The Gold Standard of Thermodynamics | Mixing Exergy, Minimum Separation Work and Dilution Limits

Find your next learning step

Mixing can occur spontaneously, but reversing it requires work; the reversible minimum is set by the Gibbs free-energy change and grows sharply per mole recovered as a valuable component becomes dilute.

CHAPTER 1 OF 12 · DEFINE THE REVERSIBLE LIMIT

1. Why separation has a thermodynamic floor

Two compatible substances can mix spontaneously at the same temperature and pressure. Reversing that mixing requires work because the mixed state has greater configurational entropy. A perfectly reversible separator sets the minimum work; every real separator requires at least that much and usually more.

At environmental temperature T0 and pressure p0, the reversible work is linked to the Gibbs free-energy difference between feed and products. For ideal mixtures separated into pure components, the minimum per mole of feed is −RT0Σ xi ln xi.

This is a state-function benchmark. It does not depend on whether the practical device is a membrane, distillation column, adsorbent or centrifuge.

CHAPTER 2 OF 12 · DEFINE THE REVERSIBLE LIMIT

2. Exergy balance and product specification

Minimum work is the increase in material-stream exergy from feed to specified products when heat exchange occurs reversibly with the environment and kinetic and potential changes are negligible. Change the product purity or recovery and the minimum changes.

Pure products require more separation than two partially purified streams. Recovering every last trace of a dilute solute is more demanding than producing a modestly enriched stream with a reject.

A claim of “the minimum separation energy” is incomplete without feed composition, product compositions, recoveries, temperature, pressure, phase and property model.

CHAPTER 3 OF 12 · WORK THE MIXTURE LEDGER

3. Worked example: equimolar ideal mixture

At 298 K, take one mole of an ideal binary mixture with xA = xB = 0.5. The minimum work to create pure A and pure B is −RTΣ xi ln xi = RT ln 2.

This value is not an estimate of a real plant’s electricity use. It excludes irreversibility, pressure drops, finite selectivity, heat at non-environmental temperatures and auxiliary equipment.

CHAPTER 4 OF 12 · WORK THE MIXTURE LEDGER

4. Dilution changes the useful basis

For a feed with one mole fraction solute x and 1 − x solvent, the minimum work per mole of feed falls toward zero as x approaches zero because little solute is present. That can sound as if dilute separation becomes easy.

Per mole of solute recovered, however, divide by x. The work then grows roughly with RT ln(1/x) in the dilute limit. The scarce component carries an increasing separation burden.

Always state the basis. Per mole feed, per mole product, per kilogram product and per cubic metre feed answer different planning questions.

CHAPTER 5 OF 12 · WORK THE MIXTURE LEDGER

5. A dilute worked comparison

At 298 K, compare ideal binary feeds at xA = 0.10 and xA = 0.01, both separated into pure products. The dimensionless mixing terms are −[x ln x + (1−x)ln(1−x)].

The numbers use ideal behaviour and complete separation. They show why a basis switch is essential when discussing resource recovery from dilute streams.

CHAPTER 6 OF 12 · TRANSFER TO DILUTION

6. Changed context: imperfect products

Suppose the separator produces an enriched stream rather than pure A and leaves some A in the reject. The reversible work is calculated from the total Gibbs free energy of both product streams minus that of the feed, with material balances enforced.

Reducing purity or recovery usually lowers the minimum work, but the product may no longer meet its function. The scientifically useful comparison holds product specifications constant across technologies.

Do not compare one process at 99.9% purity with another at 90% and call the lower energy an efficiency gain. Part of the difference is a different separation task.

CHAPTER 7 OF 12 · TRANSFER TO DILUTION

7. Non-ideal mixtures need activities

For non-ideal liquids and gases, chemical potentials depend on activities or fugacities. Replace xi inside the logarithm with an activity term consistent with the property model. Enthalpy of mixing may also matter.

Strong association, electrolytes and high pressure can make the ideal formula inaccurate. A positive or negative excess Gibbs energy changes the reversible limit and phase behaviour can create different separation routes.

The companion article on chemical exergy and reference environments explains why environmental composition and standard chemical exergies must be kept distinct from the mixing term.

CHAPTER 8 OF 12 · TRANSFER TO DILUTION

8. Real work and second-law efficiency

A common thermodynamic efficiency is minimum reversible work divided by actual work. The ratio lies between zero and one for a consistently defined boundary and comparable products.

Actual work must include relevant shaft work, electricity, compression, pumping and exergy associated with heat supplied above T0. Counting only the flagship unit can overstate efficiency.

The gap between actual and minimum work represents irreversibility and auxiliary demands. The Gouy–Stodola guide connects entropy generation to exergy destruction.

CHAPTER 9 OF 12 · CHECK LIMITS AND EVIDENCE

9. Limits and misconceptions

The minimum is not a recommended operating point. Reversible separation would require vanishing driving forces and impractically large area or time. Engineering chooses a trade-off among energy, capital, throughput and robustness.

Dilution does not create infinite total work per feed; the divergence appears per recovered solute in the limit. Confusing these bases produces dramatic but misleading claims.

Mixing exergy is not the entire exergy of a reactive fuel or hot compressed stream. Physical and standard chemical exergies may dominate.

CHAPTER 10 OF 12 · CHECK LIMITS AND EVIDENCE

10. Evidence and verification route

For a modern process formulation, see Thermodynamic efficiency of membrane-assisted distillation processes, which defines minimum work through exergy and Gibbs free-energy changes for specified inlet and outlet streams.

The review Water Recovery from Brines and Salt-Saturated Solutions derives minimum separation energy and shows how dilution and recovery affect the thermodynamic limit. For non-ideal mixture foundations, use Chemical exergy of ideal and non-ideal gas mixtures and liquid solutions.

Verification should close component balances, use dimensionless activities inside logarithms, reproduce the feed/product Gibbs difference and compare the result on both feed and recovered-product bases.

CHAPTER 11 OF 12 · ASK AND CONTINUE

11. Frequently asked questions

Why does mixing happen without work?

The mixed state has more configurations and usually lower Gibbs free energy under the stated conditions. Separation reverses that change.

Is RT ln 2 universal?

No. It applies to one mole of an equimolar ideal binary mixture separated into pure components at temperature T.

Why does dilution look easy per feed?

Each mole of feed contains little solute. Dividing by recovered solute reveals the increasing burden.

What must an energy comparison match?

Match feed state, purity, recovery, pressure, temperature, product phases, boundary and included utilities.

CHAPTER 12 OF 12 · ASK AND CONTINUE

12. Final transfer check and connected reading

Recalculate the equimolar example at 320 K. The dimensionless mixing term is unchanged, while the energy scales with temperature. Explain why composition and reference temperature both belong in the result.

Then compare xA = 0.001 on feed and solute bases. If a statement says only “the minimum energy falls,” identify the missing basis and product specification before accepting it.
