How Should My Child Review a Listening Comprehension Mistake? | Bukit Timah Parent Guide

Three students sit around open books and worksheets at a classroom table, reading, writing and discussing the work together.

Did you know that a wrong listening-comprehension answer can begin with hearing the words, understanding the message or selecting the response? For Bukit Timah families, preserve the child’s first choice and ask what they thought the speaker said. That explanation helps the tutor identify which part needs teaching.

If practice audio is available and its use is permitted, review the relevant section with the tutor’s guidance. Compare the child’s interpretation with the spoken meaning before revealing or discussing the answer. A transcript may help during teaching where available, but understanding printed words does not demonstrate the same listening performance.

Record one specific difficulty, such as missing a corrected time, confusing the speaker’s intention or selecting an option for a familiar keyword. Then practise a fresh, suitable listening task under agreed conditions. Follow the actual school or examination instructions rather than assuming home replay conditions match an assessment.

SECTION 1 OF 5

Keep the original interpretation visible

Ask what the child heard and why they chose that answer. They may have noticed the main topic but missed the detail the question required. Record the uncertainty without prompting a new explanation that sounds more convincing.

Keep the full question and options where relevant. If authorised practice audio is unavailable, bring the task to the teacher or tutor rather than reconstructing a supposedly exact passage from memory.

SECTION 2 OF 5

Distinguish hearing from understanding

A child may not recognise a spoken word, may know the word but miss its meaning in context, or may understand the message yet answer a different question. Ask which part the review reveals.

If practice audio is unclear or too quiet, check the playback setup. When difficulties persist across listening situations, discuss the observed examples with the class teacher and agree appropriate support. Avoid diagnosing the cause from one score.

SECTION 3 OF 5

Follow corrections and qualifications

Consider an original spoken practice sentence: “We planned to meet at three, but the meeting will now begin at four.” If the question asks for the revised starting time, four is the relevant answer. Three describes the earlier plan.

Ask which words changed the meaning. Use a short permitted replay during teaching if helpful, then try a new example. Remembering that this particular answer is four does not show that the child can follow another correction.

SECTION 4 OF 5

Use a transcript for a clear teaching purpose

Where an authorised transcript is available, it can help clarify vocabulary or locate a qualification after listening. Tell the tutor when it was used. Separate this supported review from an audio-only independent attempt.

Avoid asking the child to write down every spoken word unless the task specifically requires it. Note-taking expectations vary. Confirm what the actual component asks the student to hear, understand and record.

SECTION 5 OF 5

Return to a fresh listening task

After teaching the missed distinction, try new audio chosen at an appropriate level. Use the agreed playback and response conditions, and note any additional help. Ask whether the same difficulty appears again.

The existing Bukit Timah PSLE and SEC listening guides provide deeper subject routes. Use SEAB’s directory for the relevant examination year when preparing formally. Bring the first choice, interpretation and support used to a consultation so the next step is specific.

Reviewed 10 October 2026. The examples are original teaching illustrations, and the home routines are suggestions to discuss with the teacher or tutor. Match practice to the student’s actual school coverage, task instructions and relevant examination-year materials.

Arrange a parent–student consultation after the starting position is clear. Bring the task, first attempt and the precise point where help was needed.
