Start here: identify the decision before collecting evidence
A recreational therapy education route must be checked by sponsor, exact programme, site, award and current CAAHEP entry. The Committee on Accreditation for Recreational Therapy Education conducts profession-specific review and formulates recommendations; CAAHEP takes the programme-accreditation action. CARTE’s page currently links the 2017 standards used for applicable review work and 2023 procedures. A related recreation degree, institutional accreditation or programme request for accreditation is not the final specialist programme action.
CAAHEP accreditation does not itself award the Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist credential. NCTRC independently controls professional eligibility, transcript review, experience review, examination and CTRS certification. Current NCTRC guidance requires therapeutic-recreation and supporting coursework, a baccalaureate degree or higher, and either a qualifying academic internship or paid professional experience. The academic-internship route currently specifies at least 560 hours across 14 weeks and active CTRS supervision. Professional eligibility, exam registration, exam result, active CTRS, five-year recertification and destination-state licensure are separate records.
This guide was checked on 28 October 2026 against current primary guidance. CAAHEP, CARTE and NCTRC sources checked on 28 October 2026 distinguish programme accreditation from individual certification. NCTRC’s live route, not programme marketing, governs current coursework, transcript and experience evidence. Its professional-eligibility grant has its own five-year cycle for taking and passing the exam. Active CTRS verification includes status and relevant dates. Current recertification uses either education plus at least 480 hours of professional experience and 50 hours of continuing education, or retaking and passing the certification examination. NCTRC’s 2025 licensing summary is dated evidence; the destination board remains authoritative.
This specialist sits under The Gold Standard of Education: Learning That Transfers into Life. The parent framework keeps the purpose visible: understand the system, act on the correct evidence and build independence for the next decision.

1. Name the exact recreational therapy programme
Identify sponsor, site, award, status and intended certification route.
A recreation-related major is not the specialist programme record.
Decision rehearsal and changed-context transfer
Turn this chapter into a live file. the prospective recreational therapy student, current learner, graduate, parent, adviser, programme director, internship coordinator, academic or agency supervisor, registrar, NCTRC applicant, state-board applicant, healthcare or community employer checking a United States route states the present decision in one sentence. CAAHEP, CARTE, the sponsoring institution and exact programme, faculty, internship sites, academic and agency CTRS supervisors, learner or graduate, registrar, NCTRC, examination provider, destination state board and employer supplies only the evidence it owns. the current CAAHEP programme entry, CARTE standards and action history, learner transcript and degree, therapeutic-recreation and supporting coursework, internship or paid-experience evidence, supervisor status, NCTRC professional-eligibility decision, examination authorization and result, CTRS verification, recertification evidence, state licence and employer decision records the result. Date every source and distinguish an official fact, an institution-specific decision, an estimate and a personal preference.
Now change one condition: the receiving organisation changes. Preserve every fact that remains valid and reopen only the conclusions that depend on the changed condition. Name the new page, document, calculation or contact required. This is the difference between understanding a system and memorising one outcome.
Run a boundary test. Write what the current evidence proves, what it does not prove and who has authority over the next decision. Replace one identifier, date or category and repeat the reasoning. If the conclusion changes without a cited rule or written decision, an assumption has entered the file.
Finish with a five-line handover: current state; controlling source; unresolved question; next permitted action; review date. A parent, adviser or future learner should be able to reconstruct the case without relying on memory or a private conversation.
2. Separate CARTE from CAAHEP
Identify profession-specific review and the final accrediting action.
A self-study or recommendation is not accreditation.

3. Read the applicable standards and dates
Join the governing standards and procedures to the programme action.
A current document should not be projected backward automatically.

4. Audit coursework and degree
Match therapeutic-recreation credits, supporting courses and degree evidence.
A programme label does not replace transcript review.

5. Choose internship or paid experience
Use the applicable experience route without mixing thresholds.
Hours from different routes should not be blended casually.

6. Build the academic internship file
Preserve credit, 560 hours, 14 weeks and both supervisor roles.
General volunteering is not automatically a qualifying internship.

7. Verify supervisor status
Check active CTRS standing at the relevant starting date.
A supervisor title without current status is insufficient.

8. Obtain professional eligibility
Submit the official transcript and experience record for NCTRC review.
Eligibility is not certification.

Authoritative sources and evidence boundary
These primary sources were checked on 28 October 2026. Reopen the live record near any enrolment, recognition, immigration, transfer, funding or licensing decision because statuses, dates and operating guidance can change.
- CAAHEP current recreational therapy programme finder
- CAAHEP CARTE role, standards and procedures
- CAAHEP current recreational therapy standards index
- CAAHEP review, recommendation, action and monitoring sequence
- NCTRC current coursework, degree, internship or paid-experience route

- NCTRC application, transcript, internship and five-year eligibility guidance
- NCTRC primary-source CTRS status and date verification
- NCTRC five-year recertification options and current thresholds
- NCTRC dated state and territory licensing summary
A source can establish only the fact within its remit. Keep the current authority record beside learner-specific evidence and obtain the responsible organisation’s written decision where acceptance, credit, protection, immigration or eligibility is at stake.

Build an auditable decision file
Open with the exact decision and its deadline. Attach the current current CAAHEP programme directory entry for the exact recreational therapy programme, sponsor and location, the learner-specific record and the receiver’s published requirements. A general webpage explains a rule; it does not replace a learner-specific decision from the responsible body.
Create one evidence row for each controlling fact: sponsor, exact programme, location, award, CAAHEP action, standards and procedures, enrolment, completion, transcript, degree, therapeutic-recreation credits, supporting courses, internship credit, 560 hours, 14 weeks, academic supervisor, agency supervisor, active CTRS dates, paid-experience alternative, professional eligibility, five-year eligibility cycle, exam authorization, result, CTRS standing, certification dates, 480 experience hours, 50 education hours, state licence and employer scope. Give every row a source, retrieval date, status and owner. Mark a fact confirmed only when the cited source proves it. Use reported, estimated or pending for everything else.
Separate inputs from outputs. Inputs are facts supplied by the learner, provider or authority. Outputs are comparisons, classifications and decisions made from them. If an output looks wrong, check the input, then the dated rule, then any recorded exception.
Keep a change log for programme status, standards version, learner coursework, degree conferral, internship dates, supervisor status, paid-experience record, eligibility date, exam result, CTRS cycle, state rule and employer requirement. Record the old fact, new fact, date learned, source and every conclusion that must be reopened. Do not silently overwrite the earlier state; the history explains why a reasonable plan changed.
Add a deadline map with the formal deadline, an earlier internal deadline and the recovery route if evidence arrives late. Where no recovery route is published, record that absence rather than inventing one. Reopen the official page near the action date because archived guidance can look authoritative.
Use a responsibility matrix. CARTE owns profession-specific programme review and recommendations; CAAHEP owns programme-accreditation actions; institutions and supervisors own learner and experience evidence; NCTRC owns professional eligibility, examination and CTRS certification; states own licensure; employers own assignment within law. If two people assume the other has acted, the file should expose the gap before the deadline.
Keep a contact note for each official enquiry: channel, date, question, answer and reference number. If verbal advice conflicts with a published rule or written decision, ask for clarification in writing before an irreversible action.
Run a source hierarchy check. Put the responsible authority first, current operational guidance second, the learner-specific notice third and informal explanation last. Where two official pages appear inconsistent, record both dates and ask which governs the present case.
Schedule a cold review two working days before any irreversible boundary. Recheck names, identifiers, dates, programme codes, study load and document version. Save the submission acknowledgement without treating receipt as approval.
After the decision, reconcile the notice with the plan line by line. Record what was accepted, refused, limited or deferred and the route for correction, review or appeal. Preserve the original decision when adding later correspondence.
Add a “not yet proved” page. List every conclusion that still depends on sponsor, exact programme, location, award, CAAHEP action, standards and procedures, enrolment, completion, transcript, degree, therapeutic-recreation credits, supporting courses, internship credit, 560 hours, 14 weeks, academic supervisor, agency supervisor, active CTRS dates, paid-experience alternative, professional eligibility, five-year eligibility cycle, exam authorization, result, CTRS standing, certification dates, 480 experience hours, 50 education hours, state licence and employer scope. Beside each item, name the smallest official record that would settle it and the person who can obtain that record. This stops a plausible estimate from drifting into the confirmed column merely because it has been repeated.
Rehearse a correction request before one is needed. Identify the learner, present decision, disputed input, supporting document and requested remedy without claiming an entitlement the evidence cannot establish. Address it to the organisation that owns the record or decision, keep a copy, and record the published response or escalation route.
Ask an independent reader to challenge the file. They should identify the weakest assumption, locate the official sentence that controls it and describe what changes if the assumption fails. Record that answer without deleting the earlier reasoning; the audit trail should show learning, not pretend uncertainty never existed.
Build a conservative time and cost plan beside the evidence file. Show what is already confirmed, what is estimated, which payment or enrolment step becomes irreversible and when. Then test a delayed decision and a less favourable outcome. The exercise does not predict the authority’s answer; it prevents an optimistic reading from becoming an unexamined commitment.
Ask the prospective recreational therapy student, current learner, graduate, parent, adviser, programme director, internship coordinator, academic or agency supervisor, registrar, NCTRC applicant, state-board applicant, healthcare or community employer checking a United States route to narrate the case aloud in under two minutes: “This is my present state; this is the governing source; this is the learner-specific evidence; this is the unresolved boundary; this is my next permitted action.” A listener should be able to distinguish fact, comparison and choice without prompting.
Practise one counterfactual. Change only the programme and degree remain the same but the learner changes coursework, internship site, supervisor status, paid-experience route, exam date, destination state or certification cycle and trace which conclusions stay valid. The exercise reveals whether the learner understands the dependency chain or has memorised an answer belonging to another case.
Finish with a retention plan. Keep source documents, decisions, receipts and later corrections for as long as they remain useful to explain the education record. Store identifiers securely and share only what the named recipient needs.
Frequently asked questions
Does CARTE grant accreditation?
CARTE reviews and recommends; CAAHEP takes the programme-accreditation action.
Does a CAAHEP programme automatically grant CTRS?
No. NCTRC independently controls professional eligibility, examination and certification.
What does the academic internship currently require?
NCTRC states at least 560 hours across 14 weeks, for credit, with the required active CTRS supervision.
Can paid work replace the academic internship?
NCTRC publishes a separate paid professional work route with its own thresholds and supervision rules.
How long does professional eligibility last?
NCTRC describes a five-year cycle in which the applicant must take and pass the exam.
How is current CTRS checked?
Use NCTRC primary-source verification and read standing and dates.
How often is CTRS recertified?
NCTRC requires recertification every five years.
Does CTRS create a state licence?
No. Open the current destination licensing board and law.
Close the workbook by explaining the process without notes. A dependable explanation names the authority, present state, evidence, deadline and consequence if one assumption fails.
