Education in Monaco: School Stages, Brevet, Baccalauréat and Higher-Education Routes

AI-generated illustration of an imagined study room overlooking a symbolic coastal horizon; not an actual institution.

Monaco combines its own education law with French-programme public and contracted schools, independent international pathways and specialised higher education. The right route depends on the school, the qualification and the student’s next admission decision.

Reviewed: 18 October 2026. This guide distinguishes current 2026/27 provision, examinations attached to later award sessions and already published 2027 admissions. Confirm the final school or university notice for the intended cohort.

1. Who runs education, and which qualifications are awarded?

Monaco has its own education law and administration. The Direction de l’Éducation Nationale, de la Jeunesse et des Sports (DENJS), or Department of Education, Youth and Sport, is the central school authority. Understanding the country therefore requires two questions: who operates the school, and who awards its qualification?

Public and state-contracted secondary schools follow French programmes and prepare French Ministry of Education awards. Monaco’s national information page explicitly distinguishes these from the International School of Monaco and British School of Monaco. It also confirms that Monaco has no state university. Monaco national information on ENIC-NARIC

Public schooling is free. Contracted private schools follow the public sector’s programme, timetable and qualification requirements; independent private schools have different curricular arrangements. education information booklet, February 2025

This guide concerns education in the Principality. A pupil living in neighbouring France, a Monaco resident attending school abroad and a resident attending a Monaco school can face different admission procedures even when they ultimately prepare the same French examination.

2. The school ladder and the meaning of French class names

The usual French-programme sequence is three nursery years, five elementary years, four collège years and three lycée years. Typical ages at the start of these stages are approximately three, six, eleven and fifteen. These are reference ages, not a guarantee of placement for a transferring pupil.

Nursery classes are petite section, moyenne section and grande section. Elementary classes run CP, CE1, CE2, CM1 and CM2. Collège then runs sixième, cinquième, quatrième and troisième; lycée runs seconde, première and terminale. The numbers count down through secondary school, which can initially confuse families arriving from systems that count upward.

Monaco’s cycle order groups nursery into cycle 1; CP–CE2 into cycle 2; CM1, CM2 and sixième into cycle 3; and cinquième–troisième into cycle 4. Thus a change of school building between CM2 and sixième does not end the learning cycle. Order 2016-494 on learning cycles

For a transfer, give the receiving school the actual subjects, assessment record and dates attended. Translating “Year 7” into “sixième” from the number alone can create a misleading comparison.

3. Compulsory education, entry year and enrolment

Under Articles 3–4 of Monaco’s Education Law, compulsory instruction covers ages six to sixteen completed, with the specified nationality/residence scope: Monegasque children and foreign children whose parents or guardians reside or are lawfully established in Monaco. Elementary enrolment is tied to the calendar year in which the child turns six. Nursery admission from three should not be confused with the compulsory starting age. Law 1.334 on education, consolidated text

Public primary placement follows the family’s residential sector, with a separate request for another sector. The current 2026/27 enrolment page explains the public-school procedure and directs contracted-private applicants to school appointments. elementary enrolment, 2026/27

A family moving from outside Monaco should establish eligibility and any derogation requirement, keeping previous school reports available.

Articles 4–5 require a declaration for compulsory-age education abroad and provide exceptional, supervised home education. Obtain DENJS instructions before choosing either arrangement. Law 1.334 on education, consolidated text

4. French, English and Monaco’s own language

French is the main teaching language in public and contracted schools. The government’s February 2025 booklet describes English from the first nursery year, Monégasque from CE2 through troisième, and French-as-a-foreign-language support. Monaco’s history also forms part of the distinctive local content. education information booklet, February 2025

Catholic religious instruction is provided in the public/contracted framework, with parental exemption under the Education Law. Law 1.334 on education, consolidated text

The practical language question is more specific than “Does the child speak French?” A child may converse comfortably but still need help explaining a mathematical proof, understanding laboratory instructions or writing a historical argument. Ask about the support available in the actual class and how progress will be assessed.

An English-rich section inside a French-programme school also differs from an independent English-medium curriculum. Check the language of each examined subject, the qualification being prepared and the entry assessment, rather than relying on a school’s bilingual label.

5. Nursery and elementary learning

Primary education includes nursery for ages three to five and elementary classes for approximately six to ten. General subjects are taught by primary teachers, with specialist teachers for English, Monégasque, physical education and swimming. primary education

For families, the most useful preparation is continuity: regular conversation, shared reading, counting in everyday situations and confidence following classroom routines. These are practical suggestions, not an entrance-test syllabus. A child who can explain how they sorted objects or retell a short story gives the teacher useful evidence beyond a memorised answer.

Before the move to collège, ask teachers to identify specific strengths and unfinished learning. “Good overall results” may conceal a reading-comprehension difficulty that becomes more visible when several subject teachers set written tasks.

6. School assessment, progression and support

The August 2026 school regulations give concrete examples of how progress is followed. École des Carmes provides regular teacher assessment and periodic semester results. At Lycée Albert Ier, families can consult marks and school information online, and receive term or semester results. These are school-specific reporting arrangements, rather than one national end-of-year examination for every class. school regulations adopted in August 2026

In the regulations, the final orientation council proposes progression or orientation to the head, who communicates the decision; an appeal is possible under the applicable rules. A family should therefore distinguish a teacher’s recommendation, the formal decision and the appeal procedure. school regulations adopted in August 2026

Monaco also describes adapted classes, school-inclusion units and vocational-discovery provision. Placement depends on the learner’s needs and the relevant process. education information booklet, February 2025

For example, if a child’s written answers are weak but oral understanding is strong, ask whether the concern is subject knowledge, language or another learning need. That discussion is more useful than assuming that repeating a class or changing schools is the only option.

7. Collège and the decision after troisième

Collège provides the lower-secondary stage. Its final year, troisième, brings two related but distinct tasks: completing the Diplôme national du brevet (DNB) and making an orientation decision for the next programme. The examination recognises learning; the next school placement also involves the pupil’s record, proposed pathway and admission process.

The Institution François d’Assise–Nicolas Barré (FANB) describes French, mathematics, history-geography/civic education and science written examinations, together with an oral assessment. Diplôme national du brevet

The choice after troisième should be made with the next qualification in view. A general/technological seconde, a hospitality-specific technological route, a vocational baccalauréat and a CAP do not have identical subject structures or destinations. A practical student can still progress to higher education through a vocational route, while an academically broad programme still requires later subject choices.

8. The brevet: current marks and the 2027 session

For school candidates, the DNB award uses a final mark out of twenty, with at least 10/20 required. Since session 2026, continuous assessment accounts for 40% and final examinations for 60%. The continuous component uses annual troisième subject averages. The September 2026 award note retains this framework for session 2027 and distinguishes individual candidates, whose assessment is based on final written papers. DNB award rules for session 2027

The 2027 examination note specifies four written components and an oral presentation for school candidates. Its curricular reference is the troisième programme where in force, otherwise cycle 4. Mathematics has a twenty-minute, calculator-free first part and a longer problem-solving part where a calculator is allowed. Written communication is assessed across subjects. DNB examinations from session 2027

A simple illustration: if the approved continuous-assessment average is 12 and the weighted final-examination average is 10, the combined result is 10.8. This is an illustration of the weighting, not an official prediction: option adjustments, harmonisation and the jury’s recorded marks must be taken from the candidate’s actual result.

9. General and technological lycée routes

In the general route, seconde is followed by première and terminale. Students take three specialist subjects in première and retain two in terminale, alongside common subjects. The subject combination matters for later applications: a strong overall result does not necessarily demonstrate the mathematics or laboratory preparation required by a particular degree.

Monaco’s general/technological provision includes Lycée Albert Ier, with general studies and the technological STMG and STI2D routes. STMG means sciences et technologies du management et de la gestion; STI2D means sciences et technologies de l’industrie et du développement durable. These concentrate respectively on management-related and industrial/technological study. The public Onisep directory lists these secondary options. Lycée Albert Ier programme directory

Lycée Rainier III provides STHR, sciences et technologies de l’hôtellerie et de la restauration, with its specialised seconde and subsequent hospitality-oriented technological studies. Its programme presentation also distinguishes this route from vocational cookery and restaurant service. programme presentation, 2025

10. Baccalauréat assessment and the maths cohort change

The general baccalauréat combines continuous assessment and terminal examinations, conventionally described as 40% and 60% for the standard compulsory-subject package. Options and special pathways require their own coefficient calculation. A general-bac average of at least 10/20 earns the award; candidates with at least 8 but below 10 can take the second-group oral examinations, with success requiring the final average to reach ten. general baccalauréat

FANB’s current local explanation includes anticipatory French written/oral papers, mathematics introduced in June 2026 for the 2027 bac, terminal specialty papers, philosophy and the Grand oral. baccalauréat pathways and assessment

For pupils in première in 2026/27, the mathematics paper taken in 2027 belongs to the 2028 baccalauréat session. The September 2026 replacement note sets a two-hour, coefficient-two, calculator-free examination, with a subject matched to the pupil’s mathematics programme. Its first part uses short answers rather than the earlier multiple-choice description. FANB’s calendar includes the anticipatory mathematics examination in June 2027. anticipatory mathematics, September 2026; current school and examination calendar

This distinction matters when buying revision materials: match the school year, anticipatory-paper year and final award session, rather than choosing a book merely labelled “bac 2027”.

11. BFI and European sections

The Baccalauréat français international (BFI) is a French baccalauréat pathway with additional international-section requirements. It is a different award framework from the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

Lycée Albert Ier offers the American international route; its brochure explains the additional English-language study and entry testing. The February 2026 official section register lists the school’s American seconde/BFI provision. American international-section brochure; official international-section register, February 2026

FANB advertises a British BFI pathway as new for 2026/27, alongside general and European-section baccalauréats. Its European routes use English or Italian with a non-language subject taught in the chosen language. These descriptions belong to the school’s actual offer and should not be assumed to exist in every Monaco lycée. baccalauréat pathways and assessment

An applicant should compare the extra literature, history/geography and language workload with their current proficiency. Conversational fluency may need strengthening for textual analysis and formal argument.

12. Independent IB and Cambridge pathways

The International School of Monaco describes an International Baccalaureate (IB) continuum, with the Middle Years Programme in Years 7–11 and Diploma or Career-related programmes in Years 12–13. The Diploma Programme has six subjects, normally three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, an Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. These core requirements are part of the programme, not optional enrichment. learning pathways

For a transfer into an established examination course, ask which subjects, levels and assessed work can carry across. A similar age group does not guarantee curriculum compatibility, particularly where a school is changing programmes between cohorts.

The British School of Monaco describes a Cambridge-oriented secondary curriculum, with Years 7–9 preceding IGCSE study. IGCSE means International General Certificate of Secondary Education. Its September 2026 announcements report the programme’s launch; families should confirm which year groups and later progression routes are operating for their intake. The course page explains that subjects can combine written examinations with coursework, oral or practical assessment. secondary programme; current school announcements

Neither independent pathway should be assessed using the DNB or French-bac formula. Obtain the relevant awarding-body requirements and the receiving university’s subject conditions.

13. CAP and vocational baccalauréat routes

Lycée Rainier III’s vocational offer covers hospitality/catering, industrial and service occupations. Its published presentation includes cookery, restaurant service, customer-facing work, administration, electrical systems and connected-production maintenance. The vocational baccalauréat normally follows a three-year school route after troisième; some first-year families of occupations lead to a later specialty choice. programme presentation, 2025

The two-year Certificat d’aptitude professionnelle (CAP) in production et service en restaurations is a more occupationally focused route. The school’s January 2026 admissions announcement specifically includes this CAP among September 2026 options, so it is not merely a historical course name. January 2026 admissions announcement

Training includes professional practice as well as classroom learning. Monaco’s April 2026 work-placement ordinance explains the educational purpose of school placements and distinguishes them from apprenticeship contracts. A placement must not simply fill an ordinary permanent job. Sovereign Ordinance 11.848 of 2 April 2026

Ask which award units are assessed during training and which use final examinations, and how required workplace experience is validated. Completing attendance at a lycée does not itself confer a vocational qualification. For onward study, compare the chosen specialty with the intended BTS rather than assuming every vocational bac provides equally suitable preparation.

14. Apprenticeship and work-study learning

Monaco’s public-service guidance presents alternance for young people aged sixteen to twenty-nine, combining paid workplace experience with a qualification from CAP to bac+5. The Cellule Emploi-Jeunes, within the Employment Service, supports eligible Monegasque young people, residents, and people from neighbouring municipalities who studied in Monaco, and follows apprenticeship arrangements. work-study education

A useful plan has three connected pieces: the qualification and training provider, an employer able to provide the required learning, and the appropriate contract/administrative approval. Finding an employer does not automatically secure an academic place; receiving a school offer does not automatically create an apprenticeship job.

For example, a young person interested in accounting should check whether the planned training timetable fits the employer’s work, who supervises the relevant tasks and how workplace learning contributes to assessment. An attractive job title without the required training arrangements may not support the intended qualification.

15. BTS, hospitality preparation and the DCG

The Brevet de technicien supérieur (BTS) is a short-cycle higher qualification, not the same award as the secondary vocational bac. Current Onisep listings for Lycée Rainier III include two-year BTS programmes in comptabilité et gestion, support à l’action managériale and management en hôtellerie-restauration. Hospitality options concern restaurant-unit management, culinary-production management and accommodation-unit management. A one-year hospitality upgrading class is also listed. Lycée Rainier III course directory

The local Diplôme de comptabilité et de gestion (DCG) needs particularly careful explanation. The government booklet describes a two-year preparation after the accounting BTS, leading to a bac+3-level award. The qualification level and this particular student’s elapsed years of study are different measurements. It should not be presented as a universal one-year top-up. education information booklet, February 2025

BTS admission and BTS examination registration are also separate. The Académie de Nice publishes the examination procedure, including Cyclades registration; students should follow their institution’s instructions for their session. BTS examinations

After a BTS, further study depends on the receiving programme and any recognised exemptions or credits. Compare the actual remaining requirements before calculating a completion date.

16. How post-school applications differ

There is no single application route covering every Monaco post-school institution. The government’s 2026/27 service covers Rainier III’s BTS, hospitality preparation and DCG. Selection involves an application dossier followed by an interview for shortlisted candidates. The hospitality preparation class serves general-bac and non-STHR technological-bac applicants seeking BTS MHR; the local DCG intake is limited to accounting-BTS holders. post-baccalauréat applications, 2026/27

Nursing at the Centre Hospitalier Princesse Grace (CHPG) uses Parcoursup for baccalauréat applicants. Pavillon Bosio explicitly runs its own entrance process outside Parcoursup. IUM has its own university application and selection procedures. admission to the nursing institute, 2026; first-year entrance competition, 2027; BBA

Build an application list around programmes rather than countries. For each choice record the award, eligibility, application platform, supporting work, selection method, final qualification condition and response deadline. A student can need a portfolio for one course, a written motivation statement for another and an academic/English assessment for a third.

When considering study abroad, ask the destination institution how it evaluates the exact bac, IB or other qualification. Monaco residence does not, by itself, settle another country’s tuition classification, immigration requirements or admission rules.

17. Nursing and continuing-professional entry

The CHPG Institut de formation en soins infirmiers (IFSI), or nursing-training institute, is a distinct professional higher-education route. Its 2026 Parcoursup listing identifies a state nursing diploma conferring the grade of licence, with the intake’s award endpoint in June 2029. This illustrates the three-year pathway and its connection with the university grouping. CHPG nursing programme, 2026 intake

CHPG’s current admission page separates baccalauréat applicants through Parcoursup from continuing-professional-training candidates. The latter route requires at least three years of contributions to a social-protection scheme and has a quota; its 2026 selection notice gives the relevant procedure. Previous employment is therefore not simply substituted informally for school-leaver admission. admission to the nursing institute, 2026

For nursing, check both academic and clinical-training requirements in the cohort handbook, including placement assessment and any health or administrative prerequisites. The course’s professional character means an applicant should consider patient communication and supervised practice as well as classroom science. A completed qualification and authorisation to practise in a destination jurisdiction remain separate checks.

18. Art and scenography: the DNA and first-year selection

Pavillon Bosio, the École supérieure d’arts plastiques de la Ville de Monaco, provides a three-year first cycle leading to the Diplôme national d’art (DNA), followed by a two-year second cycle. The school specialises in art and scenography, the design of spaces for performance and exhibition. Its published handbook sets out the degree framework. student handbook 2025/26

In third year, the programme includes practical/theoretical development, a reflective written work, a professional placement and a diploma presentation of autonomous artistic work. This is a concrete example of completion through demonstrated practice, rather than a degree awarded solely for attending three years. third-year DNA studies

The live first-year admissions page now announces the 2027 competition. It normally requires the baccalauréat and an age below twenty-four at the competition, with exceptional derogations requested in advance. Selection includes theoretical, artistic and English tasks, a portfolio and an interview; a mark below 6/20 in a task is eliminatory. Non-French-speaking candidates need the specified B2 French evidence. first-year entrance competition, 2027

A portfolio should show a developing enquiry and decisions made during the work, not only polished final images. Check the current file-size, project-count and deadline rules before preparing the submission.

19. The DNSEP and admission into the art master’s cycle

The fourth and fifth years lead to the Diplôme national supérieur d’expression plastique (DNSEP), an art/scenography qualification at master’s level. Entry to fourth year is selective: Pavillon Bosio’s 2027 page names relevant French art diplomas and provides other admission/equivalence routes, including qualifying prior study of 180 European credits under its stated conditions. A portfolio and interview form part of the selection. fourth-year admission, 2027

This is not an automatic upgrade available to any person holding any bachelor’s degree. Applicants whose previous award is from another system need the school’s comparability assessment and should check the required translations and French-language evidence.

The fifth-year page describes a personal diploma exhibition presented to a jury, together with work in a chosen scenography research/creation workshop culminating in a public presentation. The outcome can involve an exhibition, performance or fashion presentation according to the project. fifth-year DNSEP studies

The 2025/26 handbook specifies a twenty-minute dissertation defence and forty-minute presentation of artistic work. The final diploma contributes thirty credits, five for the dissertation and twenty-five for artistic work, within the 300-credit qualification. Applicants should check their cohort’s handbook. student handbook 2025/26

20. IUM’s bachelor route

The International University of Monaco (IUM) is a private, English-medium business university. Its Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) is a three-year programme. Applicants need the school-leaving qualification and English preparation required by the university; the current programme page describes a B2 English expectation and accepted evidence or assessment. BBA

The 2026/27 study plan moves from business foundations to functional subjects and international experience, then specialisation. Subjects include accounting, economics, management, quantitative work and communication. The university describes study abroad in the second year and specialist choices such as international finance, global business and digital business development. Its structure FAQ includes a four-to-six-month final internship. BBA study plan 2026/27; bachelor programme structure FAQ

The government recognition order distinguishes the ordinary BBA, equivalent to 180 European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) credits, from the Honors Track equivalent to 240. IUM recognition Order 2023-575

21. Master of Science and MBA routes

IUM’s MSc, or Master of Science, programmes should be checked by specialism and intake. The current Luxury Management page describes a September route of sixteen months, including ten months of courses and an internship period, with entry from a degree carrying at least 180 ECTS. It identifies internship, thesis or applied-project work among the programme’s professional/research components. MSc in Luxury Management

January admission is not necessarily the same starting point. The university’s January 2026 explanation describes direct entry to term two for eligible business-management graduates with 240 ECTS or equivalent prior study. A holder of a standard 180-credit bachelor should not assume eligibility for that accelerated entry. January 2026 intake explanation

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is aimed at applicants with a bachelor’s degree and at least three years of professional experience. The published options are ten months full-time or twenty months part-time. Its practical component is a company consultancy project rather than an internship. Monaco MBA

22. The professional doctorate

IUM offers the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), a professional research doctorate. Its current programme page describes a three-year format for applicants with a master’s degree, at least five years of managerial experience, a research topic and appropriate English proficiency. This is not a direct school-leaver or ordinary bachelor-entry route. Doctor of Business Administration

The published structure connects research-methods study with preparation of a doctoral thesis, involving IUM and Management Center Innsbruck (MCI) in Austria. The university’s dated DBA brochure additionally illustrates external thesis evaluation and a defence in Monaco. Applicants should obtain the regulations and timetable for their own cohort rather than copy residential-week dates from that brochure. DBA research structure; published DBA programme brochure

A suitable proposal turns a professional problem into a researchable question. For example, “improve hotel service” is a management aim; a study comparing how specific service practices affect a defined outcome needs a justified method, evidence and critical analysis. Professional seniority supplies context, but does not replace the research work required for a doctorate.

23. Recognition, study grants and cross-border decisions

IUM recognition Order 2023-575 lists specific first-, second- and third-cycle awards and recognises them through the end of academic year 2027/28. Check the named diploma and the applicable period rather than treating an institution’s brand or an accreditation logo as a blanket guarantee for every course. IUM recognition Order 2023-575

For foreign qualifications in Monaco, the Centre d’Information de l’Éducation Nationale (CIEN) performs the national ENIC information/recognition role. Its statements of comparability support study and employment decisions. Regulated professions require their own competent-authority checks, particularly health professions. Monaco national information on ENIC-NARIC

Study funding also has defined eligibility. The July 2026 grant regulation includes Monegasque students, specified family categories, certain dependants of public-service personnel and foreign students with ten years’ uninterrupted Monaco residence. Admission to a school or university is not itself a grant entitlement. The 2026/27 notice set a submission deadline at 14:00 on the last Friday of September, even for an incomplete application; that window has passed at this guide’s review date. study-grant regulation of 3 July 2026; study-grant notice for 2026/27

Ask separately about tuition, accommodation, transport, placements and study-abroad costs. A public-school fee statement does not describe the cost of an independent school or private university.

24. Three practical pathway examples

A family transferring after primary school. Their first task is to identify the receiving curriculum and class, then compare the child’s actual reading, mathematics and language record. Ask how unfinished learning and language needs will be supported across the transition.

A student choosing hospitality. Compare the technological STHR route, vocational cookery/service routes and CAP by qualification, teaching balance and intended next step. If a later BTS is the aim, establish whether a preparation year is required for that student’s prior bac and how admission is selected.

A business graduate considering further study. Record the completed degree and credits before selecting an MSc intake. Then compare an academic specialist master’s with an experience-based MBA. A future DBA requires another decision about research purpose and professional experience, not simply the next application after a bachelor.

25. Frequently asked questions

Does compulsory education start at three because the school uses French programmes? Monaco’s own legal starting age is six. Nursery availability and curriculum alignment are separate questions.

Is the brevet the same as the baccalauréat? No. They belong to the ends of collège and lycée respectively. The next placement and the award decision also need to be distinguished.

Are BFI and IB interchangeable? No. The BFI is within the French baccalauréat framework. The IB Diploma has its own subjects, core and award conditions. University applicants should name their actual qualification.

Is a BTS a bachelor’s degree? It is a short-cycle higher qualification. Further study requires the receiving programme’s admission and completion conditions.

Can an international applicant use one Monaco application portal for everything? No. Check the route-specific process: lycée higher courses, nursing, art-school selection and IUM do not all share one application channel.
