What is PG3 Science (Physics, Biology)? PG3 means Posting Group 3, the secondary-school admission grouping in Singapore. G3 Science (Physics, Biology) is a named, two-discipline subject in the 2027 Singapore–Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC), registered as K327. The subject includes Physics and Biology within one combined Science examination result. It does not register candidates separately for full G3 Physics K323 and full G3 Biology K325.
Did you know? Physics and Biology can both help explain a runner’s movement, but they ask different questions. Physics might examine motion, forces and energy transfers. Biology might investigate how organ systems respond to activity. A student becomes a stronger scientist when they know which explanation a question requires instead of using an impressive-sounding term from the wrong discipline.
For families planning junior college (JC), polytechnic and later university, Physics–Biology can provide valuable scientific foundations. Yet the child’s subject combination, overall SEC record and the destination’s published entry rules matter. A combined Science entry is not the same as two separate standalone Science grades, and PG3 itself does not guarantee admission to any future programme.

1. Posting Group 3 is not the name of a national Science paper
When a student says “I take PG3 Biology and Physics,” a parent should check whether the child is describing entry through PG3, two separate G3 Sciences or a combined subject. Under Full Subject-Based Banding, a Posting Group sets an initial school-entry context while subjects are studied at particular General levels according to school offerings and eligibility.
The 2027 SEC calls this combined subject Science (Physics, Biology) K327. The two disciplines are examined as parts of one registered subject. A learner cannot decide that Biology Paper 4 is optional just because Physics is their preferred subject. Nor does K327 include Chemistry Paper 3.
A school may offer various combinations and may set subject-selection conditions. If the school does not offer K327, the national listing is not a guarantee that the learner can register it there. For an introduction to the framework, read What is PG3 | MOE and SEAB Syllabus.
2. Know the exact 2027 K327 paper map
| Required paper | Content and format | Duration | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 — Multiple Choice | G3 Physics and Biology, 40 questions | 1 hour | 20% |
| Paper 2 — Physics | Structured and free response, 65 marks | 1 hour 15 minutes | 32.5% |
| Paper 4 — Biology | Structured and free response, 65 marks | 1 hour 15 minutes | 32.5% |
| Paper 5 — Practical | Approved Physics and Biology laboratory tasks, 30 marks | 1 hour 30 minutes | 15% |
The total is 20% + 32.5% + 32.5% + 15% = 100% for one combined Science subject. Physics and Biology need individual preparation, yet neither should be treated as a separate full-syllabus SEC result. If a student buys practice books for all three Science disciplines, some questions may fall outside the examination the candidate actually registered for.
The structured papers include compulsory material and a limited question choice under the formal syllabus. Students must still revise the examinable areas broadly instead of assuming that an optional question permits them to skip a large chapter. The school and current SEAB documents should be used for exact paper instructions.
3. How K327 differs from the other Science pairings
| 2027 SEC subject | Subject code | Two structured-response papers |
|---|---|---|
| Science (Physics, Chemistry) | K326 | Physics Paper 2, Chemistry Paper 3 |
| Science (Physics, Biology) | K327 | Physics Paper 2, Biology Paper 4 |
| Science (Chemistry, Biology) | K328 | Chemistry Paper 3, Biology Paper 4 |
All three have a common assessment pattern but not identical content. An MCQ paper and practical test must correspond to the two disciplines in the student’s own pair. “Combined Science” alone is too broad a description for preparing a national examination accurately.
The equivalent G2 pair is registered as K224 for Physics–Biology, with a different assessment structure. Check G-level as well as subject title, because the G2 paper numbering and practical arrangements are not the same as G3. See the G3 combined Science paper comparison.
4. Physics: learn to read motion as a relationship
Speed and velocity tell different stories
Distance covered and change of position are related but not identical. The speed of a runner can be calculated from total distance over time; average velocity requires displacement and direction. A student should identify which quantity is needed before selecting a numerical method.
Forces need a clearly chosen object
A force diagram should show the interactions acting on the chosen body. When the object is not clearly identified, learners often add forces that act on other things or confuse a force with motion itself. Better diagrams become better explanations.
Energy reasoning requires a system boundary
When an object slows, the learner should ask where energy is transferred and what interactions are involved rather than state that energy simply vanished. The description must fit the physical model and the evidence provided.
Electricity and waves require appropriate units
Frequency, wavelength, current and potential difference are different quantities. Their relationships are meaningful only when the student uses the right diagram, units and assumptions. School-supervised demonstrations are appropriate; unsupervised mains-power experiments are not.
5. A Physics worked example: a lap is not a displacement
Original hypothetical task: A learner travels a complete 400-metre lap around a marked track and returns to the starting point in 80 seconds. Average speed is 400 ÷ 80 = 5 m/s. What is the average velocity for the whole completed lap?
Because the finishing position is the starting position, the total displacement is zero. Thus the average velocity is 0 m/s over the entire lap. The learner has moved and has nonzero average speed, yet average velocity can be zero because displacement and distance answer different questions.
Did you know? That apparently paradoxical answer is one of the clearest tests of whether a student understands a concept or only remembers a formula. The better habit is to sketch the path, distinguish the two quantities and then calculate.
6. Biology: living systems require connected explanations
Cells link structures with functions
Cells contain structures suited to particular roles. Naming an organelle is useful only if the learner can explain how its presence, organisation or properties support an actual process. A labelled diagram should serve an explanation, not replace it.
Transport involves movement across boundaries
Diffusion, osmosis and active transport have precise meanings. They cannot be used as interchangeable scientific expressions. A good response specifies what moves, the relevant boundary and the conditions influencing the process.
Respiration is not the same as breathing
Breathing involves movement of air. Cellular respiration involves chemical processes through which cells obtain usable energy. The two are connected within larger living systems, but one is not a synonym for the other.
Regulation and response are processes
Human physiology involves sensing changes, communicating information and producing appropriate responses. A description of homeostasis must recognise regulation around acceptable conditions, rather than claim the body maintains one absolutely unchanging value.
Ecosystems contain networks
A food chain can help introduce how energy passes from one organism to another. Real ecosystems often form interconnected food webs. The learner should distinguish energy transfer from the cycling of material and avoid predicting a whole ecosystem from one isolated example.
7. A Biology practice example: a claim needs a control
Fictional worksheet data: A class compares the average growth of two groups of seedlings. Group A receives Condition A and grows an average of 5 cm; Group B receives Condition B and grows 8 cm. The figures are invented for reasoning practice, not measurements from real biological material.
Can we say Condition B definitely caused the extra growth? Not yet. Perhaps initial seedling size, light exposure, water availability or observation time also differed. A useful biological investigation must define the intended independent variable, measure the dependent response and keep important other conditions comparable.
A strong written answer says, “Group B had the greater recorded mean growth, but the provided information does not establish that the named condition alone caused the difference.” This is careful scientific reasoning, not indecision.
The example is intentionally conceptual; pupils should not attempt unsupervised investigations with microorganisms, chemicals or unfamiliar biological material. Lab safety and candidate-authorship requirements belong to the school.
8. What does the practical examination assess?
Paper 5 carries 15% of K327 and lasts 90 minutes. It assesses practical skills relevant to the Physics and Biology components, under the actual SEAB task, apparatus and school-supervision requirements. It does not become Chemistry practical simply because another pair in the same shared syllabus contains Chemistry.
Practical reasoning includes recognising the variable being investigated, gathering reliable measurements, recording observations honestly, selecting an appropriate table or graph and evaluating limitations. A student who draws a smooth graph but cannot justify the axes may have a deeper difficulty than presentation.

9. From Secondary 1 Science to Secondary 4 mastery
| Stage | Meaningful preparation | Parent check |
|---|---|---|
| Secondary 1 | Scientific observation, measurement, Mathematics foundations and basic living-system ideas. | Can the child say what is known and what is inferred? |
| Secondary 2 | More demanding physical models, biological explanations, diagrams and data. | Can the student move between a graph and a written explanation? |
| Secondary 3 | The selected Physics–Biology course where offered; increasing accuracy and depth. | Are misconceptions diagnosed separately in each discipline? |
| Secondary 4 | K327 written and practical exam preparation, revision of both disciplines. | Can the learner explain an unfamiliar problem without model-answer prompts? |
A Physics error might begin with a missing unit. A Biology error might begin with confusing diffusion and osmosis. They require different repairs. The goal is not to label the entire child “weak at Science” but to find the first broken model and practise a changed example after feedback.
10. Choosing the pair under Full Subject-Based Banding
The best pairing depends on genuine strengths, interest, school availability and a sustainable overall timetable. Physics–Biology brings physical and living-system perspectives together, but that does not mean it is universally better for every medical, engineering or technology programme. Some later courses require specific Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics qualifications.
A student who enjoys Biology should not choose K327 simply because its title contains Biology. Ask whether the learner also understands and enjoys quantitative Physics. Likewise, enthusiasm for Physics needs to be balanced with a willingness to study biological processes and extended scientific descriptions. A good combination supports both disciplines.
11. What is the JC and MI pathway?
MOE has announced that the first 2027 SEC cohort will receive results in January 2028 and apply to the main post-secondary routes through the new Post-Secondary Admissions Exercise (PSE). JC entry from 2028 uses revised L1R4 criteria with a gross eligibility threshold of 16, subject grouping and minimum-grade requirements.
K327 is one combined Science entry within a broader SEC record. It cannot be counted as two separate full-syllabus Physics and Biology grades simply because its title names two disciplines. The particular JC’s H1/H2 subject-combination prerequisites are a further decision after general JC eligibility. Families interested in H2 Biology, Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics should read those institution-specific rules carefully.
A combined Science learner may have qualifying JC options, but no universal result or timetable guarantees every JC or every Science subject combination. The most useful preparation is strong conceptual learning, suitable overall results and early verification of the intended institution’s criteria.
12. Polytechnic: could Physics–Biology lead to applied study?
Possible areas to investigate include health-related technologies, biomedical engineering, environmental fields, applied biological sciences, laboratory technology, engineering or science-related diplomas. These are study interests rather than assured pathways. Each diploma sets its own minimum subject requirements and admissions selection conditions.
MOE’s announced 2028 polytechnic Year 1 reform allows an eligible G2 subject in the last best-subject slot under ELR2B2 and changes the aggregate cut-off to 22. That does not make every Science pair eligible for every course, nor does it waive required English, Mathematics or particular Science grades.
In polytechnic, students may encounter lab reports, measurements, real-world projects and specialised technical knowledge. A strong K327 foundation can help with observing, analysing and communicating scientific evidence, while later studies supply the new subject-specific knowledge.
13. University: distinguish interest from prerequisites
Physics and Biology together may inspire interests in biomechanics, biomedical technology, biological sciences, environmental systems, physical sciences, engineering or computing-related health applications. But universities ordinarily assess accepted post-secondary qualifications such as A-Levels or recognised diplomas, with programme-specific prerequisites and selection processes.
For example, a future health-related course may require a later Chemistry qualification even if the student studied Biology within combined Science. An engineering programme may rely heavily on higher-level Mathematics and Physics. The correct route is to examine current programme pages and work backward—not assume the K327 subject title meets every future requirement.
14. Common K327 mistakes
- Revising Chemistry Paper 3 instead of registered Biology Paper 4.
- Assuming one K327 examination gives two standalone Science grades.
- Confusing average velocity and average speed in motion questions.
- Forgetting units or the labelled system in Physics diagrams.
- Treating breathing and cellular respiration as the same process.
- Mixing diffusion, osmosis and active transport without specifying what moves.
- Writing a biological cause that is not established by the supplied data.
- Ignoring that a 15% practical paper still tests authentic laboratory competence.
- Treating one combined Science result as an automatic admission prerequisite for every H2 Science.
A useful correction is short: name the misunderstood concept, explain it in the student’s own words and test it in a fresh problem. In Physics, draw the model. In Biology, draw or describe the process. In both, check the relevant evidence and avoid conclusions that outrun it.
15. A four-week revision rhythm
| Week | Focus | Evidence of progress |
|---|---|---|
| 1 — Physical quantities | Units, diagrams, one motion example and one selected Physics topic. | The learner identifies the correct quantity without a hint. |
| 2 — Biological mechanisms | Cells, transport and one organism-level process. | The learner explains a cause-and-effect chain accurately. |
| 3 — Evidence and practicals | Interpret school-provided measurements and theoretical experiment designs. | Graphs and conclusions are grounded in the data. |
| 4 — Combine | Attempt the right K327 paper types and correct the first false step. | Improvement is visible in both Physics and Biology. |
Keep adequate time for English, Mathematics, Humanities and rest. A realistic schedule supports independent thinking better than repeated late-night memorisation. Practical work must remain with school-approved supervision.
16. Five questions for the school’s combination briefing
