How to choose a Mathematics tutor in Cuba
A family in Havana, Santiago de Cuba, Camagüey, Holguín or Santa Clara might search profesor particular de Matemática Cuba, repaso secundaria básica, Matemática duodécimo grado or preparación ingreso universidad. These are different needs. A primary pupil may require number sense and fractions; a secondary-school learner may be finding algebra confusing; a preuniversitario student may want to strengthen functions and mathematical reasoning for further study.
Before paying for a course, ask a tutor to inspect the child’s actual class, textbook and written work. This is especially important in 2026 because announced university entrance examinations were later suspended for that admission cycle. Families should not pay for a timetable that became obsolete.
A major 2026 update: the announced university Mathematics entrance exam did not proceed
On March 25, 2026, Granma reported plans for university entrance examinations for the 2026–2027 intake, including Mathematics on June 5, Spanish on June 9 and Cuban History on June 12. Those dates came from the originally announced plan.
The later May 30, 2026, Granma education report explained that the higher-education entrance examinations would not be held that cycle, with officials referring to energy, transportation and material constraints. The revised exceptional university placement process used accumulated academic results from preuniversity education rather than that set of entrance papers.
A Mathematics tutor should know that chronology. Selling a June 5 exam-preparation package as though it were still due would be misleading. The decision did not mean that Mathematics ceased to matter: students still needed secure classroom knowledge and appropriate preparation for the next learning stage. A future admission cycle must be checked independently; the 2026 suspension was described as an exceptional measure.
Ninth grade, preuniversitario and university applications are different
A pupil in primaria, another in secundaria básica and a twelfth-grade preuniversitario learner follow different mathematical courses. The 2026 government announcements also distinguished ninth-year students seeking places at certain science-oriented preuniversity schools from twelfth-year students seeking further-education placements.
The May 30 report said ninth-year applicants to the Institutos Preuniversitarios Vocacionales de Ciencias Exactas were not required to sit the usual entrance exams that year. A tutor should therefore separate the student’s actual school learning from a test that was suspended, and from any specialised subject requirements that may apply later.
For a student considering technical training, science, healthcare, arts or university programmes, ask what Mathematics that particular pathway requires. It is not appropriate to assume that all school leavers need an identical calculus course, or that future admission rules can be predicted from one extraordinary year.
Why diagnostic teaching matters after an interrupted course
The 2025–2026 school calendar and assessment processes involved exceptional adjustments, with educational authorities discussing academic continuity and a period of levelling at the start of the next school year. A teacher should not automatically interpret a missed chapter or unfamiliar examination arrangement as proof that a child cannot learn Mathematics.
Start with a short diagnostic sample from place value, fractions, word problems, geometry and age-appropriate algebra. The pupil may have strong computation but weak comprehension of a diagram, or a reliable formula but difficulty translating technical language into a relationship.
Select the smallest meaningful repair that allows the student to resume the current course. A massive restart from elementary arithmetic can waste time if the real missing idea is the meaning of brackets. Equally, more advanced drill papers will not solve an unresolved misunderstanding of fractions.
A fictional exercise about changing and fixed quantities
Imagine six identical notebooks costing 240 invented classroom units. One notebook costs 40 units; nine cost 360 units. A fixed one-time transport fee of 50 units makes the nine-book total 410 units. These are fictional teaching numbers, not current Cuban shop prices or a statement about an actual currency.
A student might divide 240 by six correctly yet multiply the transport fee by nine. That indicates a misunderstanding of the distinction between a variable amount and a fixed charge. Use a table separating the two components, then write 40n + 50 as the total for n books.
Change the question to four books. The answer is 210 classroom units. If the student can explain why the fee stays at 50 and solve the new task without hints, they understand a relationship that will later help with algebra and functions.
Fractions connect primary school to equations
Ask for three quarters of 32. Divide a bar into four equal groups of eight, then take three groups to get 24. Reverse the question: if three quarters of an unknown amount are 24, the original is 32. Only then present the equivalent equation (3/4)x = 24.
Now modify it to (3/4)(x − 6) = 24. The quantity inside brackets must equal 32, so x = 38. A child who answers 32 may understand the fraction but fail to notice what the bracket groups together.
The tutor should reconstruct the idea through a drawing and a clear explanation, then set a changed task with new numbers. Repetition becomes useful after understanding, not instead of it.
Decimal place value is more important than many shortcuts
Which is larger, 0.6 or 0.58? Six tenths equals sixty hundredths and is therefore greater than fifty-eight hundredths. The numeral with more decimal places is not automatically the larger value.
A tutor can show both numbers on a number line or shade a hundred-square to make the comparison visible. Then change the pair to 0.45 and 0.5 and ask the pupil to explain why the second is larger.
This understanding returns in percentages, measurement, financial arithmetic and probability. A student who can interpret decimals as quantities is better prepared for unfamiliar questions than one who only memorises a rule about adding trailing zeroes.
Secundaria básica algebra: what brackets actually mean
Compare 3(x + 5) = 30 with 3x + 5 = 30. The first gives x = 5 and the second x = 25/3. Both equations include three, five and x, but the first represents three copies of a complete group. The second represents three copies of x with five added once.
Ask the student to draw the two relationships and verify the answers by substitution. Once they can explain why the equations are different, set another example without telling them which operation comes first.
An effective tutor helps pupils understand expressions rather than simply using the instruction “move this number across”. That meaning is necessary for factorisation, functions, geometry formulae and more advanced modelling.
Geometry: drawing a border before calculating
Imagine a fictional rectangular courtyard 12 metres by 8 metres. Its total area is 96 square metres. A one-metre strip along the inside perimeter leaves a rectangle 10 by 6 metres, with an area of 60 square metres. The strip occupies 36 square metres.
If the border is only half a metre wide, the inner rectangle is 11 by 7 metres, with an area of 77, so the strip occupies 19 square metres. A child who removes the width from only one end has misunderstood the geometry.
The tutor should ask for a diagram, correct dimensions and square-metre units before accepting a formula. This is an invented exercise, not a construction recommendation.
Senior Mathematics: graphs and equations must connect
For a learner whose actual school course includes quadratic functions, use f(x) = x² − 8x + 12. It factors into (x − 2)(x − 6), with roots 2 and 6. Completing the square gives (x − 4)² − 4, so the minimum lies at (4, −4).
Ask what happens when four is added to the function. The result becomes (x − 4)² and touches the horizontal axis at x = 4. A student who can predict this graph change knows more than the isolated algebraic procedure.
This is an original teaching example, not a problem claimed to have appeared on a 2026 Cuban university entrance examination. Match advanced tutoring to the school course and a genuine educational destination.
Statistical reasoning, percentages and technical Spanish
Consider five fictional measurements: 10, 12, 12, 16 and 20. Their mean is 14 and median 12. Change 20 to 50; the mean becomes 20 while the median stays at 12. Ask why an extreme observation changes some summaries more than others. These are teaching numbers, not real Cuban educational statistics.
Percentages also require an identified base. A fictional budget of 10,000 units reduced by 15% becomes 8,500. An increase of 15% on that new amount makes 9,775, not the original 10,000. The reference quantity changed, so the operations do not cancel.
Words matter too. Al menos ocho means n ≥ 8 while como máximo ocho means n ≤ 8. A learner can calculate accurately after setting up the wrong relationship. A good tutor uses words, number lines and equations together.
A four-lesson plan for measurable improvement
In the first lesson, the tutor reviews the child’s textbook, one correct answer and two mistakes. In the second, they repair the earliest missing prerequisite through a model and independent practice. In the third, they reconnect the skill to current schoolwork. In the fourth, a new question tests whether the learner can select a method independently.
A written update should distinguish repair of missing knowledge, maintenance of current-school progress and extension to deeper reasoning. Those are temporary teaching objectives, not labels of children’s ability. If the original difficulty is resolved, lighter practice may be more sensible than indefinite tuition.
Individual lessons, small groups and remote sessions can all help if the teacher actually sees and corrects the pupil’s working, adapts practice to the relevant course and gradually reduces prompting.
Seven questions for a Mathematics tutor in Cuba
- Which school level, course and textbook are you preparing this student for?
- Have you checked the final May 2026 decision on university admission instead of relying on the obsolete March timetable?
- Can you identify the first incorrect mathematical relationship in two genuine answers?
- How do you explain a concept using drawings, language and equations?
- What unfamiliar problem should the pupil solve independently after two to four sessions?
- If the student plans further study, which specific subject requirements have been verified?
- Will you recommend less support when the learning goal has been achieved?
A dependable tutor explains facts and mathematical reasoning clearly; they do not guarantee scores in examinations that are not taking place.
