What the similar-looking labels actually mean
Is PSLE AL1 the same as secondary G1, or does PSLE AL7 mean the same as a G3 SEC D7 grade? No. PSLE Achievement Levels (ALs), secondary G1/G2/G3 subject levels, and Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) grades are three different systems. AL7 is a Primary 6 Standard subject achievement band, G1 is a General secondary academic subject standard, and D7 is a grade on a later G3 national examination. Matching numbers or letters do not make these concepts equivalent.
Consider three families. One sees Primary 6 Mathematics AL2 and Secondary 1 G2 Mathematics and thinks the school is keeping the same achievement level. Another interprets a future G3 D7 as if the pupil’s raw mark fell into the PSLE AL7 percentage band. A third sees Foundation AL A and assumes it equals SEC G1 A. None of those comparisons follows from MOE or SEAB grading rules. The syllabus, education stage and purpose of the label have changed.
Full Subject-Based Banding (Full SBB), implemented from the 2024 Secondary 1 cohort, uses Posting Groups for admission and allows subjects at G1, G2 and G3 according to strengths and readiness. The SEC begins in 2027 for the first graduating cohort and records each registered subject at its actual G level. Understanding the labels prevents wrong subject books, misleading comparisons and incorrect assumptions about post-secondary course eligibility.
| Label | Education stage | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| PSLE AL1–AL8 | Primary 6 Standard subject | Achievement band in the PSLE |
| PSLE Foundation A–C | Primary 6 Foundation subject | Primary Achievement Level and mapped PSLE Score value |
| PSLE Score 4–32 | End of Primary 6 | Secondary school Posting Group and school choice |
| Posting Groups 1, 2, 3 | Secondary 1 admission | Initial admission and indicative subject level |
| G1, G2, G3 | Secondary academic subject | Curriculum demand and SEC subject standard |
| SEC G1 A–E | National secondary examination | G1 subject grade |
| SEC G2 1–6 | National secondary examination | G2 subject grade |
| SEC G3 A1–9 | National secondary examination | G3 subject grade |
Do you know? Answers to the most common grading mix-ups
Do you know? Do you know? Does PSLE AL7 mean the same thing as G3 D7?
No. SEAB awards PSLE AL7 for a particular primary Standard subject using the Primary 6 achievement band. MOE publishes the AL7 raw-mark range as 20–44%. G3 D7, by contrast, is a grade in the G3 SEC secondary examination scale. The two papers have different content, purposes and examination stages.
The parent should look at which examination was sat, the year and the exact subject. D7 must be understood within the G3 grading framework and the intended institution’s criteria. No official rule says a G3 D7 represents the PSLE AL7 mark range simply because both contain a 7.
Do you know? Do you know? Is AL1 the highest level while G1 is the lowest?
AL1 is the strongest PSLE Standard subject band. G1, however, names the first of three secondary General academic subject standards and is mapped from the previous Normal (Technical) standard. The systems count different things. A child earning a strong PSLE grade is not automatically sent to G1 because the grade has the digit 1.
At Secondary 1, the pupil’s PSLE Score, Posting Group choices and eligible individual subject offers guide the starting academic profile. The school confirms the actual G level for Mathematics, English, Science and other subjects. Do not infer a subject’s difficulty from the similar spelling of AL1 and G1.
Do you know? Do you know? What are the PSLE Standard achievement bands?
MOE’s primary assessment system uses AL1 for 90% and above, AL2 for 85–89%, AL3 for 80–84%, AL4 for 75–79%, AL5 for 65–74%, AL6 for 45–64%, AL7 for 20–44% and AL8 for below 20%. These percentages are specifically the PSLE Standard scoring bands.
The values are not the SEC secondary grading boundaries and should not be used to estimate a teenager’s G3 national grade. Parents should treat primary and secondary results as evidence from different learning stages.
Do you know? Do you know? Is Foundation AL A the same as SEC G1 A?
No. Foundation AL A is an Achievement Level on a Primary 6 Foundation subject. SEC G1 grade A is a later national result awarded for a registered G1 subject at the secondary examination standard. These do not certify identical content or skills.
For PSLE Score calculations, Foundation AL A maps to the Standard AL6 value, Foundation B to AL7 and Foundation C to AL8. That is a specific PSLE mapping and has no authority to rewrite a G1 national examination grade.
Do you know? Do you know? Why does the PSLE Score use four subject numbers?
A pupil’s PSLE Score is computed by adding the Achievement Level values for English Language, Mathematics, Science and Mother Tongue, with applicable Foundation-level mapping. A pupil with AL3, AL4, AL5 and AL4 would have a PSLE Score of 16. A lower total is better within the PSLE scoring scheme.
The total, together with the relevant posting rules, supports Secondary 1 school allocation. It is not calculated by adding numbers from G1, G2 and G3, and does not continue as a permanent secondary-school subject grade.
Do you know? Do you know? Is Posting Group 2 the same as taking every subject at G2?
No. Posting Groups primarily facilitate admission and guide indicative initial academic standards. Under Full SBB, a pupil can offer different subjects at different General levels. A student admitted via Posting Group 2 may be assigned G3 Mathematics, G2 English and another subject at G1 where the school permits.
Parents should record Posting Group as admission information and each G level as a subject-specific academic fact. A one-word whole-stream label is especially misleading when the child has mixed levels.
Do you know? Do you know? Why can a Secondary 1 student take G3 without being in Secondary 3?
The 3 in G3 means General 3, the most demanding of the three mapped General subject standards. It is not the school year or a foreign Grade 3 label. A pupil in Secondary 1 can take G3 Mathematics, progress into Secondary 2 and remain at G3 if the school confirms the arrangement.
For school applications and learning resources, use the real year and academic standard together, such as ‘Secondary 2, G3 Mathematics’. That is more accurate than guessing from a digit alone.
Do you know? Do you know? Is SEC G2 grade 2 equal to PSLE AL2?
No. SEAB defines G2 SEC grades on a six-point secondary scale. PSLE AL2 is a Primary 6 Standard achievement band. The fact that both are labelled 2 does not indicate equivalent knowledge or a shared percentage range.
Parents can use each result to decide what learning support may be helpful at that stage, but should not add or subtract the numbers across examinations. The pupil’s actual syllabus and current work matter more than an unsupported historical comparison.
Do you know? Do you know? What are the 2027 SEC grade scales?
SEAB lists G1 grades A, B, C, D, E; G2 grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6; and G3 grades A1, A2, B3, B4, C5, C6, D7, E8, 9. The grading structures map from the former GCE N(T), N(A) and O-Level standards respectively, while Full SBB brings the national subjects under one SEC.
The correct SEC grade must be accompanied by the subject and General level. G2 grade 2 is a different type of result from G3 A2 and G1 B. Neither a family nor an outside tutor should invent one universal conversion scale.
Do you know? Do you know? Does one SEC show a mixture of G1, G2 and G3 results?
Yes. SEAB says the SEC issued to eligible candidates reflects the actual registered national examination subjects and their General levels on one certificate. The student may offer G3 Mathematics, G2 English and a G1 elective, where the school’s programme allows.
This is not a fictional overall ‘G2.5’ award. The receiving institution assesses the individual subject levels and grades under its actual prerequisites and admission calculation.
Do you know? Do you know? Can official SEC grade mapping change the grade printed on the certificate?
No. SEAB provides grade mapping for specific post-secondary aggregate calculations, for example mapping G3 A1–B3 to G2 grade 1, or G3 D7 to G2 grade 3 where the prescribed calculation requires it. The certificate still records what the candidate actually sat and earned at G3.
A mapped value is not a second examination attempt at G2, nor a licence to change the result on an official document. Follow the relevant 2028 admission rules for the intended pathway and do not assume the mapping works in reverse.
Do you know? Do you know? Is a G3 grade 9 the same as a PSLE AL8?
No. G3 grade 9 is the lowest result on SEAB’s G3 SEC grade structure, and PSLE AL8 is the lowest Primary 6 Standard achievement band. They arise from different national syllabuses and are not related by a percentage conversion.
The meaningful question is what the actual SEC result means for a selected post-secondary course and what educational support could help the student progress. Comparing the digits with an old PSLE result produces no reliable answer.
Do you know? Do you know? Does a lower PSLE Score always mean a lower G level?
No. A numerically lower PSLE Score indicates stronger primary performance. The Posting Group ranges and subject offers are designed to guide initial secondary programmes, and G3 is the most academically demanding General subject standard. The directions of the numbers differ because they measure different things.
For example, a pupil with PSLE Score 14 will typically have a Posting Group 3 option, not be assigned an imaginary G14. Use the MOE secondary posting table rather than trying to derive a G level from the score alone.
Do you know? Do you know? Does the old Express label tell us the SEC grade?
No. Under Full SBB, G3 is mapped to the earlier Express academic subject standard, but a pupil’s actual national grade depends on their assessed performance in the registered G3 subject. The historical course name is not an achievement grade.
The family should describe the student as studying a specific G3 subject and later report its actual SEC result. There is no need to revive whole-student stream labels when the modern record can describe mixed subject strengths accurately.
Four examples of grade confusion in Singapore families
A child with PSLE AL7 Mathematics who later improves in G1
A Primary 6 pupil had AL7 Standard Mathematics, reflecting performance in the specified PSLE band. The child enters Secondary 1 with a school-approved G1 Mathematics programme and develops stronger mathematical understanding over time. Their parent assumes AL7 will always describe the child’s ability, even after the pupil starts solving new questions confidently.
The family instead distinguishes the old PSLE outcome from the current subject. G1 is a secondary teaching standard; it does not represent a prediction of how the child will always perform. A G1 test result is school evidence, and an eventual SEC G1 national grade would be a different credential again. Growth is measured through independent understanding of new mathematical ideas, not comparison to an examination taken years earlier.
A pupil with strong PSLE Mathematics and mixed G3/G2 classes
Another pupil leaves primary school with strong Mathematics achievement, receives a place through a Posting Group and begins Secondary 1 studying G3 Mathematics but G2 Mother Tongue. A relative says this is impossible because a primary AL2 must become secondary G2 in every subject.
The school explains that the original PSLE subject grades, school offers and Full SBB arrangements govern the initial academic profile. The child can study Mathematics at a different level from language. The parent begins listing each subject separately and avoids representing the entire pupil as one unchanging numerical grade.
Two siblings compare ‘Grade 2’ and ‘AL2’
One sibling is in Primary 6 and receives AL2 English; another is a 2027 SEC candidate who eventually earns G2 English grade 2. The household initially calls these identical results. However, one is a primary PSLE AL band and the other a national secondary examination grade assessed at a different academic standard.
The family celebrates each achievement on its own terms and asks what the result means for the pupil’s next educational stage. They do not infer that the siblings had identical raw marks or equally demanding exams, and they avoid turning the matching digit into a ranking of intelligence.
A parent thinks G3 D7 means PSLE AL7 again
A teenager is preparing for a G3 national examination, and the parent notices the possible grade D7 on SEAB’s table. They remember PSLE AL7 as a band for much lower primary marks and worry that D7 is the same score repeating. The teacher clarifies that G3 is a secondary academic standard and D7 is a grade within the G3 exam scale.
The family looks at the actual SEC certificate rules and any relevant course prerequisites rather than assigning a guessed percentage from the PSLE. They plan suitable support for the student’s current syllabus and stop using an old Primary 6 grade as a proxy for a new national qualification.
More questions about primary ALs and secondary subject results
Do you know? Does PSLE AL6 convert to G2 grade 6?
No. PSLE AL6 is a primary Standard Achievement Level that corresponds to the 45–64% band in the current PSLE scoring framework. G2 grade 6 is part of a later secondary national examination grading scale. The values have different definitions and cannot be treated as equivalent.
A parent should use the child’s actual subject and year to interpret each result. Nothing in the shared numeral establishes that an AL6 student must study G2 or would score G2 grade 6 at SEC.
Do you know? If Foundation AL A maps to Standard AL6, does it also map to G2?
The Foundation A-to-Standard AL6 conversion is used to compute the primary PSLE Score. It does not directly determine the academic standard of every secondary subject, and it is not the same as SEAB’s later G2-to-G1 SEC grade mapping.
Look at the official Secondary 1 school offer and the applicable Full SBB criteria. Avoid carrying a primary scoring formula into an unrelated secondary national certificate.
Do you know? Is a PSLE Score of 7 the same as AL7?
No. A PSLE Score of 7 is the sum of four Achievement Level values and represents very strong overall primary performance; AL7 is the individual subject band for 20–44% at Standard level. The position of the digit does not make them the same quantity.
On the PSLE results slip, identify whether the number appears beside a subject or as the total PSLE Score. This distinction matters for Secondary 1 posting and for discussing what academic subjects may be offered at higher levels.
Do you know? What if the pupil is eligible for two Posting Groups?
MOE provides choices at specific PSLE Score boundaries, for example where a pupil may choose between Posting Groups 2 and 3 or Groups 1 and 2. The chosen Posting Group facilitates admission and guides indicative starting levels but does not itself become a national examination grade.
Families should understand the school’s learning pace, actual subject options and the child’s readiness before making the choice. A PG2 choice should not be described as a secondary G2 grade already earned.
Do you know? Why is G3 numerically higher but PSLE AL1 is stronger?
The labels measure different things. For primary subject results, AL1 denotes the strongest Achievement Level. For secondary curricula, G3 denotes the most demanding of the three General subject standards. There is no mathematical rule requiring unrelated naming systems to count in the same direction.
A simple family chart naming each column can prevent confusion: PSLE AL, PSLE Score, Posting Group, current subject G level and national examination grade. This makes education planning more precise than comparing digits alone.
Do you know? Do school weighted assessment percentages use PSLE AL bands?
Secondary schools set internal assessments according to their current curricula and reporting policies. Parents should not assume that a G3 weighted-assessment score of 76% is awarded PSLE AL4 because the PSLE uses 75–79 for AL4. Those primary bands were designed for a different national examination.
Read the school report’s actual grade legend and ask what the teacher’s feedback means. The student’s independent command of present concepts is more important than a guessed conversion to an old Primary 6 band.
Do you know? What if the child’s old PSLE result seems stronger than current G3 marks?
That can occur because the secondary syllabus is more advanced and the type of assessment has changed. A primary AL2 and a later school score at G3 measure different knowledge, and a lower percentage does not automatically prove a loss of ability or teaching quality.
Review the actual mistakes. Does the child struggle with a new prerequisite, worded applications, exam timing or simply unfamiliar concepts? Choose support that addresses the current problem rather than comparing percentages from unrelated exams.
Do you know? Do the SEC letter grades mean the same as school conduct grades?
No. SEC G1 A–E and G3 A1–9 are academic subject examination grades defined by SEAB. A school’s conduct, effort or character descriptors assess different kinds of behaviour and contribution. They do not have one universal numerical conversion to national examination results.
Keep separate records of academic achievements, school awards and CCA contributions. These can all matter to a student’s development without being treated as interchangeable grades.
Do you know? What about PSLE Higher Mother Tongue Distinction or Merit?
At PSLE, Higher Mother Tongue is reported using Distinction, Merit, Pass or Ungraded. These labels differ from Standard PSLE AL1–8 and from secondary G3 Higher Mother Tongue national examination grades. The same language subject family can use different reporting systems at different stages.
Read the specific examination year and syllabus when evaluating Higher Mother Tongue readiness. Avoid assuming a PSLE Distinction gives an automatic SEC A1 four years later.
Do you know? Does SEC G3 Grade 9 map to G2 for admission?
SEAB publishes a G3-to-G2 grade-mapping table for prescribed post-secondary aggregate calculations, and G3 grade 9 maps to G2 grade 5 in that context. That is a defined administrative calculation, not evidence the candidate studied the G2 syllabus or took its paper.
The original national result remains G3 grade 9. A parent must still check the destination course’s specific entry requirements and the current year rules; a mapped aggregate value alone does not guarantee the subject prerequisite is met.
Do you know? Could a G2 result be mapped to a higher G3 grade?
There is no official general reverse grade conversion that turns any G2 result into a G3 result. SEAB’s prescribed mapping is used when a more demanding subject grade needs to be expressed at a lower General level for defined admission calculations.
If the child needs G3 Mathematics for a particular qualification or pathway, the family should check the actual subject-level requirements rather than invent a G3 grade from a G2 result.
Do you know? Does a school-level 50% pass use the same scale as SEC grade 5?
No. Some school progression policies define a pass as at least 50% overall at any G level. SEC G2 grade 5 is a national examination result on its own grade scale. Both can be relevant to educational progression but have separate purposes and calculations.
Ask which rule is being discussed: promotion within secondary school, subject-level review, SEC certificate award or post-secondary admission. A single number cannot answer all four questions.
Do you know? Do SEC subject levels change the old PSLE result?
No. A pupil’s PSLE result remains the national primary qualification earned at the time. Later subject-level offers and school results reflect new learning, not retroactive editing of the original PSLE ALs or posting score.
Families should preserve authentic school documents and use the correct result for the right application. The student can grow into a more demanding subject without needing to rewrite history.
Do you know? Is G3 always better than a strong G2 result?
G3 has a more demanding syllabus, but whether it is the right educational choice depends on readiness, workload and the student’s learning needs. A strong G2 performance can be meaningful, while a pupil taking G3 may still need substantial academic support to reach a desired national grade.
The school can explain its subject-level offer process and the relevant post-secondary prerequisites. Parents should assess independent understanding and sustainable study rather than assuming the highest numbered curriculum is automatically optimal for every child.
Do you know? Can different G levels appear together with school performance comments?
Yes. A school report may identify the pupil’s current G levels, term results, conduct and co-curricular development. These are related observations about the student but represent different kinds of evidence. The official SEC certificate, issued later, records the national examination subjects and results.
Keep the different columns separate when discussing progress with teachers. An effort comment should not be converted into a mathematics grade, and a G-level label should not be confused with a performance mark.
Do you know? Does G3 A1 mean 90% and above like PSLE AL1?
No official SEC rule generally publishes the PSLE 90% band as the raw-score boundary for a G3 A1. SEAB states the G3 grade structure, but one cannot infer national grade boundaries simply by copying primary PSLE cut-offs.
A student’s G3 A1 is an official exam grade within a secondary syllabus. Parents should focus on demonstrated understanding, the syllabus and the actual result rather than promising an A1 for a particular mock-exam percentage.
Do you know? What if a relative calls G1 an old ‘Normal Technical stream’?
The G1 academic standard is mapped from the former Normal (Technical) standard, but Full SBB no longer defines each pupil by one permanent stream. A student may take G1 Science with G2 English, for example. The historical mapping explains continuity of academic demand, not a whole-person identity.
When communicating, specify the actual subject and level. This recognises differences in learning without turning an educational arrangement into a social label.
Do you know? How should parents compare children who took different national examination systems?
An older sibling may have a GCE O- or N-Level certificate from 2026, while a younger sibling graduating in 2027 has an SEC with G-levels. The newer certificate preserves mapped examination standards but uses a consolidated format and timetable.
Compare what each qualification actually records and the relevant admission conditions rather than decide that one set of letters must be superior. Celebrate the learner’s progress at their own education stage.
Do you know? What if a school application asks for the pupil’s ‘grade’?
Clarify whether it wants the school year, a national examination result or an academic subject level. An overseas form using Grade 9 often means the year of study, while Singapore G3 names a syllabus standard. The word grade may be doing several jobs in different countries.
If the form is unclear, submit the official school report and ask the receiving institution how it wants mixed-level subjects represented. Do not invent a numerical equivalence from the same digit.
A five-column family guide to result slips
- Write the PSLE subject Achievement Levels exactly as shown on the Primary 6 result.
- Keep the separate overall PSLE Score and chosen Posting Group.
- List current secondary academic subjects with their actual G1, G2 or G3 levels.
- Record school weighted assessments separately from national SEC results.
- For post-secondary applications, use the SEC subject grades and only the official grade mapping authorised for that pathway.

What to remember: PSLE AL is a primary achievement band, Posting Group describes an admission route, G1/G2/G3 describe individual secondary subject standards, and SEC grade describes a national result. Matching letters and digits do not make two separate qualifications equivalent. Accurate labels help families choose learning support and interpret future education opportunities.
At a parent–teacher meeting, show the actual assessment from the current school year and ask what the pupil can do independently. A Primary 6 AL band can explain a starting educational choice, but it cannot substitute for the teenager’s current work. Likewise, a G2 or G3 subject-level label helps identify appropriate learning demands without promising a future national result. When a family keeps the original examination year, full subject name and grading framework together, it becomes easier to understand improvements over time and make informed choices about the next school stage without confusing similar-looking numbers.
