Did you know? In standard British English, practice is the noun and practise is the verb. A student attends football practice and practises passing.
The words are closely related, so meaning alone is not enough. Ask what job the word performs. If it names a session, habit or professional work, choose the noun practice. If it describes the action of rehearsing or repeatedly doing, choose the verb practise.
Try this now: replace the blank with training. If the sentence works, use practice. Replace it with rehearse. If that works, use practise.
Choose the task you need
1. Choose by noun or verb
The spelling difference follows the grammatical job in British English. This is similar to the noun–verb contrast in advice/advise, although the pronunciation of practice and practise is normally the same.
| Sentence frame | Word class | Correct form |
|---|---|---|
| Regular ___ builds fluency. | noun | practice |
| Please ___ the opening paragraph. | verb | practise |
| The team has ___ after school. | noun | practice |
| She ___ every evening. | verb | practises |
| It is common ___ to check sources. | noun | practice |
The final letter should be the last decision. First determine whether the sentence needs a thing or an action.
2. Use sentence-frame tests that transfer
A reliable test preserves grammar and meaning. Substitution exposes the word class without asking the learner to guess which spelling looks familiar.
| Original frame | Test word | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Daily ___ helps. | training | practice |
| I will ___ aloud. | rehearse | practise |
| The doctor’s ___ opens at nine. | clinic / professional work | practice |
| They ___ careful turn-taking. | rehearse | practise |
| That is good ___. | training / habit | practice |
- Determiners such as the, a and this often introduce the noun.
- Auxiliaries such as will, can and should are followed by the base verb practise.
- Verb endings produce practises, practised and practising in British spelling.
3. Separate British and American spelling
Cambridge Dictionary labels practise as the UK verb spelling and notes that American English generally uses practice for the verb as well as the noun.
| Variety | Noun | Verb |
|---|---|---|
| British English | practice | practise |
| American English | practice | practice |
A student should follow the spelling convention expected by the school or assessment and keep the variety consistent within the same piece of writing. Do not “correct” a legitimate American spelling without checking the required convention.
Original teaching illustration: label the top of a short passage “British spelling” and edit every target consistently. This tests a writing system, not a one-word memory trick.
4. Diagnose why the spelling changes
The same surface error can arise from weak word-class knowledge, regional inconsistency or simple proofreading.
| Observed response | Likely unstable point | Repair prompt |
|---|---|---|
| Uses practice everywhere in a British-spelling task | Noun–verb contrast is missing | Training or rehearse? |
| Uses practise after “the” | Noun frame is missed | What thing is being named? |
| Writes practised correctly but practice incorrectly | Inflection memorised without base-word control | What is the base verb? |
| Switches conventions within one paragraph | Style consistency is weak | Which English variety is this piece using? |
A useful check uses four forms in one mini-paragraph: practice, practise, practised and practising. The learner should explain each choice.
5. Transfer the choice into authentic writing
Isolated blanks are only the beginning. In composition, reports and reflections, the writer must identify the word’s job while also controlling tense and sentence meaning.
Original teaching illustration: edit a short reflection
Draft: “Our basketball practise was useful because we practice passing under pressure.” British-English revision: “Our basketball practice was useful because we practised passing under pressure.” The first word names the session; the second describes the past action.
- Underline the complete noun or verb phrase.
- Test with training or rehearse.
- Choose the spelling convention.
- Add the correct tense ending.
- Read the whole paragraph for consistency.
This routine supports later editing because it connects spelling to grammar. The learner is not storing two isolated spellings; they are making a reasoned choice inside a sentence.
When tuition can help
Tuition may help when the child knows the rule orally but cannot apply it while managing tense, paragraph meaning and proofreading. A tutor can compare a word-class sort, sentence transformations and a fresh paragraph to see where transfer breaks.
A useful review starts with one fresh task, the learner’s explanation and the exact point where the reasoning changes. eduKateSG’s verified 3-pax format is designed for close observation and precise feedback; it is not a promise of a particular grade.
