How G2 SEC Grades and Results Work | SEC Examination Preparation

Three students work together around notebooks and open books in a bright study room overlooking neighbouring buildings.

From 2027, Singapore’s Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) records each subject and the G-level at which the student sat for it. A G2 subject receives grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6. G2 follows the former N(A)-Level grading structure; G1 uses A–E, while G3 uses A1, A2, B3, B4, C5, C6, D7, E8 and 9. This guide explains those labels, when conversion is used, and how results relate to future education choices.

A key distinction: the actual grade printed on the certificate is not replaced by its mapped value. Mapping applies only when the relevant post-secondary admission aggregate requires a subject taken at a more demanding level to count at a less demanding level. It does not imply that two syllabuses have identical standards.

Information below is grounded in the official SEAB SEC grading and examination information, the SEAB grade-mapping explanation and 2027 G2 subject list. This is a parent guide, not an additional SEC subject. Only SEAB determines the national grade, and course admission must be checked with its institution.

Exactly what G2 grades mean

SEC levelCorresponding former examinationOfficial grades
G1GCE N(T)A, B, C, D, E
G2GCE N(A)1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
G3GCE O-LevelA1, A2, B3, B4, C5, C6, D7, E8, 9

Grade 1 is the strongest G2 grade. The numerical value is a category used in the national examination, not a raw mark and not the number of marks lost. A grade 2 at G2 is not printed as ‘B4’ or ‘A2’ simply because those grades may be considered together in a mapping table.

Why you should not invent percentage cutoffs

School papers have different topics, marking, difficulty and sampling. A student who scores 75% on a particular school test is not guaranteed G2 grade 1 in the SEC. Similarly, a school grade trend can indicate improvement without establishing the national grade boundary. There is no responsible basis for asserting an exact 2027 grade-1 percentage before the examination is marked.

What a school paper can do is help locate the student’s specific difficulty: concept, language, calculation, textual evidence, timing or instructions. That diagnosis is more useful than a confident but unsupported prediction.

When does SEAB map one subject grade to another level?

Original G3 subject gradeMapped G2 grade when applicable
A1, A2, B31
B4, C5, C62
D73
E84

This is SEAB’s conversion table for an aggregate that needs a G3 result expressed at G2. There is no listed conversion to G2 grade 6 from a G3 grade. Grade mapping is a calculation rule, not a retrospective downgrade or replacement of the awarded examination result.

Example with a student taking G3 and G2 subjects

Imagine a candidate scores G3 Mathematics B4 and G2 Science 2. The certificate records Mathematics at G3 with B4 and Science at G2 with grade 2. For an admission aggregate that accepts mapped G3 subjects at G2, B4 maps to a G2 2 for that calculation. Mathematics does not suddenly become a G2 examination subject.

Where a G3 grade must contribute to an aggregate expressed at G1, SEAB applies G3-to-G2 mapping first, followed by G2-to-G1 mapping. Do not invent the reverse conversion: a G2 grade does not automatically become a G3 result for a JC or another route.

Why grade mapping is conditional

The purpose is to calculate specified admission aggregates, such as ELMAB3 for applicable PFP and Higher Nitec admissions or ELR2B2 for polytechnic admission as SEAB describes. Each route has subject requirements and minimum entry criteria beyond the conversion table. A candidate is not automatically eligible merely because a few mapped numbers appear favourable.

One SEC certificate, potentially different levels

SEAB says candidates receive a single Singapore–Cambridge SEC certificate with the subjects and subject levels taken. A student can offer English at G2, Mathematics at G3 and another subject at G1 where permitted. This fits Full Subject-Based Banding: different learning strengths can be represented by different examination levels.

What is the certificate-award threshold?

SEAB states that a certificate is awarded if a candidate obtains E8 or better in a G3 subject, grade 5 or better in a G2 subject, or grade D or better in a G1 subject. This describes a condition for award of the qualification, not a guarantee of admission to a particular post-secondary institution.

A family should distinguish four things: the examination grade, whether an SEC certificate is awarded, whether an aggregate can be computed for a course, and whether the candidate meets that course’s published admissions conditions. Those steps are related, but not the same.

Does the SEC erase subject-level differences?

No. The level is explicitly recorded for each subject. The examination standard and grading structure at each level remain aligned to their former corresponding standards. One common certificate is a reporting change, not a requirement that every child sit the same syllabus.

2027 examination calendar and January 2028 results

PeriodWhat SEAB saysWhat parents should do
Before September–November 2027 written papersNon-written oral, listening and other applicable components are scheduled before written examinationsCheck school notices and the relevant subject timetable
September 2027Written English Language and Mother Tongue examinationsPrepare for a September rather than assumed October sitting
October–November 2027Written examinations for the remaining subjectsFollow the final subject-specific timetable
January 2028Common results release for the 2027 SEC examinationWait for SEAB’s confirmed date and collection instructions

These periods are published general SEC arrangements, not a list of exact 2027 reporting times. The 2027 SEC replaces separate N- and O-Level timetables with a common schedule. Official national examination dates and any change to arrangements must be checked directly with SEAB and the school.

What about private candidates?

SEAB explains that private candidates register via its Candidates Portal subject to eligibility and the syllabuses offered in that year. More specific SEC registration procedures are expected from SEAB in 2027. A school-candidate guide cannot determine private-candidate availability or eligibility.

How grades affect post-secondary decisions

Start with the intended course, not only the aggregate

For an intended Polytechnic Foundation Programme, Higher Nitec or polytechnic diploma pathway, parents should identify the actual programme, intake year and course-specific requirements. A mapped G3 result can be used where the aggregate calls for it, but another required subject may still be missing or below its minimum.

Different aggregates include particular subjects or subject categories; the student should not automatically add the five best-looking numbers from a certificate. The admitting institution’s current rules matter more than any informal calculator.

Posting Group is not the whole future

A student may begin Secondary 1 in Posting Group 2 but offer a more demanding subject later if school and MOE conditions are met. Conversely, a student might need to adjust an individual subject level for readiness and workload. The final SEC subject combination helps determine what routes are available, not merely the Posting Group at entry.

This is why a parent should keep a table showing every subject and its actual G-level. ‘My child is mostly G2’ does not answer which admissions requirements can be met. The relevant English, Mathematics, Science or Humanities subject may need to be identified individually.

Ask the school these questions

  • Which exact subject codes and levels is the student registered for?
  • What pathway and intake year is the student considering?
  • Which minimum subject grades and levels are compulsory for that route?
  • Which mapped subjects, if any, can count in the aggregate?
  • What realistic alternative options are available if one target is missed?

Using grades to improve learning before the results

A mark tells you what happened, not why

If a student loses five marks in algebra, it matters whether the reason was a wrong operation, a negative sign or a misread condition. If marks are lost in Science, distinguish a missing concept from poor evidence evaluation. If a composition loses marks, distinguish grammatical control from failure to address the task.

The repair should target the first incorrect decision. Ask the learner to explain their answer, teach the missing idea, then use a fresh question that tests the same skill. Copying a corrected model answer is not proof of transfer.

A four-week readiness cycle

WeekActivityEvidence of improvement
1 — DiagnoseSample the actual paper types and classify repeated errorsSpecific priorities, not just one total score
2 — RepairTeach one foundation and one question-interpretation issueLearner handles new equivalent questions independently
3 — StabiliseMix current and older topics with spaced retrievalLess repetition of the original mistakes
4 — ApplyPractise representative timed sections and review decisionsMore complete answers and clearer next targets

Four weeks is an organisation cycle, not a guaranteed grade outcome. Some students need months to build language, numerical fluency or subject concepts. High ambitions are useful only when paired with specific evidence of stronger understanding.

The diagnose–explain–transfer approach reflects the logic of eduKateSG’s Clementi three-pupil tutorial reference. It is a teaching example, not a promise that every student or group will reach a distinction.

Frequently asked questions

What is the highest G2 SEC grade?

Grade 1; G2 uses grades 1 through 6.

Is G2 grade 2 the same certificate entry as G3 B4?

No. G3 B4 can map to G2 2 for an applicable aggregate, but each result remains recorded at its actual subject level.

Will the 2027 SEC results be issued in December 2027?

No. SEAB says results for the 2027 SEC will be released in January 2028, with the exact date to be announced.

Can a G2 grade 5 support award of a certificate?

SEAB lists grade 5 or better in a G2 subject among its certificate award conditions. Course admission criteria are separate.

Can one student receive grades at G1, G2 and G3?

Yes, on one SEC certificate, according to the subjects and levels taken.

Does a G2 grade guarantee admission to PFP or Polytechnic?

No. The relevant aggregate, subject requirements, available courses and admission rules must all be satisfied.

Can a tutor promise grade 1 from school test percentages?

No. School results can inform diagnosis, but national grades and boundaries are determined by the examination process.

What families can do next

Write down each registered subject and its G-level. Beside it, record the student’s latest paper results and two specific areas to repair. Then check the intended course’s entry requirements with the school. This gives a learning plan and a progression plan without treating a single grade as the child’s identity.
