Did you know that “explain more” can leave a child unsure what to change? When a tuition marking comment is unclear, choose one marked answer and ask the tutor to show the missing step or information. For Bukit Timah families, that clarification is more useful than rewriting the whole worksheet blindly.
Ask your child to point to the comment, say what they think it means and identify the part of the answer it refers to. Record the uncertainty exactly. “I do not know which evidence is missing” gives the tutor something clearer to teach than “I do not understand my marks”.
Ask for a short example, let your child revise their own answer and then check the same skill in a fresh task. Turn feedback into an action the student can use again. Keep the first attempt and revision together so the tutor can see what changed.
Find your next step
Choose the part that matches your question, then try one small check.
SECTION 1 OF 5
Separate the score from the instruction
A score reports an outcome; a marking comment should help the student understand an improvement. A crossed-out sentence may indicate inaccurate content, irrelevant detail, unclear expression or a missing connection. Those possibilities need different responses.
Do not infer the exact reason from a tick, cross or abbreviation. Ask the person who marked the work to explain unfamiliar notation. Schools and tutors can use different shorthand. A symbol is not a universal assessment rule.
SECTION 2 OF 5
Ask for a location, a reason and an action
Three questions keep the discussion focused: “Where does the answer become unclear?”, “What is missing or incorrect?”, and “What should I do differently next time?” Bring the original question as well as the response so feedback stays connected to the task.
For “show working”, ask which reasoning step is needed. For “use evidence”, ask which claim needs support and what would count as relevant evidence. For “develop”, ask whether the answer needs a reason, example, consequence or explanation. The intended action depends on the subject.

SECTION 3 OF 5
Practise one small revision
Suppose a Science answer identifies a change but does not explain it. The tutor can help the child connect the observation to the relevant mechanism. The student should produce that link in their own answer rather than copy an impressive paragraph they cannot explain.
In English, weak support may require a precise example and an explanation of how it supports the point. In Mathematics, the repair may be one intermediate line or a reason for choosing a method. Make the smallest meaningful repair before expanding the task.

SECTION 4 OF 5
Check feedback in a new question
A neat correction shows that the page has changed. A fresh question checks whether the student can use the feedback independently. Let the tutor select a follow-up without supplying the same wording or numerical pattern. Record any prompt still needed.
Use the existing correction-notebook guide to keep a brief record of the difficulty, repair and later check. Avoid compiling every comment into a long criticism list. Choose the recurring obstacle that will make the next attempt clearer.

SECTION 5 OF 5
Connect school and tuition expectations
If school and tuition comments appear different, compare the tasks and criteria before deciding someone is wrong. Ask whether the tutor is teaching a broader skill or applying the specific expectations of that assignment. A parent does not have to settle a marking disagreement alone.
PG1–PG3 are Posting Groups and G1–G3 are subject levels; SEC starts in 2027. Check the subject, level and examination year before interpreting exam-style feedback. For assessed coursework, follow school rules and preserve the student’s authorship. eduKateSG’s reference describes premium 3-pax Mathematics teaching; confirm appropriate subject support directly.
