Learning vocabulary for Singapore school holidays in 2027 helps parents and students understand dates, attendance, school closures and arrangements for family care. Start with term, semester, vacation, scheduled school holiday, public holiday, day off in lieu, school closure and attendance. These words tell you whether school is open, who the date applies to and whether another service is available.
For MOE Kindergartens, primary schools and secondary schools, the 2027 school year generally runs from 4 January to 19 November. The four main breaks are 13–21 March, 29 May–27 June, 4–12 September and 20 November–31 December. But there are exceptions: Kindergarten 1 and Primary 1 start on 4 January, Kindergarten 2 and Primary 2–6 start on 5 January, while certain secondary schools used for SEC written examinations finish their final term earlier. Different calendars apply to JC and MI cohorts.
The full calendar dates belong in the existing Singapore School Holidays 2027 guide and the MOE announcement. This article has a different purpose: it teaches readers how to interpret a school notice correctly, identify what the dates cover, and make useful arrangements instead of guessing from a calendar screenshot.
Quick answer: seven checks before planning a school-holiday trip
- Calendar type: is the notice about an MOE school, MOE Kindergarten, JC, MI or an international/private school?
- Year and term: does the information explicitly say 2027 and identify the relevant term?
- First and last days: does the vacation period include weekends and public holidays?
- Exceptions: does the notice identify a different start date for a cohort, a school closure or an exam venue?
- Student care: is the school, student care centre or KCare service separately open or closed?
- Attendance: is an apparently free weekday actually a normal school day?
- Travel decision: are flights, accommodation and any leave arrangements confirmed against the correct dates?
2027 school calendar at a glance: the dates behind the vocabulary
| Term or break | MOE Kindergarten, primary and secondary dates | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Term 1 | Mon 4 January – Fri 12 March 2027 | P1 and K1 begin 4 Jan; P2–6 and K2 begin 5 Jan. |
| March break | Sat 13 March – Sun 21 March 2027 | Nine consecutive calendar days including weekends. |
| Term 2 | Mon 22 March – Fri 28 May 2027 | School resumes on Monday 22 March. |
| Mid-year break | Sat 29 May – Sun 27 June 2027 | An interval between Semester 1 and Semester 2. |
| Term 3 | Mon 28 June – Fri 3 September 2027 | Teachers’ Day falls on the stated final day of Term 3. |
| September break | Sat 4 September – Sun 12 September 2027 | School generally resumes Monday 13 September. |
| Term 4 | Mon 13 September – Fri 19 November 2027 | Schools hosting SEC written examinations may end earlier on 29 October. |
| Year-end break | Sat 20 November – Fri 31 December 2027 | The standard MOE primary/secondary and kindergarten year-end vacation. |
The table uses the MOE Kindergarten, primary and secondary school calendar. Junior college and Millennia Institute dates are not automatically identical. First-year JC and MI students begin on 3 February 2027, while certain continuing cohorts begin on 11 January. Their year-end arrangements can depend on the course and A-Level examination calendar. Always select the right school type before copying a date into the family planner.
Definition lock: 15 school calendar words explained in real situations
| Term | Plain-English meaning | What parents should check |
|---|---|---|
| School term | A scheduled teaching period during the academic year. | Which teaching days the notice covers. |
| Semester | A larger division of the academic year, often containing two terms. | Whether the break is between terms or semesters. |
| Vacation | A designated period when regular classes do not run. | Whether childcare and student programmes run separately. |
| Scheduled school holiday | A specific day designated by MOE for schools. | Whether it applies to the child’s school level. |
| Public holiday | A gazetted holiday declared for Singapore. | It is not always the same as a school-only holiday. |
| Day off in lieu | A substitute day off designated under the relevant rule or MOE arrangement. | Whether schools, general offices and care services close. |
| School closure | A day on which a school or stated school services are closed. | Do not assume a separately operated centre follows the same schedule. |
| School calendar | A record of term dates, holidays and other official dates. | Check the issuing authority and calendar year. |
| Attendance | Being present for school or a scheduled obligation. | A family trip is not a substitute for checking attendance rules. |
| Examination venue | A school used to conduct official examinations. | Its final-term arrangements may differ. |
| Reporting date | The date a student must first attend or report. | Different cohorts can have different first days. |
| Orientation | An introductory programme for new students. | Check whether it is mandatory and what time to report. |
| CCA | Co-curricular activity, sometimes scheduled outside normal lessons. | Ask whether sessions run during some holiday periods. |
| Enrichment programme | An additional learning or activity programme. | It may have its own dates and fees. |
| Student care / KCare | Care services for eligible children or age groups. | Confirm the operating calendar independently where necessary. |
The school holidays and other days off that should not be confused
| 2027 date | Correct description | Why the label matters |
|---|---|---|
| Tue 9 February | MOE-designated day off in lieu for schools after Chinese New Year. | MOE states that schools, general offices, student care centres and KCare centres will be closed. |
| Mon 3 May | MOE-designated day off in lieu for schools after Labour Day. | A school closure is not automatically the same as every parent’s paid workplace day off. |
| Mon 5 July | School holiday following Youth Day, which falls on Sunday 4 July. | It is not a separate gazetted public holiday for all workers. |
| Tue 10 August | Scheduled school holiday on the day after National Day. | A parent may still need to work on that day. |
| Fri 3 September | Teachers’ Day school holiday. | It falls at the end of the stated Term 3. |
| Fri 8 October | Children’s Day school holiday for primary schools and primary sections of full schools. | Do not assume all secondary students share the same entitlement. |
| Mon 27 December | MOE-designated day off in lieu for schools after Christmas. | It falls in the year-end break, with specified school-related closures. |
Why calendars have boundaries that words can hide
1. ‘School holidays’ and ‘public holidays’ answer different questions
The phrase public holiday describes a nationally gazetted day with its own legal context. The phrase school holiday describes a break within a school’s academic arrangements. Parents should not infer that a school holiday creates paid leave at work. The two calendars overlap, but neither can replace the other. For employment terminology, read Learning Vocabulary for Singapore Public Holidays 2027.
2. ‘From’ and ‘to’ require careful reading
A notice saying “Vacation from Saturday 29 May to Sunday 27 June” identifies the calendar boundaries of the break. A family planning a return flight should consider arrival time, transport and the first school reporting day on Monday 28 June. The important vocabulary includes inclusive, resumption and reporting date. These words turn a pair of dates into a practical plan.
3. ‘School closed’ and ‘student care closed’ may have different meanings
A child may not have ordinary lessons while a separate care programme still operates, depending on its own terms. MOE explicitly states that general offices, student care centres and KCare centres close on the designated school off-in-lieu days identified in its 2027 notice. Do not project that specific rule onto every weekend, ordinary vacation day or private provider; check the relevant centre.
4. ‘Term ends early’ does not automatically mean every school finishes early
MOE’s 2027 announcement has an exception for schools used as venues for Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education written examinations: their final term ends on Friday 29 October 2027. The phrase schools used as venues restricts the claim to particular institutions. Before making travel arrangements, ask whether the child’s school is in that group.
Read an actual-sounding notice: a simple comprehension exercise
Fictional practice notice: “Term 4 teaching ends on Friday 19 November. Primary students taking part in the optional holiday camp should register by 5 November. School attendance is expected until the last scheduled school day. The student care service will publish a separate holiday programme timetable.”
| Phrase from the notice | Meaning | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Term 4 teaching ends | Regular teaching finishes on the stated day. | That all activities in all schools end together. |
| Optional holiday camp | Participation is voluntary under the stated programme. | That the camp is part of compulsory lessons. |
| Register by 5 November | A registration deadline exists. | That submitting late will be accepted. |
| Attendance is expected | Students should attend during the stated school period. | That a family booking excuses absence. |
| Separate programme timetable | A different calendar will be supplied. | That student care follows exactly the lesson calendar. |
Try rewriting the notice in three sentences: (1) When do classes end? (2) What, if anything, requires registration? (3) What cannot yet be confirmed? If you can answer all three without guessing, you are learning how school-calendar language actually works.
Common mistakes and better decisions
- Copying an international school’s term dates into an MOE family calendar. Use the issuing school’s official calendar and check its academic-year system.
- Assuming Children’s Day applies identically to all secondary students. Read MOE’s primary-specific scope.
- Assuming parents are off work whenever children are off school. Compare MOE and employer calendars separately.
- Ignoring year-level start dates. Primary 1 and Kindergarten 1 start on 4 January 2027; some older cohorts begin 5 January.
- Booking non-refundable flights before checking exam or orientation arrangements. Confirm exact school notices first.
- Assuming student care operates during every holiday. Read the centre’s own operating notice and closure exceptions.
Ten-minute learning routine for parents and students
| Minutes | Exercise | Learning goal |
|---|---|---|
| 0–2 | Open the official MOE 2027 calendar and identify the correct school type. | Recognise the source and its scope. |
| 2–4 | Write four term starts and four vacation periods in your own words. | Interpret dates rather than merely copy them. |
| 4–6 | Find one scheduled school holiday and one public holiday. | Distinguish different categories. |
| 6–8 | Explain one exception such as K1/P1 reporting or a school day off in lieu. | Read boundary conditions. |
| 8–10 | Review a fictional notice and list what remains to be confirmed. | Practise useful questions and uncertainty. |
FAQ: Singapore school holiday vocabulary 2027
When do MOE primary and secondary schools start in 2027?
The school year starts on Monday 4 January 2027. MOE specifies that Primary 1 and Kindergarten 1 start then, while Primary 2–6 and Kindergarten 2 start on Tuesday 5 January. Check your individual school’s instructions as well.
Are school holidays the same for junior colleges?
Not completely. MOE publishes different starting and year-end arrangements for junior college and Millennia Institute cohorts. The standard primary/secondary vacation table should not be treated as universal.
Does a school holiday mean my employer must give me leave?
Not by itself. Workplace leave and public holiday rights operate under different rules and agreements. Check your employer’s policy and MOM’s official guidance.
Are student care centres open on 9 February and 3 May 2027?
MOE’s 2027 announcement explicitly identifies those designated school days off in lieu as days when schools, general offices, student care centres and KCare centres are closed. Confirm any separate provider’s arrangements directly.
Is it safe to book a holiday using a calendar screenshot?
Use the screenshot as a reminder, not the sole authority. Verify the date against the current MOE notice, your child’s school and any examination or care arrangements before making non-refundable plans.
