Information about Full Subject Based Banding for Parents | FullSBB Polytechnic EAE 2028 Portfolio Conditional Offer and SEC Grades

Polytechnic Early Admissions Exercise (Poly-EAE) is a way for students to be considered for a diploma based on demonstrated aptitude and interest before their final national examination results are released. It continues under Singapore’s new post-secondary admission arrangements from 2028. But a successful EAE selection is initially a conditional offer, not permission to ignore the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) results or the diploma’s minimum entry requirements.

For the first Full Subject-Based Banding (Full SBB) cohort graduating through SEC in 2027, the 2028 Polytechnic intake introduces a revised academic calculation: the direct Year 1 ELR2B2 pathway permits four eligible G3 subjects and a defined fifth best subject at G2 or G3, subject to course requirements. Parents must separate three decisions: whether the child has the aptitude for a particular diploma, whether the official EAE exercise accepts the child’s candidature, and whether their eventual SEC results satisfy the academic conditions.

  • What continues: MOE confirmed in March 2026 that Poly-EAE remains alongside the new 2028 Post-Secondary Admissions Exercise (PSE).
  • What EAE recognises: authentic interest, relevant projects, achievements, aptitude, interviews and other course-specific selection evidence.
  • What an offer means: conditional admission pending acceptance and eventual academic eligibility, not a guaranteed place regardless of results.
  • What G-levels mean: the student must check the diploma’s actual requirements; not every course accepts a G2 Mathematics result.
  • What is changing: the 2028 direct Polytechnic Year 1 aggregate generally uses four G3 subjects and a final eligible G2/G3 component.
  • What is not yet fixed: follow the eventual published EAE 2027 application schedule for the 2028 intake rather than reusing an earlier cohort’s dates.
  • First parent action: select a genuine field of interest and locate the official diploma page before building a portfolio.

Why Poly-EAE and the new PSE are different

The 2028 PSE brings the major JC, Millennia Institute, Polytechnic and ITE applications into a new coordinated process after the 2027 SEC results are released in January 2028. Poly-EAE, by contrast, allows candidates to seek conditional admission earlier, based on interest and aptitude in particular diploma areas. The two mechanisms occur at different decision stages.

MOE’s 2026 Committee of Supply announcement explicitly says Poly-EAE, ITE-EAE and DSA-JC will continue. The announcement does not mean that every operational detail of the 2028 intake was already published in November 2026. Parents should check the actual opening dates and applicable rules closer to the application.

The useful distinction is this: EAE considers whether the student is suited to a course; the final SEC results still determine whether the stated academic conditions for confirming the place have been met.

How the first SEC cohort changes the paperwork

The first SEC examinations take place in 2027 for the ordinary four-year Full SBB cohort that entered Secondary 1 in 2024. Students may take subjects at G1, G2 or G3. Their certificate records the actual subject and level for each examination entry rather than a single all-subject stream.

This has consequences for diploma entry. The overall Secondary 1 Posting Group is no longer a sufficient description of the applicant’s qualification profile. A student may have G3 English and Mathematics with other subjects at different levels. Another student may be strongly interested in a technical diploma but lack a particular G3 prerequisite.

Write the subject list before discussing EAE eligibility with the school or Polytechnic. For future applicants, include the actual subject codes, current levels and expected results. For candidates already completing SEC, use the final official entries and marks.

What evidence belongs in a genuine Poly-EAE portfolio?

A useful portfolio documents work the student actually performed. For design, it might show sketches, prototypes, design decisions and improvements after testing. For computing, it could include code or a digital project with a clear account of what the student built and why. For hospitality, it might show relevant practical experience, responsible volunteering or service skills.

The strongest evidence explains what problem was solved, what the applicant personally did, what went wrong, and what the student learned. Four well-explained projects can be more persuasive than forty disconnected certificates if they show real interest and ability. Actual Polytechnic selection criteria remain decisive.

A parent should resist pressure to purchase an expensive “guaranteed EAE portfolio”. No external course provider can promise that a Polytechnic will select the applicant. The student’s own reasoning and reflection must remain visible, including in any interview.

What to expect at interviews or aptitude assessments

Polytechnics may use interviews, aptitude tests, portfolios or course-specific activities. Selection varies across diplomas; it is not a uniform national set of questions. Ask the child to explain why the course interests them, what they have already tried and what they learned from imperfect work.

A student interested in engineering should be able to describe a mechanical, electronic or mathematical problem they investigated. A student interested in media might discuss a film, writing or editing project and explain creative decisions. A learner interested in healthcare should understand that professional responsibility, communication and relevant academic prerequisites also matter.

Practise honest conversation rather than memorising one grand speech. A panel may ask follow-up questions precisely to test whether the student owns the work presented.

Does Poly-EAE mean SEC grades no longer matter?

No. Earlier MOE and Polytechnic guidance has consistently described EAE offers as conditional upon meeting academic entry requirements. The official Polytechnic EAE information explains aptitude-based selection and conditional entry for the applicable exercise. Its November 2026 content may still reference the 2027 Polytechnic intake and the old O-Level system; do not copy those exact old thresholds into a 2028 SEC candidature.

The revised 2028 Polytechnic Year 1 ELR2B2 formula recognises one eligible G2 or G3 best-subject component while requiring the other four subjects at G3. The specific course still has minimum entry requirements and category rules. A conditional EAE offer is therefore valuable only if the student can meet the actual academic conditions.

If the family’s child has a mixed G-level profile, ask the Polytechnic which subject levels and grades count for the target diploma rather than assuming the headline reform applies to all courses identically.

The G2 Mathematics problem parents should check early

A student may hear that one G2 subject can count for Polytechnic admission from 2028 and conclude that G2 Mathematics is accepted by every diploma. That inference is wrong. Many diplomas continue to require G3 Mathematics or Additional Mathematics under their minimum requirements or relevant-subject calculation.

Republic Polytechnic’s Full SBB admission guide describes the four-plus-one aggregate and warns that course-specific prerequisites remain important. A family considering a technology, science or engineering field should inspect the actual course requirements before deciding on Mathematics subject levels in Secondary 2.

This is not a reason to make every student take the most demanding Mathematics level at all costs. It is a reason to connect a genuine future goal to the correct prerequisite and then build the knowledge needed to meet it.

Early admission is not an escape from studying

Imagine a student who loves robotics and has built several credible projects. Their EAE application is successful, but they then stop preparing for English and Mathematics because they assume the portfolio is enough. The eventual SEC results may fail the minimum conditions needed to confirm the offer.

That outcome would be avoidable through clear planning. The application and the national examinations should be treated as complementary work. The portfolio expresses the student’s interest and applied ability; the SEC grades confirm that they have a suitable foundation for the diploma.

Parents can help by giving the child a simple two-part plan: maintain the course-related projects and protect the exact academic subjects necessary for eligibility.

What if the child has no competition medals?

A genuine applicant need not assume that national medals are the only evidence of aptitude. Polytechnics can assess relevant experience, personal projects, courses and interviews according to their published procedures. A student who built and revised a useful prototype may have meaningful evidence even if they never won a large award.

This does not guarantee selection. It means the family should examine the actual course’s selection criteria before interpreting one missing certificate as a permanent disadvantage.

Ask the student to choose a project they can explain from beginning to end. If the work is mostly copied from a video or generated by an AI tool, ask what decisions they themselves made. Ownership and understanding are crucial.

Can students apply to several diplomas?

The official EAE exercise sets the number of choices and the process for ranking them. Those details should be taken from the relevant year and candidate category. A historic 2026 application form is not a reliable substitute for the final 2027 application arrangements for the 2028 intake.

Before ranking options, compare course modules, industry opportunities, attendance expectations, campus locations and minimum entry requirements. A course that sounds attractive may involve substantial Mathematics, laboratory work, design critique or extended service hours that the student should understand.

Rank only programmes the child would seriously consider attending, following the actual exercise’s published rules.

A parent’s role before the application opens

The family can prepare without speculating about a deadline. First, identify a few course fields of genuine interest. Second, visit current Polytechnic websites and read their diploma descriptions. Third, help the student organise authentic evidence of practical work. Fourth, meet the school education and career guidance counsellor if clarification is needed.

Fifth, record the actual G-levels the student is studying. Sixth, check which current academic gaps might threaten the qualifying subject combination. Seventh, wait for the official 2028-intake EAE requirements before treating application details as settled.

This is a more reliable approach than drilling generic interview scripts or purchasing a portfolio package with no evidence of fit.

How acceptance interacts with later PSE choices

An accepted, subsequently confirmed early admission generally affects eligibility to participate in later main posting exercises; the precise 2028 rules and cancellation windows must come from the official EAE documents. Earlier O-Level/JAE procedures should not be blindly applied after the introduction of PSE.

Parents should ask: at which stage is the offer conditional, when does acceptance become binding, under what circumstances can it be withdrawn, and what options remain if the academic condition is not met? Save the official offer and its terms before confirming anything.

One clear record of the actual offer is more useful than competing parent-chat interpretations.

Example: a student interested in business analytics

Imagine a student who enjoys organising information, interpreting charts and building small digital projects. They hope to enter a business analytics diploma. The family should check whether the course assumes particular Mathematics proficiency, English communication skills or other subject grades. The portfolio might show a small investigation into real data, with an explanation of method and limitations.

During the interview, the child should be able to distinguish observation from conclusion. If a chart showed sales increased during a period, can they explain why that does not automatically prove a marketing campaign caused the increase? Genuine analytical thinking can be more revealing than a visually elaborate slideshow.

The family can then protect the relevant SEC prerequisites while supporting the student’s project work.

Example: a student who enjoys design but struggles with exams

Another learner may show strong visual reasoning and persistence in practical projects but find long timed assessments difficult. EAE offers an opportunity for their aptitude to be seen. It does not remove the need for minimum academic eligibility.

The parent should help identify whether the examination difficulty is missing vocabulary, weak time management, unfamiliar question structure or another issue. Targeted support can protect qualifying grades while preserving the student’s creative work.

A useful support plan should increase the child’s independent ability. It should not replace the student’s portfolio with adult-produced materials.

Parent checklist for the 2028-intake Poly-EAE

  • Confirm the actual application year and intake year.
  • Read the selected diplomas’ current programme and minimum-entry pages.
  • Verify the student’s precise G1/G2/G3 subjects.
  • Identify the course’s ELR2B2 category and G3 prerequisites.
  • Build a truthful portfolio with clear personal contributions.
  • Prepare to discuss choices, mistakes and learning in an interview.
  • Check application, shortlist, offer and acceptance deadlines only in the official notice.
  • Continue SEC preparation after a conditional offer.
  • Save the offer terms, including confirmation and cancellation conditions.
  • Compare EAE with the eligible post-results PSE pathway rather than assuming they are identical.

Parent FAQs

### Will Polytechnic EAE still exist after Full SBB introduces SEC? Yes. MOE’s 2026 announcement explicitly says Poly-EAE continues under the new 2028 admission framework.

### Can a student apply with mixed G2 and G3 subjects? Eligibility depends on the exact candidate category and the target diploma’s current academic requirements. Do not infer approval from one G2 allowance in the general ELR2B2 formula.

### Is a successful EAE interview a guaranteed place? Not until the applicable conditional offer has been accepted and the academic conditions have been satisfied.

### Are the application dates already confirmed for the 2028 Polytechnic intake? Use the official application notice for that intake when published. Earlier exercises provide examples but not a guaranteed future calendar.

### Does the student need expensive enrichment to qualify? No universally mandated paid portfolio service exists. Relevant genuine work and the official selection criteria matter.
