A topology successor that passes a fresh-evidence study has earned a result, not unlimited authority. Promotion should move through named stages, with stronger consequences requiring stronger evidence and clearer failure exits. Retirement-lineage closure then links the new claim to the retired family, records what remains shared, and stops the old search from returning through hidden channels. The lineage closes when authority, evidence and archive roles are all explicit.

CHAPTER 1 OF 12 · DEFINE THE DECISION
1. Separate evidential success from authority
State the successor claim, topology, population, endpoint, evidence process and intended decision. A successful advisory study does not automatically justify automatic unlock, resource allocation or safety-critical action.
Authority is a governed permission. Its stages should name who may act, on which cases, with what review, and what happens when the rule abstains or conflicts with human judgement.
CHAPTER 2 OF 12 · DEFINE THE DECISION
2. Escalate authority in bounded stages
Useful stages are research observation, shadow alert, advisory flag, dual approval, bounded automatic action and full operational authority. Each transition needs prospective evidence matched to the new consequence.
Do not promote by elapsed time or absence of complaints alone. Exposure, decision opportunity and stress coverage matter; a quiet period may simply contain no difficult cases.
CHAPTER 3 OF 12 · WORK THE LEDGERS
3. Build a successor-promotion ladder
Successor S identifies a stable graph component after restart family R5 was retired.
| Stage | Permitted action | Evidence gate | Safeguard | Rollback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shadow | Log alert only | Pipeline reproducibility | No operator display | Repair |
| Advisory | Show flagged component | Prospective discrimination | Human review | Shadow |
| Dual approval | Recommend unlock | Decision benefit and calibration | Two approvers | Advisory |
| Bounded automatic | Unlock low-risk cases | Stress set and error budget | Hard exclusions | Dual approval |
| Full authority | Wider operation | Independent audit and stability | Continuous monitor | Bounded automatic |
The successor may remain useful at a lower stage indefinitely; promotion is not the definition of success.
CHAPTER 4 OF 12 · WORK THE LEDGERS
4. Work an authority-escalation decision
The panel reviews 90 locked cases plus 30 independent stress cases before moving from advisory to dual approval.
| Gate | Rule | Observed | Result | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Locked-case e-process | Cross predeclared threshold | Crossed at case 78 | Pass | Continue review |
| Stress false unlocks | At most 1 of 30 | 1 of 30 | Pass | Keep exclusions |
| Coverage | At least 80% | 74% | Fail | No automatic action |
| Human disagreement | Below 10% | 8% | Pass | Dual approval feasible |
| Lineage contamination | No hidden R5 tuning | One exposed feature found | Fail | Remove and relock |
Cases used to discover the exposed feature return to development status. They are not relabelled as confirmation.
CHAPTER 5 OF 12 · WORK THE LEDGERS
5. Match evidence escalation to consequence
Higher authority may require new populations, hidden stress sets, calibrated abstention, operator studies and independent audit. Reusing the same successful dataset cannot answer every new operational question.
Track the evidence process under optional stopping and repeated review. Anytime-valid methods can support continuous monitoring when their assumptions and filtration match the real information flow.
CHAPTER 6 OF 12 · TRANSFER THE METHOD
6. Close the retirement lineage
Create explicit relations among the retired claim, its archive, the successor entity, development activity, fresh evidence and promotion decision. Record derivation, invalidation and generation times where appropriate.
Closure confirms that R5 has no operational path, exposed evidence is labelled, shared code and mechanisms are documented, successor authority is current and future proposals must open a new review rather than reuse the closed lineage silently.
CHAPTER 7 OF 12 · TRANSFER THE METHOD
7. Changed-context transfer: adaptive routing graph
Transfer the method to an adaptive routing graph retired after repair-sequence dependence. A successor uses a fixed preregistered graph to recommend, but not execute, rerouting.
Prospective performance earns advisory authority. A hidden stress set and operator study support dual approval, while sparse incident coverage blocks automation. The retired graph remains available for failure taxonomy only.
CHAPTER 8 OF 12 · TRANSFER THE METHOD
8. Connect boundary review, retirement and restart control
Start with successor-claim boundary review and fresh-evidence design. Use family-wide stopping rules and claim retirement to recover why the earlier authority ended.
Return to reinstated-rule monitoring and multiple-restart error control when promotion shares an earlier operational pathway.
CHAPTER 9 OF 12 · CHECK LIMITS AND EVIDENCE
9. Limits and common misconceptions
Promotion is not proof that the successor is universally correct. It is permission within a defined domain and consequence. A lower authority stage is not a failed model when it delivers a useful, well-supported advisory role.
A provenance graph can show lineage but cannot create independence. Closing a retired lineage does not erase shared mechanisms, exposed analysts or code. Those dependencies must remain visible in the successor’s claims.
CHAPTER 10 OF 12 · CHECK LIMITS AND EVIDENCE
10. Practical evidence and lineage checks
Archive the successor boundary, topology, channels, population, evidence process, stopping rule, data exposures, stress set, promotion ladder, decision rights, exclusions, overrides and rollback paths.
For lineage closure, record retired authority, invalidation date, archive status, permitted uses, derivations, shared implementation, contamination events, successor generation, current authority and the review required for any later expansion.
CHAPTER 11 OF 12 · ASK AND CONTINUE
11. Frequently asked questions
Can a successor skip stages?
Only when evidence directly supports the higher consequence and reviewers document why intermediate operational learning is unnecessary.
Does anytime-valid evidence permit unlimited redesign?
No. Validity depends on the defined evidence process; unrecorded feature changes or leaked stress outcomes can change that process.
When is retirement lineage closed?
When the old authority is disabled, archive roles are controlled, shared dependencies are documented and the successor’s evidence and permissions are unambiguous.
CHAPTER 12 OF 12 · ASK AND CONTINUE
12. Sources and next reading
The W3C PROV-O Recommendation defines entities, activities, agents, derivation, generation and invalidation for explicit lineage. Ramdas and colleagues’ review of game-theoretic statistics and safe anytime-valid inference explains evidence processes for repeated monitoring. These sources support the provenance and sequential-evidence framework; the promotion examples are original teaching cases.
