Did you know that recognising a familiar model answer is different from choosing an answer for a new question? For Bukit Timah families, ask the tutor what the child should retain from the model: a fact, definition, relationship, reasoning step or writing technique. Avoid treating every complete response as a script to reproduce.
Try one small check. Cover the model and ask your child to explain why a key step or sentence belongs there. Then change the question slightly. If the student repeats the old answer even though the task has changed, return to the underlying idea with the tutor.
Remembering accurate knowledge can support learning, but the response must still fit the task. Use models to study choices, attempt a fresh answer and compare the result. Keep the child’s original work visible so the tutor can see what was learned independently.
Find your next step
Choose the part that matches your question and try one manageable learning check.
SECTION 1 OF 5
Separate essential knowledge from a complete script
A term, formula or subject convention may need to be recalled accurately. A whole essay or worked solution contains many choices tied to a particular question. Ask which parts remain valid across examples and which depend on the original conditions.
In Mathematics, knowing a formula does not show that the student can choose when to use it. In Science, remembering a definition does not automatically explain a new observation. Identify the role of the remembered information in the actual response.
SECTION 2 OF 5
Study why the model works
Choose one decision: the equation selected, the evidence used or the sentence connecting a cause to an effect. Ask the student to point to the part of the question that justifies it. The tutor can clarify any missing connection.
The Institute of Education Sciences study guide recommends alternating worked solutions with students’ own problem-solving attempts. A practical use here is to move from examining a model to trying a related task without the model in view.

SECTION 3 OF 5
Change the conditions before checking transfer
Alter a number, context, requested comparison or audience as appropriate. Ask what the student would keep and what must change. An answer that fits the original question may become irrelevant when the task changes.
For composition, study how the model builds a situation, decision and consequence rather than copying a plot into every prompt. Use the existing composition guide for deeper story-structure teaching. A new writing task should remain the student’s own response.

SECTION 4 OF 5
Use feedback to repair a specific choice
Compare the child’s attempt with the model after an independent try. Identify the precise difference that matters: a missing condition, unsupported claim or unclear link. Avoid replacing the whole answer before the student understands the correction.
The aim is not to make every response look identical. Ask the tutor whether another valid route or phrasing meets the task. Where exact terminology matters, learn it accurately; where reasoning is required, explain the relationship.

SECTION 5 OF 5
Check the lesson without revealing the script
At a later lesson, use a fresh question and note any cues needed. A secure response should draw on accurate knowledge while responding to the current task. This check is more informative than asking how many model pages were memorised.
