Start here: name the decision before collecting evidence
The Swedish Board of Student Finance, CSN, checks previous study results when a learner applies for new student finance. For university and university-college study, one full-time week corresponds to 1.5 higher-education credits. The ordinary result requirement is 62.5% during the first 40 full-time weeks with student finance and 75% after that, with CSN rounding the required result down to the nearest whole credit.
The practical answer is to calculate from the weeks and study rate actually financed, not from a whole programme’s headline credits. If the learner is short, later passed credits can repair the result. Passing within four weeks after the new study period starts may allow support from the period’s start; later repair normally moves the earliest support to the week after the requirement is met.
This guide was checked on 25 October 2026 against CSN pages updated in February and March 2026. CSN decides the individual record and may consider documented special reasons.
This specialist sits under The Gold Standard of Education: Learning That Transfers into Life. The parent framework keeps the purpose visible: understand the system, act on the correct evidence and build independence for the next decision.

1. Separate university credits, funded weeks and new finance
A transcript records completed credits. A CSN decision records the weeks, rate and support awarded. A new application triggers the result check. The requirement is built from the funded study period, not from a general impression of academic progress.
The broader Education in Sweden guide explains gymnasium and higher education. This specialist owns the result gate for continued CSN study finance.
Collect the previous CSN decisions and current transcript before calculating. Missing one part-time period can change the full-time-week total.
Decision rehearsal and changed-context transfer
Turn this chapter into a live case. The student states the present decision, the institution or CSN supplies the evidence it owns, and the results and finance record records the result. Date every fact and label estimates, pending evidence and final decisions differently.
Now change one condition: the programme changes. Preserve every unaffected fact and reopen only the downstream steps that depend on it. Name the new document, calculation, deadline or contact required. This checks understanding of the mechanism rather than memory of one example.
Run a boundary check: write what the evidence proves, what it does not prove and which authority can make the next decision. Replace one number or category and repeat the reasoning. If the conclusion changes without a cited rule, an assumption has entered the record.
Finish with a five-line handover: current state, controlling source, unresolved question, next permitted action and review date. Someone unfamiliar with the case should be able to reconstruct it without oral explanation.
2. Convert study rate into full-time weeks
At university level, one full-time week equals 1.5 högskolepoäng. Forty weeks of full-time finance therefore correspond to a 60-credit study base. Forty weeks at 50% correspond to 20 full-time weeks and a 30-credit base.
Part-time study preserves the lower first-40-week requirement across a longer calendar period because CSN converts it into full-time equivalents. Calendar duration and finance duration are not interchangeable.
Write weeks, percentage of full time and resulting credit base in separate columns. Then apply the correct result percentage.

3. Use 62.5% for the first 40 full-time weeks
During the first 40 full-time-equivalent weeks with student finance, the ordinary university result requirement is 62.5%. CSN rounds the required number down to the nearest whole credit.
For a 60-credit base, 62.5% is 37.5 and CSN’s official example uses 37 credits after downward rounding. The half credit is not rounded up.
The result period can be shorter than 40 weeks. Calculate only the financed base that CSN assesses.

4. Move to 75% after the first 40 weeks
After the first 40 full-time-equivalent weeks, the ordinary result requirement becomes 75%. For 60 financed credits, the requirement is 45 passed credits.
Do not average the first and later percentages across a student’s entire history. Identify which financed weeks belong to which band. CSN’s decision is the safest source where the boundary falls within a period.
Some programmes have different rules. CSN’s page specifically notes a 100% requirement for the police programme; use the applicable programme category.

Finish with a five-line handover: current state, controlling source, unresolved question, next permitted action and review date. Someone unfamiliar with the case should be able to reconstruct it without oral explanation.
5. Distinguish passed credits from registration
Registration, participation and submitted work do not become passed higher-education credits until the institution records the result. CSN can wait for later reporting, but the learner should not count an expected grade as completed.
A course can contain several modules with staggered reporting. Match the transcript’s result date and credits to the CSN period. Ask the institution to correct a genuine reporting error rather than sending a self-made result.
If study abroad is involved, the learner may need to supply evidence personally because automatic Swedish reporting may not cover the result.

6. Work a first-year and later-year example
Amir has 40 weeks of full-time finance covering 60 credits in his first financed year. He passes 37 credits. Because the 62.5% result is rounded down from 37.5, the official example shows 37 as sufficient.
Later, after the first 40 full-time weeks, Sofia has finance for another 60-credit year and must ordinarily pass 45 credits. If she passes 42, she is three credits short for the next application unless special reasons are accepted.
These examples explain the formula. CSN still decides the actual period, study rate, programme category and counted results.

7. Repair missing results within four weeks
If results are insufficient when a new application is assessed, CSN can wait for more results. When the learner meets the requirement within four weeks after the new study period starts, support may be granted retrospectively from the start of that period.
If the requirement is met after those four weeks, the earliest new support is normally the week after sufficient results are achieved. The academic recovery and cash-flow consequence therefore have different dates.
Record the new period’s start, result posting date, application status and revised decision. Do not promise backdating without the official timeline.

8. Use study in another subject to repair results
CSN states that missing results can be made up through other study and do not necessarily have to be in the same subject or education form. The learner must still achieve the required amount and have it properly reported.
A route change can therefore repair finance eligibility, but it should also make educational sense. Passing an unrelated course only for points may spend time without progressing the intended qualification.
Use the transcript and CSN letter to identify the exact missing amount. Then choose a credible course with a realistic completion and reporting date.

9. Present special reasons with evidence
CSN may consider special reasons such as illness when they explain insufficient results. The learner must describe the reason, dates and connection to study performance and submit relevant documentation.
A difficult circumstance is not strengthened by exaggeration. A clear chronology, medical or official evidence where appropriate, affected courses and recovery actions make the decision reproducible.
Special reasons do not erase the transcript. They allow CSN to decide whether the ordinary result requirement should be applied differently in the documented case.

10. Keep already paid support and future eligibility separate
CSN explains that insufficient results do not by themselves force repayment of support already approved, provided the learner was registered for and studied all courses financed. Loans remain repayable under their ordinary terms.
A study interruption, reduced rate or unregistered course is a different change and must be reported. Result shortage and incorrect payment are not the same issue.
Use one row for past award validity and another for the new application. This prevents fear about future support from becoming an inaccurate repayment claim.

11. Diagnose the common CSN calculation failures
Failure one is counting calendar weeks rather than full-time equivalents. Failure two is applying 62.5% forever. Failure three is rounding 37.5 up. Failure four is counting registered rather than passed credits.
Failure five is ignoring a programme-specific rule. Failure six is assuming every late result is backdated. Failure seven is confusing insufficient results with automatic repayment. Failure eight is leaving study abroad evidence unsent.
Repair with a ledger: CSN decision, weeks, rate, base credits, percentage band, rounded requirement, passed credits, shortfall, result date and next decision.

12. Use CSN’s current pages and related owners
Start with CSN’s study-results page and its insufficient-results repair page.
Use the Swedish admission selection guide for merit groups and the reell kompetens guide for course eligibility evidence. Admission and CSN finance remain separate.
Finish with the learner’s current CSN letter and official transcript. A website formula helps; the personal decision identifies the exact amount still required.

Extended practice and handover
Recalculate a 50% study rate over 40 calendar weeks. It becomes 20 full-time weeks and a 30-credit base. Apply 62.5% and round down only after the multiplication.
Build a transcript map with course, module, credits, result and reporting date. A missing grade can be an academic problem or an administrative delay; the remedies differ.
When the first-40-week boundary falls mid-year, ask CSN which result band applies to each assessed period. Do not average 62.5 and 75 into a home-made percentage.
Model a three-credit shortfall and two repair courses. Compare likely completion and reporting dates, educational usefulness and effect on the four-week finance window.
If studying abroad, request an official transcript early. Translation and institutional confirmation can take longer than the result itself.
For illness evidence, write the dates and affected course tasks before drafting the explanation. Precision makes the causal link easier to assess.
Separate the fear of repayment from the actual rule. Confirm registration and study activity for the paid period, then deal with future eligibility independently.
A learner changing from university to Komvux can repair results under CSN’s general statement, but should verify how the new results are measured and reported.
Parents can help with cash-flow planning during a delayed decision. They should not promise retrospective payment or conceal a study interruption.
Use the institution’s study counsellor to build a feasible recovery plan, then use CSN to verify finance. Each adviser stays within the decision it owns.
Archive the original application, request for more results and final decision. The sequence reveals whether the four-week rule was applied from the correct date.
Close with a verbal calculation that names weeks, rate, base credits, percentage, downward rounding, passed credits and shortfall.
Build an auditable decision file
Open the file with one sentence naming the decision and the date on which it must be made. Then attach CSN’s assessment of the reported results. A screenshot of a general webpage can explain a rule, but it is not a substitute for the learner-specific decision issued by the responsible body.
Use a one-row evidence table for each controlling fact: study pace, assessed weeks, reported credits, applicable percentage, rounding and special-reasons evidence. Give every row a source, retrieval date, status and owner. Mark an item “confirmed” only when the cited source actually proves it; use “reported”, “estimated” or “pending” for everything else.
Separate inputs from outputs. Inputs are facts supplied by the learner, institution or authority. Outputs are calculations, classifications and decisions made from those facts. If an output looks wrong, first check whether the input was incomplete, then whether the correct dated rule was applied, and finally whether the authority has recorded an exception.
Create a change log for the case. If late results are reported or the threshold is reached after the new period begins, enter the old fact, new fact, date learned, source and every conclusion that must be reopened. Do not silently overwrite the earlier state; the history explains why a reasonable plan changed.
Add a deadline map with three columns: the formal deadline, the learner’s internal deadline and the recovery route if evidence arrives late. The internal date should leave time to correct names, identifiers, attachments and payment details. Where no recovery route is stated, record that absence instead of inventing one. Recheck the official page near the action date because an archived rule can look authoritative while governing a different cycle.
Keep a contact note for every official enquiry: channel, date, question, answer and reference number. If verbal advice conflicts with a published rule or written decision, request clarification in writing and pause any irreversible action until the controlling record is clear.
Ask the learner to narrate the file aloud in under two minutes: “This is my present status; this is the rule; this is the evidence; this is the unresolved boundary; this is my next permitted action.” A listener should be able to distinguish official fact, calculation and personal choice without prompting.
Before the deadline, run a cold review using only the file. Check names, identifiers, dates, units, currency, study load and document version. Confirm receipt through the official channel and save the acknowledgement. A complete audit trail cannot guarantee a favourable outcome, but it makes omissions visible and correction faster.
Conduct one independent challenge before acting. Ask a second reader to identify the weakest assumption, find the official sentence that controls it and describe what would change if the assumption failed. Record the answer without deleting the earlier reasoning.
Frequently asked questions
What is the first-40-week requirement?
Ordinarily 62.5% of the financed university-credit base, rounded down.
What applies after 40 full-time weeks?
Ordinarily 75%, subject to the programme and CSN decision.
How many credits is one full-time week?
CSN uses 1.5 higher-education credits.
Does 37.5 round to 38?
No. CSN rounds the requirement down to 37.
Can another subject repair the shortfall?
CSN says the missing results need not be earned in the same subject or education form.
What if results arrive within four weeks?
Support may be granted from the new period’s start if the threshold is reached within that window.
Do failed credits automatically trigger repayment?
Not by themselves, if the learner was registered and studied the financed courses; future eligibility is the main issue.
Can illness be considered?
Yes, documented special reasons may be considered by CSN.
Close the workbook by explaining the process without notes. A dependable explanation names the authority, current state, evidence, deadline and consequence if one assumption fails.
