Which Biology tutor in France should a family choose? Start by identifying whether the pupil needs sciences et technologie at primary level, SVT in collège, SVT in seconde, the spécialité SVT in première or terminale, or the distinct Biologie-écologie option in an agricultural lycée. These are different learning and assessment routes. A teacher who knows one route may not be the right choice for another.
Parents searching for cours particuliers SVT, professeur particulier de biologie, soutien scolaire SVT collège, préparation bac spécialité SVT or online SVT tuition in Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Lille or Toulouse should ask for the current programme and a diagnostic lesson. A tutor should demonstrate how they repair a misconception and help the learner use evidence independently.
The 2027 Bac SVT change that families need to know
The Ministry of National Education issued a new SVT specialty examination note on 17 September 2026, effective from the 2027 baccalauréat session. It replaces the earlier examination note. The written component is 3 hours 30 minutes, worth 15 of the 20 points, and the experimental-competence component accounts for 5 of 20 points for the relevant school candidates.
The 2027 written examination includes two exercises, with attention to scientific reasoning, argument structure, vocabulary and written language. The note assigns specific points to orthographic and syntactic accuracy within the written assessment. This makes a tutor’s ability to teach evidence-based scientific French especially important. It is not enough to know the right Biology facts if the pupil cannot organise a coherent explanation.
The same note specifies different practical arrangements for certain individual candidates, CNED pupils and students in private schools outside contract. A tutor must check the learner’s actual candidate status instead of claiming every candidate takes precisely the same practical format. The 2026 session had its own arrangements, documented separately on éduscol.
Biologie-écologie is not interchangeable with spécialité SVT
A 19 June 2026 order, published on 9 July, addresses the choice between Biologie-écologie, offered in agricultural lycées, and Sciences de la vie et de la Terre. It specifies that the two specialties cannot be combined. Its implementation begins in première at the 2026 rentrée and in terminale at the 2027 rentrée.
This is a real tutor-selection issue. A student studying ecology, agriculture and living systems in an agricultural lycée may need teaching aligned with a different specialty and practical context from a general lycée SVT pupil. Ask the teacher to name the actual programme and examination route before assigning past papers.
Collège, seconde and specialty: diagnosis must change
The official SVT portal links programmes and resources from early schooling through collège and lycée. In collège, the emphasis may be on building observation, explanation, living-system concepts and evidence. In seconde, students develop more connected understanding of life and Earth processes. In the terminal cycle, scientific argument and experimental competence become increasingly important.
A pupil who can label a cell but cannot explain membrane transport needs a conceptual bridge. Another who understands genetics but cannot evaluate documents needs practice with evidence and structured writing. A third who loses points because the response is disorganised needs help expressing reasoning in accurate French. A single test score does not distinguish these gaps.
What a useful first SVT tutoring session looks like
- Bring the current school programme, a marked answer and an unfamiliar question.
- Ask the learner to explain one process without notes.
- Show a new biological diagram or experimental result.
- Ask the tutor to identify the first wrong assumption.
- Request a correction that includes the biological mechanism and supporting evidence.
- Give the pupil a new question without hints.
- Agree on a specific independent learning target and review date.
A strong tutor listens first. They should not start by dictating a perfect paragraph. The pupil needs to understand why the answer works, how evidence supports it and when the same idea applies elsewhere.
Worked example: the 2027 scientific argument
Imagine a fictional dataset showing that a plant’s growth rate increases under one condition. A weak response says ‘the condition is good for plants’. A stronger response describes the measured pattern, identifies the independent and dependent variables, considers controls and proposes a biological mechanism supported by the data. It also explains why the experiment does not prove that every plant species responds identically.
This is a useful way to practise a structured SVT argument without reproducing an official examination question. Ask the student to write an introduction naming the problem, a logically ordered evidence section and a conclusion that answers the question within the limits of the documents. The tutor should correct both science and clarity.
Worked example: genetics and meiosis
For a simplified complete-dominance model, Aa × Aa gives expected genotypes AA, Aa, aA and aa. The expected genotype ratio is 1:2:1 and phenotype ratio 3:1. These are probabilities, not guaranteed outcomes for exactly four offspring. The tutor should make the student state the assumptions rather than memorise a grid.
For an advanced SVT learner, connect the model to meiosis, chromosome segregation and genetic diversity, while respecting the current programme’s level. Ask what happens when one parent is aa, then ask what kinds of inheritance a single-gene model cannot describe. A good teacher connects the model to its biological mechanism.
Worked example: interpreting an ecological graph
Suppose a hypothetical wetland survey records a species in 18 of 30 sample plots at one site and 21 of 25 at another. The observed occurrence rates are 60% and 84%. The difference is 24 percentage points, but the data do not establish that the second wetland is healthier or that one environmental factor caused the difference.
Ask the pupil to identify sampling limitations, comparable plot sizes, season and habitat differences. Then change the figures and ask for an independent comparison. A tutor who teaches this skill is preparing the learner to reason with documents, not just recognise familiar species.
Worked example: respiration and photosynthesis
A pupil may believe that plants respire only at night. Photosynthesis and cellular respiration are distinct processes; living plant cells can respire in light and darkness under suitable conditions. The tutor should connect carbon dioxide, water, organic molecules, oxygen and usable energy while distinguishing chloroplast and mitochondrial functions.
Ask how a root cell obtains energy when it is not photosynthetic. If the pupil can explain that new context, the lesson has moved beyond a memorised green-leaf drawing.
Practical SVT: experimental competence must be authentic
The 2027 specialty note explicitly integrates évaluation des compétences expérimentales. A tutor can teach how to plan a test, choose controls, read microscope images, analyse graphs and report uncertainty. But actual equipment handling and assessed practical tasks belong under approved school procedures and qualified supervision.
A tutor must not invent observations, write the pupil’s assessed work or promise confidential examination situations. An unexpected result should be described honestly and evaluated, not altered to fit a textbook prediction. Ethical investigation is part of scientific competence.
How to compare providers
One-to-one SVT tuition is useful for a precise misconception or a student who needs time to explain reasoning. A well-matched small group can support debate and document interpretation when learners share the same specialty and examination year. Online tuition can work for diagrams, writing and graph feedback if the student actively participates.
Ask for the tutor’s experience with the 2027 note, current SVT programmes and the actual school level. A general Science tutor may be better for younger pupils with gaps across Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. School support may be enough for a single unclear assignment.
A four-lesson trial
Lesson one records an unassisted scientific explanation, diagram and data answer. Lesson two repairs the earliest missing concept. Lesson three changes the organism or context and practises argumentation. Lesson four uses a new aligned question without hints and compares the reasoning with the baseline.
Parents should ask what the learner can now do independently, not how many pages were completed. A student who can justify a claim with evidence and state one limitation is progressing. No tutor can guarantee a Bac mark or university admission.
Beyond the Bac
SVT can support later study in biology, ecology, agriculture, environmental science, teaching and health-related fields. Actual university, BTS, BUT, CPGE and other routes have distinct admission and programme requirements. Families should check the chosen institution’s current course details and the relevant admissions platform rather than assume the SVT specialty alone guarantees entry.
These French qualifications are not Singapore ITE, JC or polytechnic awards under different names. eduKate’s premium three-student small-group teaching is a Singapore service positioning, not a claim of centres in France.
Questions parents should ask
- Is the pupil in collège, seconde, première or terminale?
- Is the actual specialty SVT or Biologie-écologie?
- Which 2026 or 2027 examination note applies?
- Can the tutor diagnose a real scientific-writing error?
- How are documents, diagrams and experiments taught?
- What practical activities require school supervision?
- What are the fee, session length, group size and cancellation rules?
- What independent improvement should be visible after four lessons?

The decision worth making
Choose the SVT tutor who understands the actual programme, diagnoses the missing connection and teaches the student to organise an evidence-based explanation independently. The 2027 examination changes make precise curriculum alignment particularly important.
