A small interface change can create large downstream errors
An environmental API changes a field’s units. The service still responds, but downstream tools interpret values incorrectly. Change impact assessment identifies which users, datasets and decisions could be affected before release.
Define the proposed change
Document the field, schema, method or operational behaviour being modified.
Map dependent consumers
Identify dashboards, applications, research pipelines and other services using the affected interface.
Assess semantic effects
A change can preserve the data type while altering scientific meaning. Units, definitions and timestamps deserve particular attention.
Test representative workflows
Use contract tests and real consumer scenarios to identify breaking behaviour.
Plan migration and communication
Where appropriate, provide versioning, documentation and transition arrangements.
Monitor after release
Watch for errors, unexpected client behaviour and data-quality concerns.
Break-test: a change passes server tests but breaks an older client
Can the team identify the dependency and provide a safe correction or migration?
