Should I Take H2 English Language and Linguistics in JC?

Three students sit around open books and worksheets at a classroom table, reading, writing and discussing the work together.

Did you know? H2 English Language and Linguistics, often called ELL, is about studying how language works in context, not simply becoming a more fluent English speaker. Consider it if you enjoy investigating how wording creates meaning and why people use language differently.

Catholic Junior College describes ELL through the discipline of linguistics and contemporary language issues. Its published questions include how speakers and writers choose language for different contexts. This gives you a concrete starting point for exploring the subject.

Before choosing, check the college’s current selection requirements, syllabus and available combinations. Strong English results can be useful evidence, but the decision should also consider interest in analysis and the demands of the full timetable.

Reviewed 11 October 2026. Confirm current requirements, available options and application arrangements with the relevant school or university.

PART 1 OF 4

Explore the difference from other English subjects

Back to contents

Ask an ELL teacher for a representative text-analysis task. Notice whether you enjoy examining language choices and connecting them to the situation, speaker or audience rather than only identifying the topic.

Keep ELL distinct from General Paper and Literature. Ask how each subject’s questions and assessment differ, especially if your proposed combination includes more than one of them.

Do not choose ELL solely to repair basic writing difficulties. Discuss those needs with a teacher while investigating whether the subject’s analytical approach is something you genuinely want to study.

PART 2 OF 4

Check your habits of analysis

Back to contents

Take a short text and explain a particular wording choice using evidence from the text. Can you identify the feature accurately and explain its possible effect without relying on a vague impression?

Ask a teacher how you handle unfamiliar terminology and sustained written explanations. You do not need to know the course already, but you should understand where preparation would help.

Consider whether you enjoy checking your first interpretation against another example. A confident opinion becomes more useful when you can explain its basis and acknowledge where the evidence does not support it.

PART 3 OF 4

Confirm the college’s conditions

Back to contents

CJC’s current programme page says applicants are considered through a written selection test after admission and publishes an indicative English Language grade cut-off. Check the current details directly rather than treating this as a rule for every college.

Ask which combinations include ELL and whether participation in an elective programme brings additional commitments. Subject availability and programme conditions should be confirmed for your intended intake.

If a university course interests you, check its prerequisites separately. ELL may provide relevant experience for several fields, but do not assume it is required for a particular degree or guarantees an admission advantage.

PART 4 OF 4

Choose with a realistic weekly routine

Back to contents

Ask how reading, discussion and written analysis are paced through the year. Compare that work with the demands of your other subjects and the time needed to review feedback.

Plan practice that includes explaining a feature precisely and revising an incomplete argument. Collecting interesting examples can support curiosity, but should connect to the methods your teacher is developing. Ask which recurring mistakes matter most so practice addresses a clear need.

Decide using the sample work, teacher feedback and your full combination. Our JC subject-combination guide helps you weigh the wider plan. Choose ELL when the questions and learning process fit your interests, then review your routine early.
