Competence can change after the training certificate
A clinician was trained on a device a year ago. Since then, the software and alarm workflow have changed. Competency reassessment checks whether the professional can still perform relevant tasks safely under current approved procedures.
Identify the required tasks
Assessment should reflect the user’s role, authorised responsibilities and the device’s clinical purpose.
Use current configuration
Training on outdated settings may not prepare staff for actual operation.
Observe performance
Practical demonstrations and appropriate simulations can reveal gaps that a written quiz misses.
Include unusual but consequential situations
Alarm response, equipment failure and escalation may require specific practice.
Provide targeted remediation
When gaps appear, support additional training and reassessment rather than relying only on punitive responses.
Record competence appropriately
Documentation should identify relevant tasks, assessment outcomes and necessary follow-up under institutional requirements.
Break-test: a software update changes the interface
Can the hospital identify affected staff and reassess the relevant competence before routine use?
