How do you choose a Chemistry tutor in Portugal? Ask first whether the learner is studying Físico-Química in 3.º ciclo (years 7–9), Física e Química A in the 10.º or 11.º ano, or the optional Química subject in the 12.º ano. All involve Chemistry, but the course content, assessment, laboratory expectations and future study decisions are different.
Families searching explicações de química, explicador de Física e Química A, explicações Física e Química 11.º ano, exame nacional 715 2027, química 12.º ano tutor, or explicações online de química in Lisboa, Porto, Coimbra, Braga or Faro should not choose solely on how many exam papers a provider advertises. The tutor should demonstrate an ability to diagnose why one particular student is confused.
The goal is a student who can describe a phenomenon, model it with particles, set up a scientifically correct calculation and judge whether evidence supports a claim. Extra hours have value only when they create that reasoning skill and preserve independence.
Three real Portuguese Chemistry learning routes
Portugal’s compulsory school education is structured across nine years of ensino básico and three years of ensino secundário, with course routes that may be scientific-humanistic, vocational or other recognised programmes. In 3.º ciclo, Physics and Chemistry form a combined subject; in the scientific-humanistic Ciências e Tecnologias route, Física e Química A is studied in the 10.º and 11.º years.
The Direção-Geral da Educação (DGE) Física e Química A directory identifies separate 10.º and 11.º ano Aprendizagens Essenciais. At the next stage, the DGE Química page and the 12.º year Química curriculum describe Chemistry as an optional subject following FQA, not the universal name of every science student’s final examination.
For a 7.º-year student confused about mixtures, a patient general Físico-Química teacher may be better than a university-level organic chemistry specialist. For an 11.º-year student, the ability to interpret both physical and chemical data matters. For a 12.º-year student electing Química, materials, metals and newer chemical technologies take on a distinctive curricular role.
A tutor who proposes one identical chemistry booklet for every year from 7.º through 12.º is not using this structure responsibly. Ask for the school’s actual course title, most recent test, curriculum version and next assessment date.
Portugal updated its 10.º-year FQA essential learning guidance in March 2026
The DGE’s March 2026 10.º-year Física e Química A Aprendizagens Essenciais explains that teaching should connect what students know, how they think and work, and how they show learning. The guidance explicitly keeps practical activities and scientific reasoning alongside essential conceptual knowledge.
That matters to parent decision-making because a strong tutor must not treat the curriculum as a list of definitions. The school expects students to describe and predict phenomena, interpret representations, use scientific information and defend conclusions. Tutors who teach only answer-pattern memorisation can leave crucial learning outcomes untouched.
For 11.º ano, the curriculum page links chemical equilibrium, chemical reactions and practical analysis with Physics topics such as mechanics and electromagnetism. The tutor should know whether the student’s immediate gap concerns the Physics or Chemistry portion.
A family can ask: ‘Which exact Aprendizagens Essenciais will this lesson address, and how will we know our child can perform it?’ The answer should describe a concept, explanation and independent task—not merely ‘we will finish the chapter’.
The national exam is Física e Química A, code 715—not an exam called only Chemistry
For the 2026 sitting, the official IAVE/EduQA 2026 Informação-Prova identifies Física e Química A, Prova 715, 11.º ano. The exam is written, based on the applicable 10.º- and 11.º-year essential learning, and tests concepts, reasoning, representations and practical-experimental understanding.
The 2026 IAVE examination calendar scheduled Prova 715 for 25 June 2026 in the first phase and 24 July 2026 in the second phase. Those are now past dates. They illustrate the course’s exam identity, but should not be copied as if they were already confirmed 2027 sitting dates.
The official IAVE archive of actual 2026 papers and marking criteria is a much better source of legitimate practice than an anonymous social-media pack promising ‘predicted 2027 Chemistry questions’. Students should check the newest approved information-prova when preparing for an upcoming year.
A tutor who knows only the Chemistry portion while advertising complete preparation for Física e Química A should explain clearly what Physics support they can provide, or collaborate with a suitable specialist. The actual examination name matters because it affects study-time allocation.
Química in year 12 has a distinct focus on materials and modern technology
The official 12.º ano Química essential learning organises the subject around metals and alloys, fuels, energy and environment, and plastics, glass and new materials. It explicitly expects students to connect chemical understanding with sustainable use of materials and practical laboratory reasoning.
That is a different teaching purpose from simply replaying every FQA Prova 715 example. A 12.º-year Química tutor should be comfortable explaining why metal structure affects properties, how catalysts and chemical processes are discussed, and what the learner must do with genuine experimental data.
One interesting advanced question asks why strong and weak acids differ from concentrated and dilute solutions. Acid strength concerns ionisation behaviour; concentration expresses the quantity in a given amount of solution. A tutor who treats those words as synonyms can create errors that continue into university work.
The DGE curriculum also mentions titration and buffer systems in the appropriate 12.º-year science context. Tutors may use hypothetical curves and supplied data to teach those ideas but must never fabricate experimental measurements or encourage unsupervised strong-acid reactions at home.
A fifteen-minute Físico-Química diagnostic with three levels
Stage one: particles. Give the student a drawing of salt dissolved in water and another of sand suspended in water. Ask what differs and what observations can reveal. The purpose is to distinguish visible appearance from the molecular interpretation.
Stage two: conservation. Write 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O. Ask the learner to explain why there are four hydrogen and two oxygen atoms on either side, and why a coefficient may be adjusted but a chemical formula cannot be casually changed to obtain the answer.
Stage three: amount of substance. If 4.0 mol of hydrogen reacts with sufficient oxygen, the balanced equation predicts 4.0 mol water and consumes 2.0 mol oxygen. A useful teacher asks the student to explain the coefficients rather than provide a shortcut.
Now offer a solution question: 15 g of dissolved solute are mixed with 285 g of water. The solution mass is 300 g, and the solute is 5.0% by mass. A child who divides by 285 may be choosing the wrong scientific denominator even while doing the arithmetic correctly.
For a year 11 candidate, ask one more question: a concentration is described as 0.020 mol/L, while another equivalent value is expressed as 20 mmol/L. Are they equal? Yes. The explanation should include units, quantities and dimensional meaning.
The tutor’s report should distinguish problems with scientific concepts, numerical foundations and written answer interpretation. That is the difference between useful explicações and simply delivering another set of worksheets.
A worked example that connects FQA Chemistry with the science of water
Imagine a laboratory worksheet giving 25.0 mL of a 0.100 mol/L solution of a monoprotic strong acid. The amount of acid is n = cV = 0.100 × 0.0250 = 0.00250 mol. The tutor should ask the student to explain why 25.0 mL had to be converted to 0.0250 L.
Suppose it reacts with a suitable monobasic strong base under a 1:1 neutralisation relationship. At 0.0500 mol/L base concentration, the calculated equivalence volume is 0.0500 L = 50.0 mL. What made the calculation possible? The reaction’s mole ratio, the concentration definitions and the stated ideal conditions.
Change the question so the ratio becomes 1:2. Can the learner still identify the correct amount? Someone who memorised only cross-multiplication may not. Someone who understands stoichiometry can reason from the balanced equation.
To extend the example, ask what an experimental titre would look like if there were measurement uncertainty or a different endpoint. The student should distinguish a theoretical calculation from an observed reading and describe why the two need not be identical.
This example is written teaching material. Titration using hazardous reagents should take place only in properly supervised school laboratories, with authorised procedures and safety controls.
A tutor who respects Portuguese scientific vocabulary is easier to learn from
The student may know terms such as substância, mistura, soluto, solvente, ligação química, equilíbrio, reagente and produto without understanding their distinctions. A strong tutor asks for a drawing or new example rather than rewarding exact recitation.
For international-school learners, English- or French-language resources can supplement the real curriculum, but a foreign syllabus cannot silently replace the assessment demands of Portuguese FQA or 12.º-year Química.
An effective teacher can explain the same concept in plain Portuguese, a labelled diagram, symbolic notation and a short numerical problem. The student should then be able to move between those representations independently.
Which kind of difficulty are you actually paying a tutor to solve?
- Concept gap: confusing mixtures and compounds, strong and concentrated acids or atoms and ions. Start from the correct mental model.
- Representation gap: the learner understands a story but not a structural diagram, graph or chemical equation. Connect the representations deliberately.
- Mathematics gap: unit conversions, significant figures, ratios, logarithms or percentages are unreliable. Repair the numerical prerequisite within scientific examples.
- FQA balance problem: the student devotes all revision to Chemistry while ignoring the Physics portion of Prova 715. Adjust the plan to the actual subject.
- Experimental-evidence problem: learners cannot explain error, precision, control variables or a justified conclusion. Practise critical data interpretation.
- Transfer problem: known IAVE items work, but a new real-world case does not. Require independent, unfamiliar practice after the explanation.
A parent should expect a short written baseline. ‘Your child fails whenever they must connect an equilibrium claim to the data table’ is useful. ‘Needs 20 hours of Chemistry’ is a timetable, not a diagnosis.
Portugal offers its own distinctive Chemistry examples
Coastal waters, drinking-water treatment, marine corrosion, ceramic and glass manufacturing, agriculture, food fermentation, renewable-energy materials and pharmaceutical science offer excellent contexts for teaching Chemistry. The tutor should select an example that illuminates the exact school topic rather than making broad national-industry claims.
For a Físico-Química student, seawater can show the difference between suspended particles and dissolved ions. In an advanced class, it provides an opportunity to discuss salinity, separation, material selection and why laboratory measurements require calibration and correct units.
Ceramics and glass provide a 12.º-year materials question: how do composition, thermal processing and structure influence properties? It is a chance to compare different material classes without suggesting children manufacture glass or handle industrial kilns.
Food fermentation and acidity support a careful discussion of chemical changes, microorganisms and measurements. A young learner may explore the difference between observation and explanation; a senior student can use a provided data table to interpret pH, a titration curve or a measured concentration.
Corrosion on coastal structures provides another safe school example of oxidation, material protection and environmental conditions. The student should learn to propose a controlled comparison rather than claim the condition of a particular bridge from a photograph.
All work involving concentrated acids, fuels, industrial reagents and heated equipment needs proper laboratory supervision. A tuition session can use models and sample datasets without risking safety.
Private explicações, a small study group or online tutoring?
Individual lessons help when a specific Chemistry or Mathematics misconception blocks progress. A carefully matched small group can improve confidence and oral explanations. Online tutoring may be convenient when travel across a metropolitan area or access to a specialist makes attendance difficult.
The selection test is not just the number of people in the room. Do students explain a prediction, solve their own question, receive correction and tackle an unfamiliar problem? A lesson where a teacher completes every calculation may look efficient but cannot demonstrate independent understanding.
A student preparing for Prova 715 may benefit from timed IAVE practice once the relevant concepts are secure. But paper drilling should be adapted to the full FQA content and never become a substitute for understanding scientific models.
eduKate Singapore’s Clementi three-learner teaching reference shows one model for accurate error diagnosis in a small group. It is an educational comparison, not a claim that eduKate runs a physical Chemistry centre in Portugal.
A parent’s seven-minute screening conversation
- Which course does the student actually take: 3.º ciclo Físico-Química, 10.º/11.º FQA or optional 12.º-year Química?
- Which DGE Aprendizagens Essenciais, school unit and edition are you using?
- If preparing for Prova 715, will the tutoring cover the full Physics and Chemistry requirements, and are you using the correct future exam information?
- Can you explain why a calculation works with a particle model and proper units before showing an exam answer?
- How will you distinguish Mathematics weakness, scientific vocabulary and laboratory-data interpretation?
- Do you protect the student’s own school work and lab data from ghostwriting or fabrication?
- What are the prices, cancellation terms, safeguarding and evidence of progress after a four-week trial?
A four-week trial built around measurable science learning
- Week 1: identify exact course and school material, one concept, one numerical question and one data task that the learner cannot yet complete confidently.
- Week 2: rebuild the weakest bridge between observation, particle model, equation and quantity. Leave one short independent exercise.
- Week 3: transfer the idea into a different example using units and scientific reasoning, then practise relevant IAVE-style questions where applicable.
- Week 4: retest unfamiliar problems with fewer hints. Review whether the learner explains the result correctly and what support, if any, should continue.
The useful parent report is ‘now calculates a dilution independently and distinguishes experimental evidence from prediction’, not ‘covered five chapters’. A good tutor can also recommend fewer lessons when the student no longer needs them.
Higher education requires a programme-specific admission decision
Portugal’s DGES 2026 entrance-exam deliberations explain the correspondence between national examinations and provas de ingresso for individual higher education programmes. A student interested in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, pharmacy-related fields or environmental science should check which examinations are accepted or required by the exact course and institution.
The Portuguese government’s higher education application service describes the main entry conditions: completion of secondary school, appropriate examination results within the allowed validity period, any required prerequisites and suitable grades. A Chemistry tutor cannot guarantee admission by predicting a mark.
Routes also include Licenciatura programmes and Cursos Técnicos Superiores Profissionais (CTeSP). DGES’s 16 February 2026 higher education notice specifically records growth in places for CTeSP qualification holders, a reminder that applied education creates genuine possibilities.
A learner preparing for materials science, pharmaceuticals, renewable-energy technology or a laboratory career may need Chemistry alongside Mathematics, Physics, languages and practical skills. The receiving institution determines the combination, not a tuition advert.
Singapore’s ITE, polytechnic, JC, PSLE and SEC structures can be used for international comparison, but they are not Portuguese schooling or degree labels.
Frequently asked questions
Does every Portuguese Year 12 student take a 12.º-year Química national exam? No. The optional subject Química at year 12 is distinct from the national 11.º-year FQA examination Prova 715.
Can a Chemistry-only tutor prepare the whole 715 paper? Only if they also possess competence in and actually teach the relevant Physics content. Ask directly about the full scope.
Is the 2026 715 examination date also the 2027 date? No such assumption should be made. The 2026 dates are historical reference points; check the current official calendar for 2027.
Can an online tutor working abroad help? Yes, if they teach from the correct DGE essential-learning documents, use Portuguese assessment terminology and provide active feedback on the student’s written reasoning.
Would a 7.º-year learner benefit more from Mathematics support? Sometimes. If fractions, units and reading are the real barriers, a well-planned foundation may help Físico-Química more than advanced Chemistry lectures.
