How Singapore Connects | IRAS, Tax Filing and Digital Payments

Bukit Timah Road near Sixth Avenue with traffic, shops and bank branches

How Singapore connects is not only about earning money.

A modern economy also needs a trusted way to declare income, calculate tax, issue assessments and collect payment.

Did you know that much of Singapore’s individual income-tax process now happens through pre-filled data, Singpass, myTax Portal, Auto-Inclusion and digital payment rails?

The employee sees a tax bill.

The system sees employer-reported income, taxpayer identity, reliefs, filing status, assessment rules, payment schedules and account records.

This article follows Singapore’s tax connection layer: IRAS, myTax Portal, Tax Season, Auto-Inclusion Scheme, No-Filing Service, Direct Notice of Assessment, Notice of Assessment, GIRO and the way yearly income becomes a verified tax record.

Payroll and CPF are explored in How Singapore Connects | Payroll, CPF Contributions and Retirement Savings. Digital identity is explored in How Singapore Connects | Singpass, MyInfo and Digital Identity. Here we ask the tax question: how does income turn into a national financial obligation?

Did You Know? Tax Season 2026 Ran from 1 March to 18 April

IRAS’s current Tax Season 2026 guidance says individuals who were required to file could do so from 1 March to 18 April 2026.

IRAS uses the Year of Assessment system.

YA 2026 generally refers to income earned during calendar year 2025.

The Tax Year Looks Backward

Earn in 2025.

File or verify in 2026.

Receive assessment in 2026.

The tax process uses the previous calendar year as its income base.

Not Everyone Has to File

IRAS separates taxpayers into different workflows.

Some must file.

Some are placed under the No-Filing Service.

Some may receive a Direct Notice of Assessment based on data already available to IRAS.

Did You Know? The General Filing Threshold Includes Income Above S$22,000

IRAS’s current filing guidance says individuals are generally required to file if, in the preceding calendar year, total income exceeded S$22,000, self-employment net profit exceeded S$6,000, or they were non-residents deriving Singapore income, subject to filing notifications and applicable rules.

The taxpayer should still follow the specific filing notification received.

The Filing Notification Is the First Branch

IRAS sends filing notifications through SMS, email or letter.

The taxpayer logs into myTax Portal and sees the actual instruction for that year.

The same person may have a different filing requirement in a different year.

myTax Portal Is the Digital Front Door

IRAS’s current e-filing guide directs individuals to myTax Portal using Singpass or a Singpass Foreign user Account where applicable.

Filing, tax bills, payments, amendments and preferences all converge there.

Singpass Connects the Person to the Tax Record

The tax system needs to know that the filer is the right person.

Singpass provides digital authentication.

The personal identity layer and financial record become connected.

The Auto-Inclusion Scheme Moves Payroll Data Upstream

When an employer participates in the Auto-Inclusion Scheme, employment income is transmitted directly to IRAS.

The employee does not need to manually type the same income again.

Did You Know? Employer Auto-Inclusion Does Not Always Mean the Employee Has Nothing to Do

IRAS’s current 2026 communications explicitly warn that having an AIS employer does not automatically mean the employee has filed.

If IRAS tells the taxpayer to file, the taxpayer must still submit the return by the due date.

The Difference Is Data Submission Versus Tax Filing

Employer submits payroll data.

Taxpayer submits or verifies the personal tax return.

Those are related but distinct actions.

No-Filing Service Uses Pre-Filled Information

Under the No-Filing Service, IRAS tells selected taxpayers that they do not need to submit a full return if the pre-filled information is correct.

The taxpayer can still log in between 1 March and 18 April to verify the data and make changes if needed.

No-Filing Does Not Mean No Responsibility

A pre-filled return can still contain information the taxpayer needs to correct.

Reliefs may need updating.

Rental or other income may need declaring.

The taxpayer remains responsible for accuracy.

Direct Notice of Assessment Goes One Step Further

Under the Direct Notice of Assessment approach, IRAS may finalise the tax bill based on income data, previous relief information and other records without requiring a separate tax return first.

The taxpayer reviews the bill and amends it if something is wrong.

Automation Moves the Tax Process from Filing to Verification

Old model: taxpayer enters everything.

Newer model: system already knows much of the data.

The taxpayer checks exceptions and corrections.

The work shifts from transcription to verification.

Pre-Filled Data Still Needs Context

Employment income may be correct.

Rental income may not be pre-filled.

A relief claimed last year may no longer apply.

The system knows what has been submitted to it.

The taxpayer knows what changed.

Did You Know? First-Time Relief Claims May Need Manual Action

IRAS’s 2026 guidance notes that taxpayers under No-Filing Service should not assume every personal relief is automatically pre-filled, especially for first-time claims.

The review step matters.

Tax Filing Is a Data-Reconciliation Exercise

Employer data.

Bank or third-party data.

Taxpayer declarations.

Relief records.

IRAS combines multiple sources into one assessment.

The Income Tax Return Is the Taxpayer’s Correction Layer

If required to file, the taxpayer reviews pre-filled data and adds or adjusts information not already captured.

The return becomes the taxpayer’s formal declaration.

Documents Often Stay with the Taxpayer

IRAS’s paper-filing guidance says many supporting documents such as receipts and statements generally do not need to be submitted unless IRAS requests them.

The taxpayer still needs to retain relevant records according to the applicable rules.

The Tax System Separates Filing from Evidence Storage

Declare now.

Keep proof.

Produce it if requested.

That reduces unnecessary document transmission.

Did You Know? More Than 98% of Individual Taxpayers e-File

IRAS says more than 98% of individual taxpayers use electronic filing.

Paper filing remains available for those unable to e-file, but digital filing is now overwhelmingly the norm.

The Tax Return Has Different Forms for Different Taxpayers

Form B1 for tax-resident individuals.

Form B for self-employed individuals.

Form M for non-residents.

The legal form reflects the taxpayer’s income context.

Self-Employment Adds Business Records

Revenue.

Allowable expenses.

Net profit.

Accounts or records.

The personal tax system connects directly to small-business accounting.

That Connects to ACRA

A registered sole proprietor from How Singapore Connects | ACRA, UEN and Business Registration may still report business income through the individual tax framework depending on the legal structure.

Business identity and tax identity overlap differently by entity type.

Companies Use a Different Corporate Tax Cycle

A company is a separate legal entity and files corporate income tax under its own rules.

Individual income tax and corporate income tax are connected through the wider revenue system but follow different forms and deadlines.

Did You Know? Corporate Income Tax Returns Were Due 30 November 2026

IRAS’s current 2026 due-date calendar lists 30 November 2026 as the corporate income tax return filing deadline for Form C-S, C-S (Lite) and C.

The national tax calendar contains several parallel filing clocks.

GST Has Another Clock

GST-registered businesses file GST returns by the applicable accounting period.

Quarterly deadlines can fall throughout the year.

Tax is not one annual event for every organisation.

The Notice of Assessment Is the Tax Bill

After filing or automatic assessment, IRAS issues the Notice of Assessment.

That document shows the assessed income, tax payable and relevant details.

The Bill Is a Computed Decision

Income.

Deductions.

Reliefs.

Tax rates.

Rebates.

The assessment applies tax law to the taxpayer’s record.

Digital Notices Replace Much Paper

Taxpayers with digital notice preferences receive SMS or email notifications when documents are ready in myTax Portal.

The notice is not the whole tax bill.

It tells the user where the official bill is available.

Did You Know? Tax Is Payable Within One Month of the Bill

IRAS’s Tax Season 2026 guidance says individual income tax is payable within one month from the date of the tax bill unless covered by an approved GIRO arrangement or other applicable payment plan.

The assessment creates a payment clock.

You Still Pay While an Objection Is Being Reviewed

IRAS says taxpayers generally must pay the assessed tax by the due date even if they disagree with the bill.

If the assessment is later reduced, the credit is refunded under the relevant process.

GIRO Converts One Large Bill into Monthly Flow

IRAS offers GIRO arrangements with monthly interest-free deductions of up to 12 months for eligible taxpayers.

The tax obligation is the same.

The cash-flow profile changes.

Tax Payment Connects to Banking

That places IRAS beside How Singapore Connects | ATMs, Cards, Cash and Everyday Banking.

The tax bill becomes a scheduled transfer from a bank account.

Payment Plans Can Be Managed Digitally

IRAS says taxpayers facing financial difficulty and using GIRO may request a longer payment arrangement through the relevant digital service in myTax Portal, subject to approval.

The Tax System Includes a Correction Window

Before the due date, an individual who already e-filed can generally re-file once by 18 April.

The new filing replaces the earlier one.

After the Tax Bill, the Correction Path Changes

IRAS says taxpayers can use the Amend Tax Bill digital service within 30 days from the date of the tax bill where applicable.

The same correction moves into a different procedural stage after assessment.

Did You Know? IRAS Can Issue an Estimated Assessment for Non-Filing

IRAS’s late-filing guidance says it may issue an estimated Notice of Assessment if a required taxpayer does not file on time.

The taxpayer still has to pay the estimated tax and regularise the filing.

Late Filing Is Not Just a Missed Reminder

IRAS can impose composition amounts and recovery actions, and late or non-filing can become an offence.

The annual filing date is a legal deadline.

The Tax System Connects to Payroll

Employer payroll data from How Singapore Connects | Payroll, CPF Contributions and Retirement Savings can flow through the Auto-Inclusion Scheme into IRAS.

Salary payment and tax reporting become one connected employer workflow.

The Tax System Connects to Property

Rental income can become part of an individual tax return.

Property tax runs on a different basis and timetable.

One physical asset can create multiple tax relationships.

The Tax System Connects to Platform Work

IRAS has been expanding pre-filled and direct-assessment arrangements for selected self-employed and platform-worker data supplied by intermediaries.

The gig economy becomes more integrated into digital tax reporting.

The Tax System Connects to Donations

Approved donation information can be auto-included where submitted through the relevant schemes.

A charitable act can flow automatically into the tax record.

The Tax System Connects to Life Events

Marriage.

Children.

Caregiving.

Employment changes.

Some relief eligibility depends on life circumstances.

The taxpayer’s civil life affects the financial record.

The Best Tax System Reduces Duplicate Data Entry

Employer already knows salary.

Approved institution already knows donation.

Government already knows selected identity information.

Digital integration allows the taxpayer to verify instead of retyping.

But Pre-Fill Makes Checking More Important, Not Less

Automation can create complacency.

The taxpayer sees a completed form and assumes it must be right.

The correct habit is still to verify.

Tax Data Is Highly Sensitive

Income.

Assets.

Family circumstances.

Banking details.

The system therefore depends on secure authentication and careful handling.

That Connects to Cybersecurity

Tax phishing and impersonation risks connect directly to How Singapore Connects | Cybersecurity, Scam Alerts and Digital Trust.

Users should access myTax Portal through official channels rather than links in suspicious messages.

A Small Example: AIS Employee

Employer submits employment income to IRAS.

Taxpayer receives filing notification.

Logs into myTax Portal.

Employment income is already pre-filled.

Checks reliefs and other income.

Files if required.

Receives tax bill.

Pays by GIRO.

The employer and taxpayer have contributed different parts of the same record.

A Small Example: No-Filing Service

Taxpayer receives NFS notification.

Logs in between 1 March and 18 April.

Checks pre-filled income and reliefs.

Everything is correct.

No return is submitted.

IRAS finalises the assessment.

No-filing has worked because the data was already sufficient.

A Small Example: Correction After Bill

Taxpayer notices relief was missing.

Tax bill has already been issued.

Uses Amend Tax Bill within 30 days where applicable.

IRAS reviews the change.

Assessment is adjusted.

Any resulting credit is refunded according to the process.

What Can Break the Tax Connection?

  • ignoring a filing notification;
  • assuming AIS means no need to file;
  • pre-filled income not checked;
  • rental or other income omitted;
  • relief claimed without eligibility;
  • deadline missed;
  • tax bill not paid within one month;
  • phishing site used instead of official myTax Portal;
  • wrong bank account for GIRO; and
  • taxpayer failing to amend an incorrect assessment promptly.

Digital tax works best when automation and personal verification remain together.
