Competence should not depend on which assessor is watching
Two assessors observe the same device simulation but disagree about whether a missed safety check is acceptable. Assessor calibration aligns interpretation of approved competency requirements while preserving appropriate clinical judgement.
Define the assessment standard
Specify role, device, safety-critical tasks and relevant institutional procedures.
Use representative performance examples
Discuss strong, borderline and unsafe responses to clarify criteria.
Focus on observable evidence
Assess what the participant did and why, rather than confidence or presentation style alone.
Preserve context
Clinical circumstances may influence which actions are appropriate. Calibration should not become rigid box-ticking.
Record useful agreements
Concise guidance and examples can support consistent future assessment.
Recheck after changes
Device updates and revised procedures may require renewed calibration.
Break-test: a fast response omits a critical verification step
Can assessors apply the safety standard consistently?
