What If a Tuition Question Has More Than One Correct Answer? | Bukit Timah Parent Guide

Three students sit around open books and worksheets at a classroom table, reading, writing and discussing the work together.

Did you know that an answer key may show one example even when the question allows several valid responses? If your child’s tuition answer differs, read the exact instruction and check the reasoning before changing it. For Bukit Timah parents, the important distinction is between a valid alternative, an incomplete answer and a genuine mistake.

Ask whether the task requests one example, every possible answer, a particular method or a supported interpretation. A response can satisfy the idea yet miss an explicit requirement. Equally, a different number, sentence or diagram can be valid when it meets all the stated conditions.

Today, compare one disputed response with the question: list the conditions, show how the child’s answer meets them and mark any uncertainty. Bring both the response and answer key to the tutor. Ask which requirement decides the result instead of asking the child simply to copy the printed version.

SECTION 1 OF 5

Read what the question actually permits

“Give an example” and “find all possibilities” create different completion requirements. One valid example may finish the first task while leaving the second incomplete. The learner should be able to explain that difference.

A question may also prescribe a method, representation or number of reasons. A correct result alone does not show that these instructions have been met. Keep the original wording beside any alternative approach.

Distinguish an example answer from an exhaustive answer list. If a worksheet key gives no explanation, ask the tutor to clarify its role. Do not infer that every unlisted response is wrong or that every plausible response must be accepted.

An ambiguous instruction can be a materials issue. Identify the missing condition and ask for clarification. The goal is a clearer teaching task, rather than making the child guess what the writer privately intended.

SECTION 2 OF 5

Test an alternative against all conditions

Original teaching illustration: “Give two positive whole numbers with a sum of 12.” A key might show 5 and 7. The pair 4 and 8 is also valid because both numbers are positive whole numbers and their sum is 12.

The pair 0 and 12 fails the word positive, although its sum is 12. The pair 4.5 and 7.5 fails the whole-number condition. A different answer is acceptable only when it satisfies every requirement.

Now change the instruction to “Find every unordered pair of positive whole numbers with sum 12; repeated values are allowed.” The complete list is (1, 11), (2, 10), (3, 9), (4, 8), (5, 7) and (6, 6). Swapping a pair does not make a new unordered pair.

These are original illustrations, not official examination questions. Use the vocabulary only when suitable for the learner. A younger pupil can explore pairs with objects while an older student explains why the list is complete.

SECTION 3 OF 5

Separate alternative wording from alternative meaning

In a language response, two sentences can express the same supported idea. Compare the meaning and the task demand rather than requiring an identical sequence of words. Precision still matters: a changed subject, condition or causal link can change the answer.

Original text illustration: “Rafi checked the departure board, then hurried to the platform.” Asked for evidence that Rafi was in a hurry, a pupil may write that he “hurried to the platform” or identify the verb hurried. Either points to the relevant textual evidence in this illustration.

“Rafi missed the train” adds an event the passage does not establish. It is not another wording of the same evidence. Teach the pupil to distinguish what the text says from what they imagine might happen next.

In Science and Humanities, different wording still needs an accurate relationship and the evidence required by the question. Ask the subject teacher or tutor about a disputed answer rather than assuming ordinary paraphrase settles an official mark allocation.

SECTION 4 OF 5

Ask the tutor a precise acceptance question

Bring the exact task, the answer key and the child’s unrevised attempt. Ask, “Which condition does this answer meet or fail?” If the issue is completeness, ask what additional part is required.

If a method was specified, separate mathematical validity from following that instruction. A valid alternative method can be discussed without pretending it completes a task designed to practise another representation.

If the key appears incomplete or erroneous, retain the work and seek clarification from the relevant educator. Do not replace a reliable source with a parent’s or an AI tool’s unsupported assurance.

For Primary 1–6, choose a discussion the child can manage. For secondary work, identify the actual subject and level. Posting Groups guide entry and initial subject levels; G1, G2 and G3 are subject levels, as the official Full SBB overview explains.

SECTION 5 OF 5

Use the disagreement to improve the next attempt

Once the requirement is clear, let the child try another suitable task. Can they check each condition, explain a valid alternative and recognise when the question asks for more than one example? That is more useful evidence than a copied correction.

In a 3-pax lesson, students can compare different valid responses and explain what stays constant. Ask how the tutor gives each learner an independent opportunity; the aim is reasoned checking, rather than voting for the most popular answer.

The SEC starts in 2027. For exam-related disputes, use the actual subject, level, candidate type and examination-year materials. A tuition illustration does not determine what an official marking scheme awards.

Keep a short note of the clarified requirement in the correction record when useful. The next action may be learning a condition, completing an answer or retaining a valid alternative. It need not be a full rewrite of every response that differs from the key.

Bring one useful example to a consultation

Bring one disputed question, the exact instruction, answer key and child’s own reasoning. Ask which conditions decide validity and what the next independent task should check. Confirm suitable subject coverage and 3-pax placement directly with eduKateSG.
