Find your next learning step
Useful JC2 Further Mathematics tuition identifies the first decision a student cannot yet make independently. Start with recent work, then distinguish method selection, conceptual reasoning and execution. This guide focuses on H2 support that connects advanced techniques to dependable problem solving.

For 2027, H2 Further Mathematics is syllabus 9649 and is taken with H2 Mathematics. Confirm the student’s examination year and college programme before selecting materials.
Bring recent attempts from both courses where relevant. A prerequisite gap may explain difficulty in an advanced topic, while a new concept may need its own representation.
Agree on a task that will demonstrate progress. For example, the learner will choose a suitable differential-equation method and verify the resulting solution without prompts.
Ask the student to explain the first step and why it applies. This reveals whether a correct-looking procedure rests on understanding.
Separate an unsuitable method from an algebra slip. Each correction should lead to a different practice task.
Keep a short record of recurring decisions, their repairs and follow-up questions. Use it to guide lessons rather than accumulate unreviewed corrections.
Consider y′+2y=6 with y(0)=1. Multiplying by the integrating factor e²ˣ gives d(e²ˣy)/dx=6e²ˣ. Integrating yields e²ˣy=3e²ˣ+C.
Thus y=3+Ce⁻²ˣ. The initial condition gives 1=3+C, so C=−2 and y=3−2e⁻²ˣ.
Differentiate to obtain y′=4e⁻²ˣ. Then y′+2y=4e⁻²ˣ+6−4e⁻²ˣ=6, and y(0)=1. Both the equation and the initial condition are verified.
Ask the learner to explain why the integrating factor turns the left side into a product derivative. Then change the initial condition or forcing term to test whether the method transfers.
After discussion, remove the model and let the student reconstruct the reasoning. Use a related question that changes a meaningful feature.
Reduce prompts gradually. Initially a tutor may name the method; later the learner should select it and explain why it fits.
Return to the skill after several days. A fresh independent attempt later gives stronger evidence than immediate repetition.
Use focused practice to stabilise methods and mixed work to test selection. Longer timed attempts add pacing and sustained decision making.
Include checking by substitution, limiting behaviour or another appropriate method. The learner should understand what a check establishes and what it leaves unresolved.
Coordinate workload with H2 Mathematics and school responsibilities. Reserve time for reviewing errors so new questions do not simply reproduce old mistakes.
Compare fresh work with the baseline through method choice, justification, accuracy and prompting. Ask the student to explain the improvement.
Confirm fees, duration, class size, materials and communication directly. Set a manageable amount of independent work and a review point.
The gold standard is a learner who increasingly chooses and verifies advanced methods alone. Adjust support when the evidence identifies a different conceptual or practical need.
