Start here: identify the decision before collecting evidence
A polysomnographic technology education route must be matched by sponsor, exact programme or approved add-on, physical location, award and current accrediting record. The Committee on Accreditation for Polysomnographic Technologist Education works under the CAAHEP system to review programme quality and recommend actions; CAAHEP grants programme accreditation. CAAHEP’s standards index shows that revised polysomnographic technology standards became effective on 1 July 2026. A stand-alone CAAHEP programme, a neurodiagnostic add-on, a CoARC respiratory-care add-on and an institution’s general accreditation are different records.
Programme accreditation does not itself grant the Registered Polysomnographic Technologist credential. BRPT Pathway 3 is the education route for graduates of, or eligible students near graduation from, a CAAHEP- or CoARC-accredited polysomnography education programme. The current route requires programme-specific evidence and current CPR or BLS with a live skills component; the student waiver requires a signed programme-director letter and pending graduation within the stated window. Other BRPT pathways use different experience, credential or focused-training evidence. Examination approval, result, active RPSGT status, five-year recertification, state requirements and employer scope remain separate.
This guide was checked on 28 October 2026 against current primary guidance. CAAHEP, CoA-PSG and BRPT sources checked on 28 October 2026 distinguish programme or add-on accreditation from individual credentialing. CAAHEP says an application is not accreditation and the live directory controls current status. Its standards page dates the revised polysomnographic standards from 1 July 2026. BRPT publishes five RPSGT eligibility pathways. Pathway 3 covers CAAHEP or CoARC accredited polysomnography education, including qualifying stand-alone and add-on routes, while the student application waiver applies within two months of graduation with programme-director evidence. BRPT requires five-year RPSGT recertification by current approved means; some states add separate licensure requirements.

1. Name the exact PSG route
Identify stand-alone or add-on programme, sponsor, site, award and learner goal.
A sleep-technology label does not identify the accrediting record.
Decision rehearsal and changed-context transfer
Turn this chapter into a live file. the prospective sleep-technology student, current learner, graduate, parent, adviser, programme director, clinical coordinator, registrar, BRPT applicant, credential reviewer, state applicant, sleep laboratory or employer checking a United States polysomnography route states the present decision in one sentence. CAAHEP, CoA-PSG, CoARC where a respiratory-care add-on is claimed, CoA-NDT where a neurodiagnostic add-on is claimed, the exact sponsoring programme and site, programme director and clinical affiliates, student or graduate, registrar, BRPT, examination provider, destination state authority, sleep laboratory and employer supplies only the evidence it owns. the current CAAHEP or CoARC programme entry, stand-alone or add-on scope, applicable standards and action, learner enrolment and graduation, transcript or programme-director letter, CPR or BLS evidence, BRPT eligibility pathway, application and authorization, examination result, RPSGT verification, recertification, state record and employer decision records the result. Date every source and distinguish an official fact, an institution-specific decision, an estimate and a personal preference.
Now change one condition: the receiving organisation changes. Preserve every fact that remains valid and reopen only the conclusions that depend on the changed condition. Name the new page, document, calculation or contact required. This is the difference between understanding a system and memorising one outcome.
Run a boundary test. Write what the current evidence proves, what it does not prove and who has authority over the next decision. Replace one identifier, date or category and repeat the reasoning. If the conclusion changes without a cited rule or written decision, an assumption has entered the file.
Finish with a five-line handover: current state; controlling source; unresolved question; next permitted action; review date. A parent, adviser or future learner should be able to reconstruct the case without relying on memory or a private conversation.
2. Separate CoA-PSG from CAAHEP
Identify profession-specific review and the final accreditation action.
Committee activity is not the CAAHEP award.

3. Apply the July 2026 standards
Use the standards effective for the programme and action being checked.
Older standards should not be used as if current.

4. Distinguish stand-alone and add-on routes
Match the exact CAAHEP, CoA-NDT or CoARC programme scope.
An add-on does not inherit every property of another programme.

5. Read current programme status
Join the live directory, exact site and accreditation action.
Application or self-study is not accreditation.

6. Join learner timing
Match enrolment and graduation to the programme or add-on history.
Current status alone does not settle every learner.

7. Build the learner evidence file
Save transcript, graduation or director letter and CPR or BLS evidence.
School attendance is not complete Pathway 3 documentation.

8. Compare the five BRPT pathways
Use the pathway matching education, experience and credential evidence.
Pathway 3 is not a universal shortcut.

9. Use Pathway 3 carefully
Match the exact accredited programme and student or graduate evidence.
A related respiratory or neurodiagnostic programme is insufficient without the qualifying PSG route.

Build an auditable decision file
Open with the exact decision and its deadline. Attach the current current accreditor programme entry for the exact stand-alone or add-on polysomnography education route and location, the learner-specific record and the receiver’s published requirements. A general webpage explains a rule; it does not replace a learner-specific decision from the responsible body.
Create one evidence row for each controlling fact: sponsor, programme, site, award, stand-alone polysomnography, neurodiagnostic add-on, respiratory-care add-on, CAAHEP status, CoARC status, standards effective date, initial accreditation, continuing accreditation, learner enrolment, graduation, transcript, programme-director letter, CPR or BLS live skills, Pathway 1, Pathway 2, Pathway 3, Pathway 4, Pathway 5, student waiver, examination authorization, result, RPSGT verification, five-year recertification, state licensure and employer scope. Give every row a source, retrieval date, status and owner. Mark a fact confirmed only when the cited source proves it. Use reported, estimated or pending for everything else.
Separate inputs from outputs. Inputs are facts supplied by the learner, provider or authority. Outputs are comparisons, classifications and decisions made from them. If an output looks wrong, check the input, then the dated rule, then any recorded exception.
Keep a change log for programme or add-on scope, accreditor status, standards date, learner graduation, CPR or BLS evidence, BRPT pathway, exam result, credential term, state rule and employer requirement. Record the old fact, new fact, date learned, source and every conclusion that must be reopened. Do not silently overwrite the earlier state; the history explains why a reasonable plan changed.
Add a deadline map with the formal deadline, an earlier internal deadline and the recovery route if evidence arrives late. Where no recovery route is published, record that absence rather than inventing one. Reopen the official page near the action date because archived guidance can look authoritative.
Use a responsibility matrix. CoA-PSG performs profession-specific review and recommendations in the CAAHEP system; CAAHEP or CoARC owns the applicable programme accreditation; programmes own learner and clinical records; BRPT owns examination eligibility and RPSGT credentialing; states own licensure; laboratories and employers own assignment within law. If two people assume the other has acted, the file should expose the gap before the deadline.
Keep a contact note for each official enquiry: channel, date, question, answer and reference number. If verbal advice conflicts with a published rule or written decision, ask for clarification in writing before an irreversible action.
Run a source hierarchy check. Put the responsible authority first, current operational guidance second, the learner-specific notice third and informal explanation last. Where two official pages appear inconsistent, record both dates and ask which governs the present case.
Schedule a cold review two working days before any irreversible boundary. Recheck names, identifiers, dates, programme codes, study load and document version. Save the submission acknowledgement without treating receipt as approval.
After the decision, reconcile the notice with the plan line by line. Record what was accepted, refused, limited or deferred and the route for correction, review or appeal. Preserve the original decision when adding later correspondence.
Add a “not yet proved” page. List every conclusion that still depends on sponsor, programme, site, award, stand-alone polysomnography, neurodiagnostic add-on, respiratory-care add-on, CAAHEP status, CoARC status, standards effective date, initial accreditation, continuing accreditation, learner enrolment, graduation, transcript, programme-director letter, CPR or BLS live skills, Pathway 1, Pathway 2, Pathway 3, Pathway 4, Pathway 5, student waiver, examination authorization, result, RPSGT verification, five-year recertification, state licensure and employer scope. Beside each item, name the smallest official record that would settle it and the person who can obtain that record. This stops a plausible estimate from drifting into the confirmed column merely because it has been repeated.
Rehearse a correction request before one is needed. Identify the learner, present decision, disputed input, supporting document and requested remedy without claiming an entitlement the evidence cannot establish. Address it to the organisation that owns the record or decision, keep a copy, and record the published response or escalation route.
Ask an independent reader to challenge the file. They should identify the weakest assumption, locate the official sentence that controls it and describe what changes if the assumption fails. Record that answer without deleting the earlier reasoning; the audit trail should show learning, not pretend uncertainty never existed.
Build a conservative time and cost plan beside the evidence file. Show what is already confirmed, what is estimated, which payment or enrolment step becomes irreversible and when. Then test a delayed decision and a less favourable outcome. The exercise does not predict the authority’s answer; it prevents an optimistic reading from becoming an unexamined commitment.
Ask the prospective sleep-technology student, current learner, graduate, parent, adviser, programme director, clinical coordinator, registrar, BRPT applicant, credential reviewer, state applicant, sleep laboratory or employer checking a United States polysomnography route to narrate the case aloud in under two minutes: “This is my present state; this is the governing source; this is the learner-specific evidence; this is the unresolved boundary; this is my next permitted action.” A listener should be able to distinguish fact, comparison and choice without prompting.
Practise one counterfactual. Change only the school stays the same but the learner changes from stand-alone to add-on route, accreditor, graduation date, BRPT pathway, CPR record, destination state or employer and trace which conclusions stay valid. The exercise reveals whether the learner understands the dependency chain or has memorised an answer belonging to another case.
Finish with a retention plan. Keep source documents, decisions, receipts and later corrections for as long as they remain useful to explain the education record. Store identifiers securely and share only what the named recipient needs.
Frequently asked questions
Does CoA-PSG grant accreditation?
CoA-PSG performs profession-specific review in the CAAHEP system; CAAHEP grants programme accreditation.
When did the revised PSG standards become effective?
CAAHEP lists 1 July 2026.
Is a stand-alone programme the same as an add-on?
No. Match the exact programme, accreditor and add-on scope.
Does any respiratory-care or neurodiagnostic programme qualify for Pathway 3?
No. The route must include the qualifying accredited polysomnography education.
Can a student apply before graduation?
The current waiver applies within the stated window with programme-director evidence and other requirements.
Does programme accreditation award RPSGT?
No. BRPT controls eligibility, examination and credentialing.
Does RPSGT last forever?
No. BRPT currently requires recertification every five years.
