell wants to drink’ may be memorable but cannot substitute for a correct mechanism.

Digestion, transport and cellular respiration fit together

Nutrition involves obtaining and processing food, including digestion and absorption. Transport distributes substances through the body. Cellular respiration involves the release of energy from suitable materials within cells. Breathing supports gas exchange, but breathing is not identical to cellular respiration.

A simple concept map helps: material enters the digestive system; useful absorbed nutrients are transported; oxygen reaches cells; relevant cell processes use resources and release energy. The exact steps should match the assessed question. An explanation about the circulatory system is incomplete if it never states why the transported material matters.

Infectious diseases need accurate, evidence-based language

Distinguish a disease-causing agent from a symptom, transmission from risk, and treatment from prevention. When reading an unfamiliar case study, answer from the supplied evidence and the relevant biology rather than asserting an unsupported diagnosis. Practical activities involving biological samples must follow authorised school rules and suitable supervision.

Plants have nutrition and transport systems too

The syllabus covers nutrition and transport in flowering plants. Students should relate root, stem and leaf functions to the movement and use of materials. Photosynthesis produces useful organic material in appropriate conditions; water uptake and transport are related but are not themselves a synonym for photosynthesis.

If a graph records water uptake, a correct answer first describes the actual values and trend. Any proposed explanation should acknowledge whether the stated conditions allow that conclusion. A single graph without full context rarely proves the whole mechanism.

How Chemistry and Biology reinforce one another

Biological molecules are chemical substances

Carbohydrates, proteins and fats are molecules with biological roles. Chemistry’s ideas of particles, matter and transformation help learners understand why substances have different properties; Biology explains how living systems use relevant substances. Linking the two is useful, but students must keep the examined discipline’s actual task in view.

A question about digestion is not answered by an unrelated reaction equation. A chemical calculation cannot be solved with a generic paragraph about healthy eating. Use the common scientific habits while respecting the unique processes and terminology of each subject.

Investigation means controlling variables

If a school experiment changes temperature to examine a rate, the student should specify the independent variable, the measured dependent variable and the relevant controlled conditions. Saying ‘make it fair’ without identifying a condition tells an examiner very little about the method.

Questions on experiments may ask pupils to interpret graphs, read measurements, identify a weakness or suggest an improvement. Name the actual source of uncertainty and explain how an improvement would address it. A vague instruction to ‘use better equipment’ is not always sufficient.

Do not change observations to fit a theory

An unusual result might arise from measurement error or from a feature worth investigating. Students should not silently discard values merely to produce a smooth line. Reliable science depends on honest data, repeatability and conclusions no stronger than the results justify. This same discipline helps avoid plausible-looking but unsupported answers in MCQ revision.

Answering MCQs and structured questions

A correct guess can hide a problem

After a multiple-choice exercise, ask the student not only to mark which letter was correct but why that option is supported. If they cannot explain why another plausible option fails, the topic should remain in the error log despite a lucky correct answer.

The command word changes the task

  • Name or state: identify the specific item or fact, concisely.
  • Describe: report an observed feature, pattern or change.
  • Explain: connect evidence to a causal scientific mechanism.
  • Suggest or predict: apply knowledge to the given novel situation.
  • Calculate: use appropriate relation, valid working and units.
  • Evaluate: discuss a real strength or limitation and its consequences.

For example, ‘the solution became blue’ may describe a result but does not explain why it occurred. In Biology, ‘the graph increases’ may describe a trend but does not explain which biological process produced it. The student needs to recognise the operation requested by the examiner.

Section B is a choice between two eight-mark questions

Read the entire pair of options in each structured paper, including later parts. Select the one in which you can answer the required details accurately, then complete only that question. Practise that decision under realistic time limits, especially when multiple subparts have different command words.

What makes a good correction exercise?

Do not simply hand over the model answer. Locate the first error—wrong observation, formula, concept, graph reading or scientific explanation. Ask the student to repair it, then test the same idea with a new diagram or unfamiliar wording. If the skill only works on the original sheet, the revision has not transferred.

Four weeks are a cycle for targeted practice, not a guarantee that a child can learn the entire syllabus from scratch in four weeks. Repeat the cycle, adjust to school feedback and leave time for sleep and other subjects. The value comes from the feedback after the paper, not simply from finishing it.

How a focused three-student tutorial could operate

  • Short retrieval of one old Chemistry idea and one old Biology idea.
  • Diagnosis of a real marked misconception from each student.
  • Explanation of the missing principle using a simple diagram or worked method.
  • Guided practice with varied conditions rather than copied examples.
  • An independent mixed question without prompts.
  • A clear error record and a manageable continuation task.

This suggested approach draws on the diagnostic, guided and independent-practice logic of eduKateSG’s Clementi three-pupil tutorial reference. It does not claim that any particular K225 tuition class is currently available. Confirm appropriate subject expertise and scheduling directly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 2027 SEC code for G2 Chemistry–Biology Science?

K225. The old reference code is 5107. The three combined-science combinations have different codes and different paper selections.

Which four papers are compulsory for K225?

Chemistry Papers 3 and 4 and Biology Papers 5 and 6. They form one subject result; students cannot choose only their preferred discipline.

How are Chemistry and Biology weighted?

Each contributes 50%. Their MCQ papers each account for 20% of the total and their structured papers each account for 30%.

How long is each session?

One hour and fifteen minutes for the Chemistry pair and one hour and fifteen minutes for the Biology pair, taken in their respective examination sessions.

Is a Periodic Table provided?

Yes. It is included for the Chemistry MCQ and structured papers under the published K225 scheme. Students must still learn to interpret and apply it.

Does K225 have a separate practical paper?

The published assessment format lists MCQ and structured theory papers. Experimental skills and investigations are assessed through theory questions; school practical work remains important.

Is K225 easier than K224 or K223?

Not universally. The combinations cover different sciences, and students vary in their foundations. Check the child’s registration, school coverage and actual marked work rather than relying on reputation.

Can tuition guarantee a distinction?

No. Good teaching can diagnose weaknesses and guide practice, but outcomes depend on many factors. If school learning and self-study are working well, additional tuition may be unnecessary.
