If a PSLE result slip shows “Ungraded”, an approved Mother Tongue exemption, or a subject that does not appear on the examination certificate, parents should not automatically interpret the missing grade as AL8 or zero. These labels describe different reporting situations. Higher Mother Tongue may be reported as Distinction, Merit, Pass or Ungraded, and it does not form part of the ordinary four-subject PSLE Score. An approved Mother Tongue exemption has its own official method for deriving the school-posting aggregate. SEAB also states that ungraded subjects are not printed on the examination certificate, even where they may be mentioned on the separate result slip.
The correct action is to read the result slip and the accompanying explanatory notes together, rather than relying only on a photograph of the certificate. SEAB issues the result slip and certificate through the primary school when results are released. Check which subjects are reported at Standard or Foundation level, whether an exempt or ungraded entry appears, and whether the official overall PSLE Score and Posting Group are shown. If a core examined subject has no grade or the score appears unusual, contact the primary school promptly for an individual explanation; do not fabricate a fourth AL or submit secondary-school choices based on an unofficial calculation.
- Result slip: the detailed official document received with the examination certificate.
- Certificate: shows the awarded grades; SEAB says ungraded subjects are omitted.
- Higher Mother Tongue Ungraded: is not an extra numeric AL in the four-subject total.
- Standard AL8: an actual awarded achievement band, not automatically synonymous with “Ungraded”.
- Foundation C: an awarded Foundation grade, equivalent to AL8 for the overall score; not identical to “Ungraded”.
- MTL Exempted: an authorised exemption/in-lieu status with its own scoring treatment.
- Next step: use the official score, certificate notes and school clarification, especially when a main subject grade is missing.
Definition lock: the result slip and examination certificate serve different purposes
A PSLE result slip contains the reported examination outcomes and accompanying result information issued to the pupil. The examination certificate is a controlled official record of subjects for which grades were awarded. SEAB’s April 2026 guidance makes clear that pupils receive the slip with their certificate at the school when results are released, and that ungraded subjects are not reflected on the certificate.
A child’s four-subject overall PSLE Score is a sum of Achievement Levels for English, Mathematics, Science and Mother Tongue under the applicable scoring system. Some approved Foundation and exemption arrangements use prescribed equivalents. The existence of a certificate alone does not authorise a parent to compute the aggregate differently from the one printed by the examining authorities.
Keep the two documents together and review the official explanatory notes rather than circulating isolated screenshots. A certificate is not a public invitation to infer what happened in an ungraded subject or discuss an individual pupil’s circumstances.
| Document or notation | What it reports | What parents should NOT assume |
|---|---|---|
| Result slip | Official results and relevant annotations | Every entry will appear in the same form on the certificate |
| Examination certificate | Grades awarded in eligible subjects | An omitted subject always received AL8 |
| Standard AL8 | A valid awarded Standard achievement band | A synonym for Ungraded |
| Foundation C | A valid awarded Foundation result | A missing subject or a zero |
| Higher Mother Tongue Ungraded | No award of Distinction, Merit or Pass in that higher subject | The PSLE aggregate automatically increases by eight |
| MTL Exempted | Approved absence of a PSLE MTL examination under relevant arrangements | An undocumented voluntary withdrawal |
What does “Ungraded” mean in a Higher Mother Tongue result?
The 2026 SEAB subject reporting scheme grades Higher Chinese, Higher Malay and Higher Tamil with the words Distinction, Merit, Pass or Ungraded. These are not AL1, AL2, AL3 and AL4 respectively, and they are not numeric values to add to the PSLE Score. Higher Mother Tongue is reported separately because the normal four-subject total already includes the appropriate Mother Tongue component.
If Higher Chinese is shown as Ungraded, the family should not interpret that as “add eight to the PSLE total”. The total remains based on English, Mathematics, Science and the regular Mother Tongue subject or its official equivalent. If the family is considering a SAP school or Higher Mother Tongue in Secondary 1, it should check the separate eligibility conditions and any applicable Higher Chinese priority rather than trying to change the aggregate.
The presence of an Ungraded higher subject does not allow anyone to infer the child’s actual component raw mark or the circumstances behind the outcome. Ask the school about the result where necessary and focus on practical next choices.
How an awarded AL8 differs from Ungraded
At Standard level, AL8 is one of the eight valid PSLE subject achievement bands and corresponds to the published reference range below 20 marks. A result reported as AL8 is an awarded grade that contributes eight to the normal overall score. In contrast, the word Ungraded is not a ninth numeric AL and should not be substituted into the arithmetic as eight.
If English AL5, Mathematics AL6, Science AL8 and Mother Tongue AL6 are all officially awarded, the overall score is 5 + 6 + 8 + 6 = 25. The child has a reported Science grade of AL8, not an ungraded Science subject. The normal Score 25 eligibility rules apply to the official total, subject to any special case documented by the school.
If Science is instead shown without an awarded AL because of an unusual examination circumstance, do not simply put 8 in its place. Ask the school how the official score and Secondary 1 eligibility have been determined. Special consideration, subject absence or an examination administrative issue may require an individual official explanation.
| Example status | Illustrative English / Maths / Science / MTL | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| All four Standard subjects graded | AL5 / AL6 / AL8 / AL6 | Add the four reported AL values = 25 |
| Higher Chinese Ungraded, four core subjects graded | AL5 / AL6 / AL8 / AL6 plus HCL Ungraded | Use the same four-subject aggregate; HCL is separate |
| Science not awarded a normal AL | AL5 / AL6 / ungraded or unclear / AL6 | Do not invent Science AL8; contact the school |
| Foundation Science C awarded | AL5 / AL6 / Foundation C / AL6 | Use official Foundation equivalence C = 8 |
These examples illustrate correct interpretation, not the outcomes of any individual candidate. The result slip and school records take precedence over generic examples.
What if the child took Foundation English, Mathematics, Science or Mother Tongue?
Foundation subjects use A, B and C grades. For the Secondary 1 posting total, Foundation A is equivalent to AL6, B to AL7 and C to AL8. A Foundation C is therefore a valid awarded grade from a different curriculum level. It is not an ungraded subject and does not imply that the child did not sit the paper.
A family seeing the letter C may think of a conventional report-book grade or an English alphabetic ranking. In this system it has a defined Foundation scoring role. If the child took Foundation Mathematics C, the prescribed equivalent is eight for the aggregate. That fact alone does not determine the Posting Group, because the other three subject ALs and the English/Mathematics conditions also matter.
For a full set of mixed-level examples, see Mixed Standard and Foundation Subjects: Worked Examples.
What if the result says Mother Tongue Language (Exempted)?
An approved Mother Tongue exemption is a distinct administrative and educational status. Some pupils are exempted from an MTL paper, while others have approved arrangements to study a different Asian or foreign language in lieu of the PSLE-examined MTL. The result slip can reflect that status under SEAB’s explanatory notes.
The overall PSLE Score is not calculated as a three-subject sum just because a child did not take an MTL paper under approved circumstances. Official procedures provide an assigned equivalent for posting. Parents should rely on the issued result and ask the school if the assigned treatment is unclear. It is not correct to put zero, AL1 or AL8 into the empty-looking position by guesswork.
Also distinguish an exemption from a registered Non-Tamil Indian Language examination. Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Panjabi and Urdu are specifically listed as examined PSLE subjects at Standard and Foundation levels. Their reported subject grade can form the fourth component of the total; the language name alone does not imply exemption.
What if a compulsory paper was missed because of illness?
A missed component can require a separate examination procedure. SEAB has provisions for eligible candidates affected by documented illness, injury or compassionate circumstances, including special consideration processes where the criteria are met. Such a case should be reported promptly through the primary school. It does not mean the family can independently choose a replacement raw mark or AL.
If an official projected or adjusted result is awarded, it is handled under the examination authority’s rules. If no subject grade is awarded, the individual result status and next educational route require clarification. A parent cannot determine the correct posting outcome by substituting a guessed AL8 simply because a paper was not completed.
For practical context, see When a Child Is Sick or Misses a PSLE Paper.
When will parents receive the 2026 documents?
As of 1 November 2026, SEAB’s published key dates give 24–25 November 2026 as the tentative PSLE results-release window. The exact release date is announced after examination processes are completed. Parents should follow the official announcement and the primary school’s collection arrangements rather than assume that both dates are actual release days.
When results are issued, the school provides the result slip and examination certificate together. A parent who cannot collect in person should follow the school’s permitted collection arrangements. Do not assume that a photograph shared on a chat app replaces the official document for every later administrative requirement.
After collection, check the child’s name and subject entries, read the overall PSLE Score, confirm Posting Group eligibility, and take note of the Secondary 1 school-choice submission deadline. A puzzle about an ungraded entry should be raised immediately with the school, rather than delaying all six school choices on a speculative interpretation.
Can a candidate receive a PSLE certificate if one subject is Ungraded?
SEAB’s published certificate rule is that a candidate receives the examination certificate if they have been awarded a grade for at least one PSLE subject. Ungraded subjects are not printed on that certificate. Therefore, the presence of one ungraded subject is not the same as a blanket rule that no certificate can be issued in any circumstance.
The family’s question should still be about the official outcome and school-posting eligibility, not merely possession of the certificate. If the main subject results do not form the expected four-AL total, consult the school. Do not infer that a certificate guarantees a particular Posting Group or that the omitted subject has been silently awarded a passing mark.
What if the family loses the certificate later?
SEAB treats PSLE result slips and certificates as controlled documents and says it does not issue replacement originals when they are lost. However, past examination results can be retrieved digitally through the individual’s Skills Passport in the MySkillsFuture portal if the individual holds a Singpass account and the result is available. Otherwise SEAB provides a process for obtaining a Statement of Results.
As of the October 2026 SEAB retrieval guidance, digital PSLE results were available for examination years from 1976 through 2025. A newly issued 2026 result would need to become available in the relevant digital system before this historical retrieval option applies. Parents should not assume a current-year certificate can be downloaded immediately on results day.
Keep the original documents safely and avoid uploading full result slips to public groups. If a legitimate institution requests verification later, use the authorised official digital or Statement of Results process rather than an edited screenshot.
The difference between a result slip photograph and an official explanation
Families may receive a cropped photograph that shows a subject label but not its explanatory note or a line containing the overall score. In such cases the information is incomplete. Do not circulate a claim that the child “failed the whole PSLE” merely because the photograph contains the word Ungraded. The overall result and relevant subjects must be read together.
A complete interpretation may require knowing which paper the entry refers to, whether the subject is Higher Mother Tongue, whether the pupil was exempted, and whether the main subject AL was awarded. These are not details that can be reconstructed reliably from a cropped image.
The practical communication should be specific: “We need the explanatory note and school clarification for this subject status.” That is more useful than asking relatives or classmates to guess what the grade must have been.
What should parents check on the day the results are collected?
- Confirm that the result slip and examination certificate belong to the correct pupil.
- Read the exact names and assessment levels of English, Mathematics, Science and Mother Tongue.
- Note the official awarded ALs or Foundation grades and any exemption annotation.
- Read Higher Mother Tongue, if taken, as a separate Distinction/Merit/Pass/Ungraded result.
- Do not automatically treat Ungraded as AL8, Foundation C or zero.
- Confirm the official four-subject PSLE Score and Posting Group eligibility.
- Read the explanatory notes accompanying the official documents.
- Ask the school promptly if a core subject has no awarded grade or the overall score appears inconsistent.
- Keep the documents private and safe; note any permitted review or appeal deadline.
- Use the official school-choice instructions rather than making admissions decisions from an unofficial reconstructed score.
Frequently asked questions
Does Higher Chinese Ungraded add eight points to PSLE Score?
No. Higher Chinese is separate from the four counted subjects and is reported using Distinction, Merit, Pass or Ungraded. It is not a fifth numeric AL.
Is Standard Science AL8 the same as Science Ungraded?
No. AL8 is an awarded achievement band. An ungraded entry is not a numeric AL; if a compulsory subject has no grade, the school must clarify the official result status.
Does Foundation C mean the child missed the examination?
No. Foundation C is a valid Foundation grade, equivalent to AL8 in the posting total. It is not synonymous with absence or no grade.
Does an ungraded subject appear on the PSLE examination certificate?
SEAB states that ungraded subjects are not reflected on the examination certificate. The result slip and explanatory notes should be read for the complete reporting context.
Can a candidate receive a certificate if another subject is ungraded?
SEAB’s certificate rule requires an awarded grade in at least one PSLE subject. That does not itself settle the pupil’s overall Posting Group or eligibility if another core subject has an unusual status.
If a child is officially exempt from Mother Tongue, should parents add just three ALs?
No. The official scoring method uses a prescribed assigned-equivalent treatment for approved MTL exemptions. Use the published result, not a homemade three-subject total.
Can SEAB replace a lost original PSLE certificate?
SEAB says no replacement original is issued. Available digital past results or an official Statement of Results may be obtained through the authorised processes.
The conclusion: a missing grade is not a number to invent
A PSLE result slip can contain different labels because Standard, Foundation, Higher Mother Tongue and officially exempted subjects are reported differently. Ungraded is not automatically AL8, and an omission from the certificate is not proof of a particular score. The responsible parent reads both documents, checks the explanatory notes and seeks prompt official clarification where a main subject is unclear. Only the real issued PSLE Score and eligibility should guide the child’s Secondary 1 choices.
