Can the Range of a Data Set Be Zero? | Bukit Timah Maths Tuition Guide

Three students sit around open books and worksheets at a classroom table, reading, writing and discussing the work together.

Did you know? The range of a non-empty data set can be zero. This happens when the maximum and minimum are equal—which means every recorded value is the same.

For Bukit Timah students learning data handling, the key is to interpret the statistic: a zero range means no spread between the endpoints. It does not mean there are no observations, and it does not mean the values themselves are zero.

Try this now: find the range of 7, 7, 7. Maximum 7 minus minimum 7 gives 0. Then ask what must be true about every value whenever a non-empty data set has range zero.

1. Calculate the range correctly

For a non-empty numerical data set, the range is the maximum value minus the minimum value. It measures the distance between the two endpoints; it is not the number of data values and it is not “largest minus smallest adjacent gap”.

Data setMaximum − minimumRange
3, 5, 88 − 35
7, 7, 77 − 70
−4, 1, 66 − (−4)10
2.5, 2.5, 2.5, 2.52.5 − 2.50

Fast check: because the maximum cannot be smaller than the minimum, a range calculated as max − min can never be negative.

2. Interpret what zero means

A zero range means there is no spread between the endpoints: the maximum and minimum are the same. In a non-empty set, that can happen only when every recorded value is equal.

Original teaching illustration: three pupils each score 12 on a quiz. The data set is 12, 12, 12. There are three observations, so the set is not empty, but max = min = 12 and the range is 0.

Zero range does not mean “zero observations”, “zero total” or “zero mean”. For 12, 12, 12, the total is 36 and the mean is 12. The zero describes variation, not the size of the values.

Ask one precise follow-up

If the range is zero, what must be true about every value? A learner who answers “they are all equal” understands the statistic. A learner who says only “largest minus smallest” may still be repeating a procedure.

3. Handle one value and no values

A one-value data set has the same maximum and minimum. Under the usual school definition, its range is 0. For example, the range of {9} is 9 − 9 = 0.

An empty data set is different. It has no maximum and no minimum, so the ordinary max-minus-min range is undefined. Do not assign it 0 merely because no values appear.

SituationMaximum and minimum available?Range
5, 5, 5Yes; both are 50
9Yes; both are 90
No observationsNoUndefined in this definition

This boundary case is useful because it tests whether the child understands the objects used in the calculation, not merely the subtraction.

4. Diagnose a mistaken range

When a range answer is wrong, locate the first unstable choice instead of asking for the same subtraction again.

Student resultLikely issueRepair question

Range of 2, 9, 5 is 2The child chose the smallest value.Which two endpoints matter?

Range is −7The subtraction order was reversed. Can max be below min?
Empty set has range 0Absence of data was confused with equal data. What are the maximum and minimum?

Then change the surface form: use decimals, negative values or a frequency table. If the learner can still identify the endpoints and interpret the answer, the idea has transferred.

5. Use range as a checking and comparison tool

Range is quick, but it uses only two values. The sets 1, 5, 9 and 1, 1, 9 both have range 8 even though their internal patterns differ. A range comparison should therefore be described as an endpoint comparison, not a complete account of distribution.

Connect this with the mean: a data set can have zero range only when all values equal the same number, so the mean must equal that common value. By contrast, equal means do not force equal ranges.

For learners crossing into secondary statistics, tuition should move from calculation to interpretation: What does the statistic include? What does it ignore? What conclusion is justified? The diagnosis-first Secondary 1 Mathematics guide demonstrates that broader method.

Match the help to the student’s actual pathway

Current pathway note, checked 12 October 2026: Posting Groups 1, 2 and 3 support admission to secondary schools; they are not subject levels. Individual secondary subjects may be taken at G1, G2 or G3 according to the student’s programme and the subject available. See MOE’s Full Subject-Based Banding overview.

The Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate is introduced from 2027. A relevant syllabus depends on the subject, level, examination year and candidate type; not every subject is offered at every G level. Check the current SEAB SEC information and syllabus list before planning examination support.

For Primary 1–6 and PSLE learners, start with the child’s current school outcomes and actual work. Through the move to secondary school, the diagnosis remains specific: find the first unstable idea, repair it, and test whether the learner can explain and use it without prompting.

A calm next step for families

Bring one recent task, the student’s original attempt and any correction. In a verified 3-pax setting, a tutor can inspect the first unstable decision, ask the learner to explain it, and choose a fresh example that tests genuine transfer.
