Revoking a promoted eligibility rule protects the live system, but a repaired rule may later deserve another trial. Reinstatement is not a reversal of history. It is a new prospective experiment with a clear version boundary, barriers that keep failed-period information from contaminating the test and an explicit decision about what statistical wealth can carry forward.

CHAPTER 1 OF 12 · DEFINE THE DECISION
1. Make reinstatement a new claim
Name the repaired rule, the failure it addresses and the scope it seeks to regain. The claim is not that the old revocation was mistaken; it is that a new version may now satisfy a stated eligibility requirement.
Freeze code, thresholds, channel definitions and trial start time before prospective evidence arrives.
CHAPTER 2 OF 12 · DEFINE THE DECISION
2. Draw a contamination barrier
Development uses the failed history to understand and repair the rule. Confirmation must be protected from tuning choices that already saw its outcomes.
Use reserved rounds, delayed future outcomes or an independent replay stream. Record every dataset that crossed the barrier and why.
CHAPTER 3 OF 12 · WORK THE LEDGERS
3. Build a reinstatement register
A topology optimiser tracks the repaired eligibility rule and its evidence boundary.
| Evidence block | Purpose | Rule version seen | May update design? | May count for reinstatement? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revoked live rounds | Diagnosis | R3 | Yes | No |
| Repair replay | Development | R4 candidate | Yes | No |
| Reserved shadow rounds | Primary confirmation | R4 frozen | No | Yes |
| Post-reinstatement rounds | Monitoring | R4 live | No retroactive change | Yes, separately |
If a reserved block is inspected early, move it to development and create a new confirmation boundary rather than pretending independence remains.
CHAPTER 4 OF 12 · WORK THE LEDGERS
4. Worked wealth-restart protocol
The revoked rule had evidence wealth of 0.42 after adverse outcomes. The repaired R4 rule enters a trial with three possible accounting protocols.
| Protocol | Starting wealth | Interpretation | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carry all | 0.42 | Treat R4 as unchanged continuation | Reject |
| Reset to one | 1.00 | New prospective claim | Primary protocol |
| Split reserve | 0.70 live + 0.30 audit | Separate operational and audit streams | Sensitivity only |
| Borrow old peak | 2.40 | Reuse favourable pre-failure peak | Invalid for new claim |
The trial crosses its declared evidence boundary after 38 eligible rounds. Reinstatement is limited to the channels represented in those rounds.
CHAPTER 5 OF 12 · WORK THE LEDGERS
5. Keep restart rules predictable
A restart chosen after observing whether wealth is high or low can distort evidence. Define restart timing, capital allocation and stopping rules before the new outcomes are known.
If several restart times are entertained, use a formally justified mixture or treat the result as exploratory rather than selecting the most favourable path.
CHAPTER 6 OF 12 · TRANSFER THE METHOD
6. Stage operational exposure
A statistically successful shadow trial need not receive full control immediately. Reintroduce the rule through observation, capped allocation and then full eligibility, with a fallback at every stage.
Delayed outcomes from early stages remain tagged to the exposure level and version that generated them.
CHAPTER 7 OF 12 · TRANSFER THE METHOD
7. Changed-context transfer: manifold lock detection
Transfer the protocol to an optimiser whose repaired rule detects when iterates have entered a stable active manifold. Premature locking had previously accelerated the wrong subspace.
The transfer check reserves new optimisation runs and separates diagnostic trajectories from confirmation. Reinstatement permits capped acceleration first, not automatic full control.
CHAPTER 8 OF 12 · TRANSFER THE METHOD
8. Connect promotion, revocation and reinstatement
Start with the shadow-rule promotion guide and the revocation and lineage guide.
Use the sleeping-channel restart guide and the eligibility-audit guide when channels return at different times.
CHAPTER 9 OF 12 · CHECK LIMITS AND EVIDENCE
9. Limits and common misconceptions
Resetting wealth does not cleanse reused data. The information barrier and the accounting restart solve different problems.
A successful reinstatement trial supports its declared scope, not every topology, optimiser or noise regime.
CHAPTER 10 OF 12 · CHECK LIMITS AND EVIDENCE
10. Practical evidence checklist
Archive revoked version, failure diagnosis, repair changes, development data, reserved confirmation, contamination log, rule freeze and eligibility definition.
For reinstatement, save the wealth protocol, starting capital, thresholds, exposure stages, delayed-outcome policy, fallback, decision owner and monitoring window.
CHAPTER 11 OF 12 · ASK AND CONTINUE
11. Frequently asked questions
Can old valid evidence ever carry forward?
Only when the formal claim and procedure justify it. A materially changed rule normally needs a fresh prospective account.
What if every historical round influenced the repair?
Use future or independently generated evidence for confirmation and keep the historical analysis as development.
Can the rule be reinstated gradually?
Yes. Staged exposure is often the clearest way to match operational authority to accumulating evidence.
CHAPTER 12 OF 12 · ASK AND CONTINUE
12. Sources and next reading
The W3C PROV-O Recommendation provides a vocabulary for tracking entities, activities and agents. Ramdas and colleagues explain safe anytime-valid inference with e-processes. Choe and Ramdas show that combining evidence across different filtrations requires care. The restart ledgers are original teaching examples.
