Should I Take H2 Economics in JC?

Three students sit around open books and worksheets at a classroom table, reading, writing and discussing the work together.

Take H2 Economics if you want to explain how people, firms and governments make choices, and you are willing to practise analysis and written argument. Check your JC’s combination rules and your possible university prerequisites first. Choose it because the actual work appeals to you, rather than because friends describe it as a convenient contrasting subject.

Did you know? H2 Economics includes both case-study and essay assessment in the current CJC overview. That means you need to interpret information, apply concepts and develop a reasoned answer. Interest in news helps, but recognising a headline is only the beginning.

Before deciding, read a short topic introduction, inspect a sample question and ask a teacher how students build answers. Compare H1 and H2 in the context of your entire combination. A smaller syllabus does not remove the need for careful thinking.

Guidance checked on 10 October 2026. Confirm arrangements and requirements with the school or university for your child’s intake, admission cohort and examination year.

PART 1 OF 4

Discover what economic reasoning feels like

Back to contents

Consider why a business changes its price. You might start with customer demand, then ask about costs, competitors and the effect on revenue. Economics gives you concepts for organising those possibilities and deciding which explanation fits.

The subject moves between individual markets and the wider economy. A student may enjoy connecting an everyday purchase to larger questions about employment, growth or public policy. The attraction should include investigating causes, not simply following business stories.

Try explaining one issue in a few linked sentences: what changed, why it matters, who is affected and what might limit your conclusion. This informal exercise reveals whether you enjoy building a chain of reasoning.

PART 2 OF 4

Expect reading, diagrams and argument

Back to contents

Jurong Pioneer JC’s assessment guidance includes interpreting economic information in textual, numerical and graphical forms. You need to notice what a source actually shows and avoid making a claim that the evidence cannot support.

A diagram becomes useful when you explain its assumptions and connect it to the question. Similarly, a definition helps only when you apply it correctly. Treat these tools as parts of an explanation rather than items to insert mechanically.

Essay practice involves selecting relevant ideas, developing analysis and making a justified judgement. Ask the department for sample work or introductory materials so you can see the difference between describing a topic and answering a question about it.

PART 3 OF 4

Compare H1 and H2 carefully

Back to contents

CJC’s current overview describes wider H2 coverage and an essay paper alongside case studies, while H1 uses case-study assessment. It also notes that both levels demand rigorous writing and thinking. Check the syllabus for your examination year.

Think about the subjects that already occupy your week. A student taking several substantial written subjects should consider reading and revision time; a student taking mostly mathematical subjects should still plan regular writing practice.

University requirements deserve their own check. Do not assume H2 Economics replaces a required mathematics subject or is universally required for an economics-related degree. Use the JC subject-combination guide to review the whole set.

PART 4 OF 4

Make the decision with a realistic trial

Back to contents

Read a brief explanation of demand and supply, then examine an accessible case-study extract. Identify the information you understand, the unfamiliar vocabulary and the point where you need help. Starting with questions is a normal way to explore a new subject.

Ask the JC about available combinations, introductory support and how feedback works. Confirm any school-specific entry conditions directly. Avoid turning somebody else’s experience of the subject into a prediction of your grade.

The eduKateSG Careers by Subject hub can broaden your exploration. A good reason to choose H2 Economics is that you want to practise its way of thinking and can make room for the work alongside your other commitments.
