Schools in Ang Mo Kio | Secondary School Choices After PSLE, IP and Full SBB

Three students in school uniforms work through open books at a classroom table, with textbooks and stationery nearby and study notes on the whiteboard behind them.

Which Ang Mo Kio secondary school should a P6 child choose after PSLE? Begin with the student’s PSLE Score, eligible Posting Group, actual programme interests and daily school journey. Ang Mo Kio’s 2026 planning-area education field includes six secondary sections: Anderson Secondary, Ang Mo Kio Secondary, CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls’ School (Secondary), Deyi Secondary, Mayflower Secondary and Presbyterian High School. Each has its own academic, co-curricular and school culture. Their names cannot by themselves guarantee admission, subject eligibility or future results.

Three distinctive routes show why school choice needs care. Anderson Secondary has a long-established Science Research Programme. Deyi Secondary connects English, media production and broadcast journalism. Ang Mo Kio Secondary develops environmental STEM and the integrated arts. CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls’ School is a special case: its secondary section offers both a route towards the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) and a Joint Integrated Programme (JIP) leading onwards to Eunoia Junior College. These are not interchangeable admission and examination paths.

In standard Secondary 1 posting, eligible students can list up to six ranked choices; actual school placement depends on score, eligibility, vacancies and the relevant tie-breakers. With Full Subject-Based Banding, students may offer individual subjects at G1, G2 or G3 according to the school’s arrangements and eligibility. The SEC begins in 2027 for relevant graduating cohorts. This guide explains what parents should compare, what must be verified directly and how to choose a school that a teenager can genuinely attend and grow within for the next four years.

SECTION 1 OF 6

Ang Mo Kio’s six secondary sections and a distinct JC location story

Back to contents

The estate’s six secondary school sections are Anderson, Ang Mo Kio, St. Nicholas Girls’, Deyi, Mayflower and Presbyterian High. This is a geography-based current-school list, not a ranking. Several well-known school names are nearby in northern and central Singapore, but proximity does not make them part of the same planning-area roster. Use MOE SchoolFinder to confirm current school addresses, programmes, subjects and posting information.

There is an important pre-university footnote. Anderson Serangoon Junior College is strongly associated with Ang Mo Kio but is temporarily operating from its former Serangoon Junior College campus during its campus rejuvenation, with return to Ang Mo Kio expected from 2028. A family planning a 2026 or 2027 JC journey should not assume that the future AMK campus address is already the working destination. School location changes can matter greatly when calculating travel and the actual student timetable.

School names also have different structures. CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls’ School includes both primary and secondary sections, and the secondary education offered through its JIP differs from its SEC pathway. Parents should confirm which programme their child is eligible for rather than use the single school name as proof that all subjects and admission processes are identical.

Start by asking what each school will actually teach the pupil, what the student would enjoy, and whether the home-to-gate journey is sustainable. A programme that fits the child’s interests can build confidence, but the ordinary language, mathematical, scientific and social foundations still need attention.

  • Check six current Ang Mo Kio secondary sections via MOE SchoolFinder.
  • Distinguish St Nicholas’ JIP and SEC pathways.
  • Treat ASRJC’s temporary Serangoon campus as a real location factor for current cohorts.
  • Do not infer admission eligibility from a school name or geography alone.
  • Compare school identity with the family’s actual weekday.

Anderson Secondary: scientific inquiry that tests explanations

Back to contents

Anderson Secondary’s Science Research Programme has historical depth. The school describes its Science Research and Innovation niche beginning in 2000 and its level-wide Secondary 2 Science Research Project being incorporated from 2005. That history shows a school working to give scientific reasoning a repeated place in the curriculum, not merely organising a single showcase.

A good research project begins with a question and an honest method. Students need to decide what can be observed or measured, what other variables matter and which conclusions the evidence supports. This differs from collecting a set of impressive facts about a scientific topic. A pupil can build real understanding by explaining why an initial hypothesis was unsupported and what they learned from the investigation.

Parents considering Anderson can ask which activities are whole-cohort, what pupils do in Secondary 1 before the Secondary 2 project, and what additional opportunities depend on selection, aptitude or particular student interests. Not every national research competition described on a school site will automatically be part of every child’s timetable. The question is how ordinary students receive good teaching and feedback.

The research direction may appeal to a student who enjoys Science and mathematics, but it also requires reading, writing, critical interpretation and sometimes teamwork. A learner who is less confident in written explanations may still be able to grow through a structured sequence. School fit lies in the balance between worthwhile challenge and the support needed to participate.

  • Explore the current Science Research Programme and lower-secondary progression.
  • Ask how projects are assessed and supported.
  • Distinguish compulsory cohort research from selected research teams.
  • Connect experimentation with evidence-based writing and mathematical analysis.
  • Check teacher feedback and student support, not only past awards.

Deyi and Ang Mo Kio Secondary: media, environmental STEM and the arts

Back to contents

Deyi Secondary’s Active Voice Broadcast Journalism ALP offers a distinctive route into communication and digital literacy. Its three-tier approach includes a broad Tier 1 where students learn media-production basics and perspective-taking, a Tier 2 connected with the Young Journalists’ Club CCA, and advanced specialist opportunities under Tier 3. The school’s 2026 page describes storyboarding, filming, audio, editing, subtitles and other tools as parts of the learning process.

Media-making can be educationally powerful when the pupil must verify what a story claims and think about the audience. A polished film can still contain weak reasoning or an unsupported conclusion. A student developing real media literacy learns to distinguish what was observed, what was edited and what evidence is needed. English comprehension, narrative structure, digital citizenship and respectful communication become one practical project.

Ang Mo Kio Secondary’s 2026 school experience programme names a STEM ALP exploring biodiversity, energy and coding and a Learning for Life programme using integrated visual and performing arts. These are different from broadcast journalism, even though both require students to make, explain and reflect. Parents should examine which experiences are class-wide and which belong to CCAs or enrichment.

Some pupils enjoy practical scientific problems; others feel most alive discussing a story, composing music, performing drama or learning how video communicates. These interests deserve respect, but they are not reasons to overlook compulsory subject levels, current school culture or travel. A good school gives an interest room to develop while helping the child do the harder ordinary work of secondary education.

  • Deyi: broad broadcast-journalism foundation and separate selected extension.
  • Ang Mo Kio Secondary: environmental STEM and integrated arts.
  • Ask how students check sources, correct errors and revise creative work.
  • Distinguish ALP learning from later CCA or DSA participation.
  • Compare academic support and everyday classroom experience alongside distinctive programmes.

SECTION 4 OF 6

St Nicholas Girls: understand JIP and SEC before choosing

Back to contents

CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls’ School (Secondary) requires particularly precise language. Its 2026 Direct School Admission information for AY2027 identifies both a four-year SEC Programme (SP) and a Joint Integrated Programme (JIP) for eligible students. The JIP is offered in partnership with Eunoia Junior College: pupils spend the first four years at St. Nicholas and then progress to Eunoia JC to complete the programme towards the A-Level examinations.

The difference is not simply one programme sounding more advanced. The JIP follows a six-year integrated academic route that does not require the ordinary Secondary 4 SEC qualification as the key exit examination. The SEC Programme follows the applicable secondary curriculum and national examination arrangements. Each requires the correct admissions and subject eligibility; the school’s current instructions should be consulted rather than assuming one application automatically covers both routes.

Some families may have a daughter who enjoys a bilingual and academically challenging environment, yet that alone does not establish which pathway is appropriate. Consider her readiness for independent study, interest in the programme, ability to sustain the workload and longer-term plans. At the same time, no 12-year-old needs a fixed university career to be allowed to explore a school meaningfully.

For current cohorts, verify DSA commitment conditions, school posting, any SAP language-related criteria, tuition or miscellaneous fee differences where applicable, and actual transport. The St. Nicholas Music Elective Programme guide explores another relevant student-interest dimension, but music involvement does not itself guarantee JIP admission.

  • Check whether the child is applying for SP or JIP.
  • JIP partner: Eunoia Junior College for years five and six.
  • Confirm current criteria, DSA commitments and programme offers.
  • Distinguish national SEC examination from integrated A-Level progression.
  • Prioritise a manageable academic and personal fit over status.

Full SBB, six school choices and the 2027 SEC transition

Back to contents

Since the 2024 entering cohort, Full Subject-Based Banding has used Posting Groups for mainstream secondary admissions, while students may study subjects at G1, G2 or G3 under eligibility and school arrangements. A student might be ready for a more demanding English subject but need a stronger Mathematics foundation, or vice versa. The Posting Group is an admissions mechanism, not a complete permanent map of academic capabilities.

MOE’s Secondary 1 Posting guidance enables students to rank eligible school choices. When applicants with equal scores compete for the last available places, the relevant tie-breakers include citizenship, choice order and computerised balloting. Previous-year cut-off points describe historical outcomes; they cannot guarantee the present cohort’s results.

From 2027, the Singapore-Cambridge SEC consolidates relevant G1, G2 and G3 examinations under a common certification. MOE’s 2026 announcements also describe a revised Post-Secondary Admissions Exercise from 2028. Students entering Secondary 1 today will belong to their own future graduating cohort, so parents should check the syllabus and onward-admission requirements for the actual year rather than use a historical O-Level guide without adjustment.

The school’s available subject combinations still matter. An upper-secondary elective such as Additional Mathematics, computing, music or pure sciences can depend on staffing, timetabling, eligibility and student readiness. A subject existing in Singapore does not mean that every Ang Mo Kio school offers it for every pupil. Ask the secondary school for current subject choices and what happens when a pupil’s strengths grow or learning needs change.

  • Use six ranked choices where appropriate under MOE’s S1 process.
  • Remember that cut-offs are historical and balloting can occur.
  • Separate Posting Groups from individual G1/G2/G3 subject levels.
  • Plan using the correct SEC examination year.
  • Verify school-specific subject-combination and progression rules.

Choose a school the teenager can belong to and learn within

Back to contents

A successful posting is a beginning. The teenager must still travel each day, understand a new timetable, make friends, learn the difference between secondary school subjects, attend CCAs and manage homework. A programme that looks wonderful on a school webpage can become burdensome if the student’s route is exhausting or the academic level does not match their current preparation.

Ang Mo Kio is geographically layered around Ang Mo Kio MRT, Yio Chu Kang, Mayflower, Teck Ghee and neighbouring residential precincts. The correct journey for a particular school may involve a bus, the North–South or Thomson–East Coast Lines and a final walk. Check the school’s actual gate, not an estate name, and consider the return after CCA as well as morning travel.

At eduKate, we frame learning continuity as keeping prerequisite concepts and their connections strong across the curriculum. A student who can calculate with negative numbers should later apply them to algebra. A child who understands a Science experiment should be able to explain a new investigation. A learner who can retell a text should gradually be able to infer and justify. When one of these connections fails, diagnose it rather than automatically adding hours of tuition.

Small-group three-student tutorials can help repair precise weaknesses where appropriate. But a family should not buy additional lessons simply to recreate a school reputation or to promise DSA success. Talk with the student, inspect actual work and ask the school about its teaching and wellbeing support. The best school choice creates room for academic progress, friendship, activity and the confidence to become a capable young adult.

  • Compare real school journey and CCA schedule.
  • Talk with the pupil about genuine interests and concerns.
  • Identify possible academic prerequisite gaps before the move.
  • Check official subject and support arrangements.
  • Keep friendships, sleep, movement and family time in the plan.
