A notebook with unused pages can raise a small but useful question: do we need another notebook, or can this one do the job? A thoughtful answer starts with the actual task, not simply with the label new or reused.
For families exploring schools in Yishun, sustainability learning offers a connection between knowledge, everyday choices and explaining a decision. Huamin Primary’s published Applied Learning Programme provides the local context.
This guide uses an invented notebook example. It is an independent family discussion, not an official school task, a product recommendation or a calculation of environmental impact.

CHAPTER 1 OF 4
1. Read the school’s sustainability context
Huamin Primary’s Applied Learning Programme page describes interdisciplinary Education for Sustainable Development. Its 2026 examples include Primary 4 food-resilience learning and Primary 5 peer-led sustainability education.
That gives families a useful discussion point: can a learner connect a sustainability idea with the practical needs of a situation and explain what information is still missing?
The notebook exercise below is not one of the school’s described projects. Check current programme details directly with the school rather than assuming identical activities or participation for every pupil.
CHAPTER 2 OF 4
2. Define the job before comparing options
Imagine a student needs ten blank pages for a private practice journal. One existing notebook has thirty unused pages, and another option is to obtain a new notebook.
Start with the requirements: enough blank pages, a usable binding and a place to write comfortably. A decorative cover might be enjoyable, but it is not the same as a requirement for this task.
If considering a real notebook, obtain its owner’s permission. Do not read or share someone else’s notes, and keep private information out of the exercise.
The arithmetic is straightforward: thirty unused pages are enough for a ten-page task. That answers a capacity question; it does not yet answer every question about suitability.
CHAPTER 3 OF 4
3. Check the practical conditions
Ask whether the notebook is still needed for another purpose, whether the pages are suitable and whether any school instruction requires a particular format.
If the existing notebook meets the task’s requirements, using its remaining pages is a workable option without obtaining another notebook for this particular activity.
If it does not meet an important requirement, identify that requirement specifically. “We need detachable pages” gives more useful information than “Old notebooks are bad.”
Do not equate a decision with someone’s character. A family may have constraints the learner cannot see. The discussion should help clarify choices, not shame a child or parent for owning something new.
CHAPTER 4 OF 4
4. State the decision without exaggerating its impact
A careful conclusion might be “For this ten-page practice task, we can use the notebook we already have because it has enough suitable pages.” It names the situation and the reason.
That does not prove how much carbon, water or energy the choice saves. Such claims would require relevant data about production, use and disposal, which this exercise has not supplied.
Ask one follow-up question: what information would change the decision? A different page requirement, damaged binding or another planned use could matter.
Finish with a small, practical action agreed by the family. Sustainability discussion becomes more useful when a learner can distinguish a reasonable local choice from a much larger claim that the available evidence cannot support.
