How to decide which English Tutor to go to? | Germany

Three secondary students review open books and notes together in a classroom.

How do you decide which English tutor to go to in Germany? The first question is where the pupil goes to school. Germany has sixteen Länder (federal states), each responsible for much of its education system. English classes, school forms, assessment schedules and routes to the Abitur are not identical everywhere. A parent comparing Englisch Nachhilfe in Berlin and Munich should look beyond an advertisement for “all school levels”. The right tutor needs the current state’s curriculum, the pupil’s year and an independent sample of the work they struggle with.

Searches for Englisch Nachhilfe, Englisch Privatunterricht, Englisch Abitur Vorbereitung, English tutor Germany, online English lessons or Business Englisch describe several different educational jobs. A primary learner may need to connect a spoken word to print. A student preparing for a Mittlerer Schulabschluss may need better reading and writing. A Gymnasium pupil aiming for the Abitur may need to analyse argument and media, while an Ausbildung trainee may need precise English for a workplace procedure. Begin with the skill that is missing, not a predetermined number of tuition hours.

Sixteen Länder: there is no single universal Germany English paper

The Standing Conference of Ministers of Education (KMK) explains that the federal states design their school systems independently while coordinating standards and recognition. Germany’s English learning expectations share broad principles, but exact teaching sequences and examinations depend on the state, school type, subject course and cohort. Ask your school which state curriculum and assessment rules apply before hiring an exam-focused tutor. A past paper from Bavaria is not automatically the correct template for a candidate in Hamburg.

The KMK educational standards page includes revised standards for the first foreign language (English or French) at the Erster Schulabschluss and Mittlerer Schulabschluss levels, adopted in 2023. Those national coordination documents are useful for understanding broad competency expectations, but a tutor should still verify the state’s own detailed exam rules. The safest first appointment uses current schoolwork, a school-issued information sheet and one unseen task.

Grundschule: even the primary-school duration differs across the country

In much of Germany, primary school (Grundschule) covers Grades 1–4. Berlin and Brandenburg have different arrangements, generally extending primary to Grade 6. This has consequences for school transitions and age-based tuition advertising. A pupil in Berlin’s Grade 5 is not necessarily at the same school stage as a Grade 5 pupil in another Land, although their English language needs can overlap. Ask what the classroom has already covered rather than assuming the same national grade-to-book mapping everywhere.

Early English may emphasise listening, familiar vocabulary and brief spoken responses before increasingly demanding written work. A child who can say “train”, “bridge” and “ticket” may still not understand “The train arrived after the bridge reopened”. Ask the teacher to make the timeline visible, explain “after” and then present another event sequence. When the pupil can interpret a fresh sentence without copying, teaching has created a transferable skill.

A second child may understand the spoken sentence but be unable to read the words independently. This is a sound–print connection problem rather than a lack of understanding of trains. A third child reads fluently yet cannot explain the event. The tutor should distinguish those cases and avoid one-size-fits-all vocabulary drills. The best intervention may be a very small number of targeted lessons combined with normal classroom support and regular home reading.

School support comes first: distinguish tutoring from available learning assistance

A pupil who repeatedly struggles should discuss the difficulty with the classroom teacher. The school’s normal support, differentiated learning and feedback may solve the issue without an extra commercial arrangement. Ask whether the problem is vocabulary in context, misunderstanding task verbs, planning written answers, or an underlying learning difficulty that needs a school-led assessment. An English tutor can complement teaching; it should not claim to diagnose medical or developmental conditions from one lesson.

Try keeping two copies of a task: the original independent attempt and a later independent response to a similar, new prompt. If the second answer is stronger and the learner can explain why, the intervention is useful. If the tutor’s red pen fixes everything but the child cannot answer alone, the family may be paying for completed homework rather than learning.

Sekundarstufe I: identify the school form and leaving qualification

Germany has multiple lower-secondary routes with state-specific school types and school-leaving qualifications. Names such as Gymnasium, Realschule, Gesamtschule and other integrated or vocationally oriented forms do not produce a single nationwide assessment timetable. The KMK’s 2024/25 system dossier explains the organisation of general and vocational pathways. A tutor preparing a student for an English component at the Erster or Mittlerer Schulabschluss should ask for the actual Land and exam year before choosing materials.

A student may lose reading-comprehension marks by choosing an answer containing a familiar word without checking its meaning. Use an original example: “Although the town restricted car traffic, local shops reported more weekend visitors.” A learner concludes that shop visits decreased. The tutor should show how “although” introduces an expectation but the rest of the sentence states the actual result. Then use another paragraph on school sports and ask the learner to explain the same relationship without a model.

Another student may read well but write disconnected arguments. Ask for a short response on whether a town should introduce more cycle routes. Does it have a clear position, reasons, evidence and an appropriate conclusion? The tutor should identify the first weakness and let the student repair a different paragraph. Copying a polished essay is not adequate preparation for an unseen school task.

How the CEFR is useful—and how it is misused in advertising

Some German language schools and tutors advertise English programmes using CEFR labels such as A2, B1 or B2. These labels describe language capabilities, not a universal substitute for the pupil’s school leaving certificate. A learner may understand advanced written English but have hesitant unrehearsed speaking. Another may chat comfortably yet find academic writing difficult. Ask the provider to assess reading, listening, writing and speaking separately rather than infer all four from a multiple-choice grammar test.

For a pupil aiming to improve classroom performance, a CEFR-focused conversation course can be useful supplementary practice but should not replace school-aligned reading or writing work. For an adult with a workplace goal, the opposite may apply: a school textbook with excellent grammar exercises might be less useful than authentic telephone, email and meeting tasks. The objective determines the method.

Gymnasiale Oberstufe and Abitur: determine the state’s examination combination

The KMK Abitur overview describes an introductory phase, a two-year qualification phase, four or five examination subjects and requirements spanning key subject areas, with detailed design left to the states. It also explains that examination subjects must include at least two of German, a foreign language and Mathematics. That does not mean every student everywhere must sit a separate written Abitur English examination. Before buying “Abi Englisch” preparation, identify whether English is a basic or advanced course, an examination subject and whether it is assessed in writing or orally for this student.

If English is an examination subject, ask which task types and marking rules the current Land uses. The KMK advanced English standards offer common competencies, but the state’s exam authority controls the current paper and permitted materials. A tutor should work backwards from those requirements and the student’s present performance. Generic predictions about a particular “Abitur topic for Germany” are poor evidence of preparation.

Abitur English often tests how a student reasons with a text

A learner can translate a news article and still misinterpret its claim or ignore its qualifications. A good tutor teaches the difference between summary, analysis, commentary and evaluation, with the exact task verbs checked against the state’s guidance. For example, the writer may acknowledge that renewable energy infrastructure is expensive before arguing that long-term benefits justify investment. A student who writes “the author opposes renewable energy” has mistaken a concession for the thesis. The teacher should locate textual support and require a new interpretation of a different article.

Advanced English work may involve literary texts, non-fiction, speeches, cartoons, media, cultural contexts and communication appropriate to a given course. A tutor should know which are relevant for the student’s programme without guaranteeing a future paper topic. Good feedback explains what an answer must accomplish and why the existing analysis falls short; it does not replace the student’s writing with an essay to memorise.

Vocational Germany: Ausbildung and Berufsschule create different English needs

Germany’s dual vocational training combines workplace and vocational-school learning for many occupations, with other full-time vocational and professional routes. A future hotel worker may need English for guest communication; a logistics trainee might need to read shipping documentation; a technician might need manuals or safety instructions. The KMK education system dossier distinguishes general and vocational educational structures. Do not assume a Singapore ITE or polytechnic syllabus is a German vocational training curriculum simply because their career aims overlap.

An English tutor working with an apprentice should ask for a representative workplace-language task, not confidential company data. For example, a notice says: “The machine may be restarted only after the safety check is complete.” If the learner paraphrases it as “Restart the machine now”, the condition has disappeared. A responsible language teacher teaches “may”, “only after” and the sequence of events, then tests a different instruction. Actual equipment operation remains with qualified workplace trainers.

Technical, university and academic English are not identical courses

An applicant to a German university, university of applied sciences or English-taught international degree should read that programme’s admission page. Some programmes are taught in German and require evidence of German proficiency; some courses are in English and may require an accepted English test or proof from previous studies. An English tutor should not tell every university applicant that IELTS or TOEFL is mandatory. The receiving university decides the accepted qualification, minimum result, validity and any exemptions.

University English may require summarising research papers, interpreting technical graphs, producing source-based arguments and collaborating on projects. A school-level exam tutor may be effective at academic foundations but not necessarily experienced in postgraduate writing. Ask for an unfamiliar short abstract as a trial. Can the teacher show how to distinguish a research question, method, result and limitation without pretending that a literature-based essay format answers everything?

Business English: judge the quality of the message, not its impressive vocabulary

An adult might need to lead a meeting, clarify a contract condition, explain a product issue or deal politely with a delayed shipment. A teacher who promises “native-level accent in ten lessons” may be targeting the wrong outcome. Try a role-play that forces the learner to clarify a misunderstanding. Can they state what is known, unknown and conditional? Can they preserve an exact quantity and deadline? Are they able to change register depending on whether the listener is a customer or colleague? These tasks distinguish useful professional teaching from generic conversation drills.

For example, a delivery note says that a product is “expected Tuesday subject to customs clearance.” A learner reports “Delivery is guaranteed Tuesday.” The error changes a conditional forecast into a firm promise. A tutor should correct the meaning, model a responsible message and present a different condition next session. Independent accuracy on that new message matters more than using sophisticated words in a rehearsed script.

One-to-one tuition, Lernstudio, group course or online tutor?

Private English lessons give space for precise writing feedback and a learner who is hesitant to speak. A small group may be useful for authentic exchange and peer explanation when levels match. A Nachhilfeinstitut can supply structure and regular practice, but ask how much individual feedback and independent speaking the learner receives. Online English tutors widen the available teacher pool, but reliable audio, shared documents, marking and a fair cancellation policy matter more than fancy software.

Fees should be compared on a total-value basis: the number of sessions, length, group size, materials, homework marking, contractual commitments and refund terms. Do not claim a single national “normal tutoring price” without local market evidence. For minors, ask about safeguarding, private messaging, recordings and parent access. A well-known brand is not proof that the assigned teacher knows the student’s particular state examination.

A practical 25-minute tutor trial

  • Ask for the Land, school form, grade and—where relevant—the exact Erster Schulabschluss, Mittlerer Schulabschluss or Abitur assessment.
  • Bring the learner’s current school text and one short independent writing piece, rather than a homework page already corrected by a parent.
  • Ask the tutor to identify the first important misunderstanding and explain it without doing every step for the learner.
  • Present another passage or prompt and check whether the student can transfer the corrected idea independently.
  • For vocational or adult goals, practise one authentic message with accurate quantities, conditions and register.
  • Agree on a manageable workload, feedback, fees and an independent progress check after four to six weeks.

When no paid English tuition is needed

A student who is progressing with school learning, feedback and regular reading may not benefit from another scheduled class. Try a short home routine: read a new paragraph, explain its point, write a short response and revisit the same skill several days later using a different text. If independence improves, do not automatically add more tuition. If one persistent problem remains, ask the classroom teacher for support and consider focused outside help only where useful.
