How to decide which English Tutor to go to? | Zichang

Three students reviewing open textbooks, notes and stationery together at a classroom table.

In Zichang, the most useful English tutor should teach a student to distinguish what a historical source states from what a reader infers. A memorised story is not proof that the student can interpret a new passage accurately.

This guide concerns Zichang (子长市), Yan’an, Shaanxi, and searches including 子长市英语老师怎么选, 子长市英语辅导 and 子长市中考英语. eduKate is a Singapore education publisher and tuition provider, not an in-person tutor in Zichang.

Decide whether tuition is necessary

Bring an independently completed school reading answer, a short paragraph and a listening attempt. A missed word, unheard clause, inaccurate inference or weak response organisation can cause similar marks. A teacher should identify one underlying weakness before proposing a programme. School and home reading may already be enough.

Why Zichang offers meaningful English material

Zichang is a county-level city administered by Yan’an, with historical and cultural connections to northern Shaanxi. Source-based reading provides a useful context, but a language teacher should not invent historical claims or replace the school syllabus with heritage facts.

Original worked diagnostic

Invented classroom passage: “The museum guide quotes a later account of the event, but the original record does not confirm every detail in that version.”

  • Is the quoted account necessarily an original record?
  • Does the text say every detail is confirmed?
  • What is the difference between quoting and confirming?
  • Write a careful summary that attributes the later account.

Supported answer: The guide cites a later account, while the original record does not confirm every detail. A careful summary identifies the source and acknowledges the limits of evidence.

Repair the actual problem

If a student treats a quotation as proof, teach source attribution and the limits of evidence. If they understand but write an overconfident summary, practise ‘reports’, ‘suggests’ and ‘confirms’. If the audio fails but print succeeds, work on the spoken qualifying clause.

Read the passage aloud before showing it. Record the learner’s first independent answer and ask for the exact words supporting it. Explain one missing principle in plain language, guide one example and then remove hints. A copied model answer is not evidence of independent understanding.

Transfer the learning to a new setting

Unfamiliar second passage: “The science club proposed an explanation of its result, but the experiment has not established that explanation conclusively.”

Ask for a fresh answer without the first model. Retest after several days to check retention and independent reasoning.

The 2026 examination and admissions context

Zichang is administered within Yan’an, not Yulin. The Shaanxi education authority is the provincial policy starting point. The actual 2026 and later junior-secondary English assessment, registration, listening/oral components and high-school admissions must be verified with Yan’an’s competent education bureau and the candidate’s school. Do not import another city’s score split.

Mainland China has compulsory primary and junior-secondary education, general and vocational senior-secondary routes, gaokao, university and work. Zhongkao is different from gaokao. Confirm the actual written, listening and any oral foreign-language requirements for the school and cohort. A tutor cannot guarantee admission or a particular score.

Choose support by education stage

Primary pupils can learn ‘someone said’ versus ‘I saw’. Junior-secondary students need inference, listening and concise answers. General senior-secondary learners need gaokao reading and argumentation. Vocational learners may need precise service updates; university learners need source evaluation and citations.

  • Primary: reading enjoyment, phonics where needed, stories and retelling.
  • Junior secondary: listening, inference, grammar in context and writing aligned to the current cohort.
  • General senior secondary: sustained reading and writing for the applicable gaokao programme.
  • Vocational secondary: practical instructions and customer communication.
  • University: research reading, evidence, citations and presentations.
  • Work: anonymised real messages, accurate qualifiers and professional tone.

Singapore’s Primary/PSLE, Secondary, ITE, polytechnic, junior college and university routes are overseas comparisons or possible destinations only, not mainland Chinese school stages.

A four-week evidence plan

  • Week 1: collect independent listening, reading and writing; identify one unstable skill.
  • Week 2: rebuild the missing principle from first principles and practise with feedback.
  • Week 3: change the topic, interleave earlier skills and remove prompts.
  • Week 4: check delayed independent transfer and decide whether further lawful support is necessary.

Realistic trade-offs

Knowledge of local history does not make a tutor effective. Ask for a changed-topic test using the science-club example, then a delayed independent response. Compare lawful school feedback, small groups and individual support on quality, travel and cost.

A lawful small group can offer peer explanations when every learner receives specific feedback. Individual instruction may target a persistent difficulty but can cost more. Compare school support, travel, fatigue, timetables and total fees.

Questions before paying

  • Which exact error did you find in the learner’s independent work?
  • How will you distinguish listening, inference and writing organisation?
  • Can you teach one principle and test an unfamiliar passage without hints?
  • Which current school-year and local examination notice applies?
  • What independent improvement should be visible after two to four weeks?
  • Can we verify licence, authorised age and subject, permitted teaching mode and hours, and tutor qualifications?
  • Can we inspect the fees, written contract, payment protections and refunds?

Double Reduction: check legal permission

China’s Ministry of Education academic-subject classification includes compulsory-school English. The 2021 Double Reduction framework restricts off-campus academic tutoring, including prohibited rest-day, holiday and vacation classes. Home, individual, online, overseas and ‘conversation club’ labels are not automatic exemptions. Check the local public provider directory and the national supervision platform for actual licence, age and subject scope, permitted hours and mode, qualifications, fees, contract and refunds. Do not enrol in prohibited or unlicensed tutoring.
