What is so Awesome About Nan Chiau High School | 2026-2027 Edition

Three secondary students review open books and notes together in a classroom.

Did you know that Nan Chiau High School can take a Secondary 1 student from Arduino coding, electronics, 3D printing and Design Thinking into emerging technologies, research projects, Chinese literature, bicultural immersion, art talent development and student leadership — all inside one four-year secondary journey?

That combination captures Nan Chiau High School, or NCHS, very well in 2026.

Founded in 1941 by Tan Kah Kee as Nan Chiau Teachers’ Training School, Nan Chiau has a long Chinese-education heritage. Today it is a Special Assistance Plan school whose vision is Future-Ready Thinkers · Bicultural Leaders · Caring Citizens.

Its 2026 Total Curriculum deliberately brings together Teaching & Learning, the SAP Bicultural Programme, Character and Citizenship Education, Learning for Life, and Applied Learning.

So what is so awesome about Nan Chiau High School? It is the way a school with deep cultural roots uses those roots as a foundation for technology, inquiry, creativity and global outlook.

The Quick Answer: What Makes Nan Chiau High School Stand Out?

  • A heritage dating to 1941. NCHS was founded by Tan Kah Kee and later became a major Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan institution.
  • A distinctive SAP identity. Nan Chiau has been officially designated as a Special Assistance Plan school since January 2012.
  • All students read Higher Chinese. The school’s current admissions information makes this part of the NCHS experience.
  • Emerging Technologies is the Applied Learning Programme. Students encounter electronics, coding, 3D printing and Design Thinking before progressing to applied projects.
  • The Bicultural Programme spans four years and three tiers. It develops bilingual competence, cultural confidence and global awareness.
  • CLEP-Sec gives advanced Chinese learners a serious literature pathway.
  • Art talent has its own ladder. Lower-secondary Art Talent Programme can lead into MOE’s Enhanced Art Programme.
  • Humanities and Science both emphasise inquiry. Students investigate contemporary issues and apply knowledge beyond ordinary classroom exercises.

Did You Know? Nan Chiau Began as a Teachers’ Training School

Nan Chiau was founded in 1941 by businessman, community leader and philanthropist Tan Kah Kee as Nan Chiau Teachers’ Training School.

Its first campus stood at Kim Yam Road in River Valley on land associated with Lee Kong Chian. During the Japanese advance in early 1942, the campus was used by Dalforce, the Chinese volunteer force formed to defend Singapore.

After the war, the school reopened in 1947 as Nan Chiau Girls’ High School with an associated co-educational primary school.

That history makes Nan Chiau part of several Singapore stories at once: Chinese community education, wartime history, post-war reconstruction, bilingual policy and modern town development.

Future-Ready Thinkers, Bicultural Leaders, Caring Citizens

NCHS’s 2026 vision names three outcomes: Future-Ready Thinkers, Bicultural Leaders and Caring Citizens.

The school mission adds three useful verbs: learn with zest, lead with confidence and serve with empathy.

Those ideas form a coherent triangle.

Thinking without cultural understanding can become narrow. Leadership without empathy can become self-centred. Service without competence can remain symbolic.

The school’s Total Curriculum tries to develop all three together.

Emerging Technologies: Technology as Applied Learning

Nan Chiau’s Applied Learning Programme is titled Emerging Technologies.

The programme connects academic knowledge from Mathematics, Science and Design & Technology to authentic technological problems.

Secondary 1 students learn Arduino coding and electronics, 3D printing, 3D pens and Design Thinking.

By Secondary 2, students extend that foundation into projects built around emerging-technology themes while continuing to use Design Thinking protocols.

This progression is important.

Technology becomes more meaningful when students do not merely use a tool but understand how to connect a problem, a user and a technical solution.

Why Design Thinking Matters Before the Prototype

Students sometimes want to jump directly from idea to product.

Design Thinking slows them down at the useful moment.

  • Who experiences the problem?
  • What evidence shows the problem is real?
  • Which constraints matter?
  • What assumptions are we making?
  • How will we test whether the solution works?

That is how technical skill becomes human-centred problem-solving.

Science: Joy, Literacy and Challenge

NCHS’s Science department describes three important goals: building scientific knowledge and skills, creating joyful learning, and developing scientific literacy so students can make informed decisions about the natural world.

The Science Talent Programme then gives interested students opportunities to move further through Biology, Chemistry and Physics Olympiads and other advanced challenges.

This is a useful ladder.

Everyone gets a strong floor. Students with stronger interest can climb higher.

Bicultural Education: World-Ready and Emotionally Rooted

The school’s SAP Bicultural Programme has a particularly memorable goal: develop students who are world-ready and emotionally rooted.

That is an excellent description of healthy biculturalism.

A student should be confident enough in heritage and language to know where they come from, while remaining open enough to understand other communities and operate internationally.

The four-year programme is organised in three tiers, moving from broad cultural foundations toward deeper application.

Secondary 1: Puppetry and Chinese Culture

All Secondary 1 students take part in a puppetry module taught by professional theatre teachers and attend cultural modules exploring areas such as Chinese customs, mythology, cuisine, architecture, literature, movies and modern songs.

This is strong cultural education because culture is not presented as a fixed museum list.

Traditional material is connected to contemporary life.

Bicultural Ambassadors: From Learning Culture to Representing It

Students selected as Bicultural Ambassadors can receive deeper enrichment, including subsidised study trips to China in Secondary 2 and Taiwan in Secondary 3 under the current scholarship framework.

The educational shift is significant.

The student is no longer only learning about culture.

The student becomes someone expected to interpret, communicate and represent cultural knowledge responsibly.

CLEP-Sec: Chinese Language and Literature at Greater Depth

Nan Chiau offers the two-year Chinese Language Elective Programme at Secondary Level to eligible Secondary 3 students.

CLEP-Sec students take Chinese Literature and participate in literary lectures, Meet-the-Author sessions, enrichment workshops, project competitions, camps and overseas immersion.

This is advanced bilingual education in the proper sense.

The learner is not simply becoming more accurate in Chinese.

The learner is becoming capable of thinking deeply through Chinese language and literature.

Humanities: Contemporary Singapore as a Thinking Problem

The Humanities department runs a Contemporary Singaporean Issues Forum for upper-secondary students.

The forum is designed to help students understand the interconnected nature of Singapore and the wider world, appreciate that social challenges are complex, and think critically about possible solutions.

This is exactly what good Humanities education should do.

Students move beyond memorising events and begin examining systems, perspectives, evidence and trade-offs.

Humanities Talent Programme: Complexity Needs More Than One Lens

Students with strong interest in Geography, History and Literature can enter the Humanities Talent Programme.

The programme gives students deeper exposure to complex societal issues from multiple disciplinary perspectives.

That multi-disciplinary habit is increasingly important because real problems do not label themselves “History problem” or “Geography problem”.

Enhanced Art Programme: Talent Needs Real-World Connections

Nan Chiau is one of the schools offering MOE’s Enhanced Art Programme at upper secondary.

Students with artistic interest can first be developed through the lower-secondary Art Talent Programme, then continue into EAP in Secondary 3 and 4.

The programme includes real-world links with creative practice and industry and can lead to Art or Higher Art.

This is an excellent talent pipeline because exposure, interest, skill and deeper specialisation happen progressively.

Aesthetics: Art, D&T, Nutrition and Music

At lower secondary, students experience Art, Design & Technology, Food & Consumer Education and Music.

That broad aesthetic and applied foundation matters.

Students learn to make, compose, design, cook, evaluate materials and express ideas in forms that conventional academic subjects do not always access.

Creativity is not one subject.

Leadership: Many Roles, Different Forms of Responsibility

NCHS’s 2026 leadership ecosystem includes Bicultural Ambassadors, Peer Support Leaders, Sport Leaders, Student Council, Class Council, Service Learning Champions and the FALCONS Leadership Development Programme.

This breadth matters because leadership is not one personality type.

A student can lead through culture, care, sport, class community, service or whole-school responsibility.

The common thread is ownership.

What Families Can Borrow From Nan Chiau’s Learning Design

  • Teach technology through real problems.
  • Use Design Thinking before building solutions.
  • Make bilingualism cultural and intellectual, not mechanical.
  • Give advanced language learners literature and real audiences.
  • Use current Singapore issues as Humanities material.
  • Build talent pathways progressively.
  • Let leadership take many forms.

The eduKateSG Learning Connection

Nan Chiau’s curriculum is almost a direct example of the eduKateSG education Ouroboros.

Language improves access to knowledge. Science and Mathematics improve technological capability. Design Thinking improves the human interface. Better technology expands what students can create. Humanities and culture help them understand the society in which those creations will operate.

Education improves technology use. Technology then creates new possibilities for education.
