Should you choose a primary school near home in Singapore? A nearby MOE school deserves serious consideration when it meets your child’s learning needs and makes the family’s routine manageable. Compare actual programmes and support, but include travel, collection and after-school care in the decision. A shorter journey can leave more room in your plan for meals, rest, reading and play.
Did you know? The distance used for P1 registration and the time spent travelling are different measurements. MOE uses an official home-school distance category; your child experiences walking, waiting, transfers and weather. Check both, and use the registration rules for the correct exercise: announced Phase 2C changes begin with the 2027 exercise for P1 entry in 2028.
Here is the immediate decision test: choose the farther school only when you can explain the confirmed benefit your child would use and the extra journey is sustainable. If its attraction depends on an uncertain programme place or unconfirmed student care, investigate first. The guide below helps you compare the two schools without turning a familiar name into the entire answer.

Draw a normal weekday from waking up to bedtime. Include breakfast, travel, lessons, collection, care, dinner and getting ready for the next morning. The exercise makes the time commitment visible without assuming every child has the same needs.
Try both journeys at the time your family would use them. Record door-to-door travel, transfers and the adult’s responsibilities. Include the return journey after an activity, not only the trip to the school gate.
Consider an illustrative comparison: one school takes 15 minutes each way, another takes 45. Over five school days, the difference is five hours of travel. That arithmetic does not decide the school choice, but it identifies a real commitment to discuss.
Ask what would occupy those hours if they were available. A family might value a calmer meal, time for an activity or a less rushed collection arrangement. Keep the answer specific to your own week rather than treating proximity as a universal rule.
A more distant school can deserve attention when it has relevant, accessible provision that your child would actually benefit from. Describe the benefit concretely: a particular learning arrangement, a programme with verified participation rules or support that meets a specific need.
Ask whether the opportunity is part of ordinary classroom provision, a selected activity or an option that begins later. A child interested in art may enjoy regular making and discussion; an impressive competition record does not establish what that child can participate in.
Check an alternative at the nearby school too. If a similar learning experience is accessible locally, the travel trade-off may look different. If it is not, you have a clearer reason to investigate the farther option.
Use the counterfactual question: if the most attractive optional activity were unavailable, would we still want this school? A positive answer based on its ordinary teaching and support gives the preference a firmer foundation.
MOE’s address guidance directs families to confirm their official distance category using OneMap School Query. A driving distance or a quick map estimate should not replace this check.
Home-school distance can affect priority under applicable registration rules, but proximity does not guarantee a place. Check citizenship category, phase eligibility and the conditions for the relevant exercise.
The announced framework changes apply from the 2027 registration exercise, for children starting P1 in 2028. Most schools reserve 60 Phase 2C places, while smaller-intake schools retain 40. At 12 specified schools, Phase 2C has separate tracks for applicants living within 2km and beyond 2km, with no distance priority within each track.
That distinction matters when you encounter an older claim that living closer always produces a Phase 2C advantage. Read the current official school list and framework before drawing a conclusion. Daily convenience and registration priority remain separate questions.
Confirm who collects your child on each weekday and what happens when that person is unavailable. A plan that relies on one adult always finishing work on time deserves a backup arrangement.
Ask about care places, hours, application timing, fees and collection rules. The existence of a school-based centre is useful information; it does not confirm a place for your child.
Include siblings and other family commitments. A slightly longer journey may work well when it connects naturally with a caregiver’s route. The closest school on a map may be less convenient than a school whose daily arrangements fit the whole household.
Write the confirmed arrangement beside each school. Mark a hoped-for care place as uncertain and identify whom to ask. This makes the choice easier to discuss calmly.
Turn reputation into a question you can answer. If someone calls a school nurturing, ask how pupils request help. If they call it strong in Science, ask what children actually do and who participates.
Read a relevant school profile, then check current official provision. The Horizon Primary School guide and Hougang Primary School guide are examples of the existing library, not a ranking or a recommendation for every postcode.
Invite your child to describe what they noticed during a visit. A young child’s answer does not replace adult checks, but it can reveal what made them comfortable, curious or uncertain.
A useful reason sounds like this: the school meets these learning needs, we have confirmed this arrangement, and the journey fits our week. A famous name can be part of the conversation without becoming its conclusion.
Complete the comparison below for one nearby and one farther school. Keep essential conditions separate from preferences. An appealing activity cannot compensate for an arrangement your family cannot use.

| Factor | Nearby school | Farther school |
|---|---|---|
| Travel | Record tested weekday time | Record tested weekday time |

| Collection and care | Confirmed plan and backup | Confirmed plan and backup |

Is the nearest primary school always the best? Compare learning needs, access and family arrangements. Proximity is a valuable practical factor, not a complete judgement.
Will being within 1km guarantee admission? No. Use the applicable phase and balloting rules, including the changes for the 2027 exercise.
Should we move home for a school? Assess housing and family consequences separately, verify the applicable address conditions with MOE and do not assume a move guarantees admission.
What can we check tomorrow? Test one journey and ask one specific question about care or learning provision.
