Should I Take H2 Theatre Studies and Drama in JC?

Three students sit around open books and worksheets at a classroom table, reading, writing and discussing the work together.

Did you know? H2 Theatre Studies and Drama involves studying how theatre works as well as developing practical skills. Enjoying a performance is a useful starting point, but choosing the subject also means considering reading, analysis and sustained practice.

Tampines Meridian Junior College describes practical workshops alongside seminar-style lessons and discussions. Its published subject-combination information requires prospective H2 TSD students to sit a diagnostic assessment. These are college-specific arrangements to check for your intake.

Before choosing, ask for examples of both the practical and academic work. Consider whether you enjoy experimenting, explaining a creative decision and responding to feedback, then check how the subject fits the rest of your combination.

Reviewed 11 October 2026. Confirm current requirements, available options and application arrangements with the relevant school or university.

PART 1 OF 4

Understand the study behind performance

Back to contents

Ask a teacher to explain what students do with a dramatic text or theatrical idea. How do they investigate its meaning, try an interpretation and discuss the result? A concrete example makes the subject easier to picture.

TMJC describes a learning environment combining practical workshops with discussion and reading. Treat its masterclasses and learning journeys as school examples rather than a promise that every college offers identical experiences.

Compare TSD with Literature and a drama CCA if those also interest you. Shared texts or performance activities do not make their purposes and assessments interchangeable. Ask about the actual tasks before deciding which route suits you.

PART 2 OF 4

Explore readiness to practise and reflect

Back to contents

Try a short activity recommended by the department. Notice whether you enjoy revisiting a choice after feedback. You do not need an immediately polished result to discover an interest in the process.

Discuss collaboration and reliability. Ask how students organise practical work and what preparation is expected between lessons. Being comfortable on stage is one useful quality; contributing consistently to shared work matters too.

Ask how teachers support students in explaining their decisions. If written analysis feels less familiar than performance, identify that clearly. Understanding the area you need to develop is more useful than labelling the entire subject easy or difficult.

PART 3 OF 4

Confirm college and examination arrangements

Back to contents

Check whether your intended college offers TSD in a feasible combination. Confirm current prerequisites and selection requirements directly. TMJC’s diagnostic assessment is an example, not a universal rule for all colleges.

Use the official syllabus for your examination year to understand the assessed components. Ask the department to explain how practical and written preparation are organised. Older student accounts may describe different requirements.

Clarify rehearsal schedules, facilities access, learning journeys and any relevant costs. Ask how students handle competing deadlines. A timetable listing alone may not show the full commitment around practical preparation.

PART 4 OF 4

Choose with the full pathway in view

Back to contents

Compare the subject alongside your other H2 choices, compulsory work and activities. Plan where reading, revision and practical preparation will fit during a busy week. Interest works best with a sustainable routine.

Check university prerequisites separately if you have a course in mind. Taking TSD does not guarantee admission to an arts programme or substitute for another required subject. You can explore theatre while keeping broader plans under review.

Use the JC subject-combination guide to bring the decision together. Choose when the actual work interests you, the college confirms eligibility and the complete combination supports your intended options.
