A spot colour is a named ink or colourant intended to be printed on its own separation. A process-colour simulation builds an appearance from the available process inks, commonly CMYK. The simulation may be useful and visually close, but it does not turn four process separations into the specified spot ink.
This guide develops a focused reader question within the Visual Arts subject guide. It adds original worked decisions, mechanism checks, changed-context transfer and explicit limits. Read it with The Gold Standard of Education | Learning That Transfers into Life and the How X Works.
All numerical examples are invented teaching cases. They are not records from a real production job, website, clinical exposure or electrical installation.
The reader job is to preserve three layers: the design specification, the production route and the measured or observed result. A named spot swatch in a file can retain an identity even when a proofing device simulates it. Conversely, typing similar CMYK values does not create a spot plate. The International Color Consortium spot-ink proofing material explains why characterisation data matter when spot inks are communicated for proofing and printing. ICC profile specifications also distinguish process conversions from named-colour profiles. This article teaches evidence and handoff; it cannot approve a commercial print condition without the printer, current specification, substrate, ink, device and agreed proof.

A useful short answer keeps identity and observation separate. Name what the system says the item is, what operation actually occurred, what was measured, and under which conditions. If one field is missing, keep the ambiguity visible rather than replacing it with a familiar label.

19. Repair the claim that matching CMYK is the same ink
20. Build a reproducible colour handoff
Ask whether the task is file construction, soft proofing, contract proofing, press production or visual approval; each needs different evidence.
Write the claim as a small ledger: object, quantity, unit, boundary, time window, method and evidence. Mark every input as observed, stipulated, estimated or assumed. This makes a change in basis visible before it reaches the arithmetic.
For the chapter record, apply the rule to the central fictional case, preserve the unrounded inputs and label the result with its method. Then write one plausible alternative explanation and the single observation that would separate it from the preferred account.
For Visual Arts, make the chapter test concrete with six fields: source record, transformation or operating state, observation point, result, competing explanation and decision limit. Fill every field before writing the conclusion. If a field cannot be completed, preserve it as an open item. This is especially useful for “name the production question”, because a plausible final value can otherwise hide a changed boundary or undocumented intermediate step.
Change one condition that matters to this mechanism while keeping the object and reporting basis fixed. Recalculate or re-inspect the evidence, state what remains comparable, and name the stronger conclusion that still does not follow.

2. Separate spot identity from preview appearance
A screen preview is emitted light after colour management, while a printed spot is a material layer under illumination. Similar appearance in one view does not merge their identities.
Draw the mechanism before interpreting the number. Show the stages in order, name the point where each observation is made and identify at least one competing explanation. A diagram helps only when its arrows carry stated conditions.

A true spot object normally produces a named separation in preflight. A process simulation instead produces values on the process plates.
Use two checks that fail differently. Reconstruct an input from outputs, calculate a limiting case, inspect a control, or repeat the result from the definitions. Agreement is strongest when the checks do not recycle the same hidden assumption.

A fictional mark uses Spot Fern on one dedicated plate. Its CMYK proof uses 72,12,68,3 percent. The percentages document a simulation only; they are not an ink recipe or universal match.
Keep the comparison fair. Hold the specimen, destination, interval, protocol and unit constant before assigning a difference to the mechanism of interest. If a condition changes, report a changed context rather than quietly treating the rows as equivalent.

5. Keep a named colour attached to its definition
Preserve the swatch name, library or measured definition, tint values and revision. Renaming a process build to the spot name can conceal the production route.
Separate measurement from decision. A value may be correctly calculated yet too local, uncertain or method-dependent for the intended action. Report the result, its conditions and the observation that would be needed before a stronger decision.

CHAPTER 6 OF 22 · Define the two routes
6. Distinguish an alternate colour from the spot itself
Alternate-space values help preview a spot where the actual ink cannot be rendered. They are conditional approximations, not the physical ink spectrum.
Treat missing and excluded observations as evidence. Record why they are absent, which denominator they leave and whether absence could follow the process being studied. An explicit incomplete record is safer than a clean table made by silent deletion.

CHAPTER 7 OF 22 · Control production evidence
7. Record substrate and print condition
The same colorant can look different on coated and uncoated stocks because substrate colour, gloss, absorption and ink film interact.
Preserve order and identity. Equal totals can hide different mechanisms when events occur in another sequence or belong to different objects. Keep timestamps, sample identities and processing stages until the reader question no longer depends on them.

8. Use measurements without pretending one number is appearance
Record spectral data or defined colorimetric values when available, but keep instrument geometry, illuminant and observer conditions beside them.
Test a deliberately changed case. Change one assumption while holding the others fixed, calculate again and explain why the conclusion moves or remains stable. Transfer is shown when the reasoning survives the new context.

9. Check solid ink and tints separately
A 100 percent solid and a 40 percent tint need not share the same error direction. Dot gain, screening and opacity affect the scale.
State the boundary of inference in the answer. Name the system, representation and interval to which the result applies, then name one tempting stronger claim it cannot establish. The limit belongs beside the result rather than in a distant disclaimer.

CHAPTER 10 OF 22 · Control production evidence
10. Inspect overprint and opacity assumptions
A spot ink printed over another object may be opaque, transparent or somewhere between. The preview must not assume a universal blend.
Use uncertainty as structure. Identify the input most capable of changing the conclusion, vary it over a defensible range and show whether the practical choice changes. One linked sensitivity check is more useful than a long generic caveat list.

CHAPTER 11 OF 22 · Control production evidence
11. Treat gradients as ordered tint behaviour
Inspect several tint steps rather than one solid patch. Ordered differences and smoothness can matter more than the closest single endpoint.
Finish with an evidence package: source records, definitions, exclusions, software or instrument version, calculations, validation result and decision rule. A later reviewer should be able to reproduce the result and see what would cause revision.

CHAPTER 12 OF 22 · Control production evidence
12. Keep proofing and final production distinct
A proofer can simulate a spot using its own inks. Approval of that simulation does not prove the final press used the intended special ink.

A logo system may require several named colours to retain hierarchy. Judge the palette and contrast relationships, not only the smallest difference for one patch.

16. Check trapping and small-object behaviour
Small reversed type and tight edges expose registration and trapping choices. A large patch alone cannot approve those production details.
