What is so Awesome About Zhonghua Primary School | 2026-2027 Edition

Three primary students in matching blue pinafores work together over open books at a classroom table, with colourful stationery and lesson notes on a whiteboard.

Did you know that Zhonghua Primary School can trace its roots to Singapore’s first Chinese-medium girls’ school?

Chung Hwa Girls’ School was founded in 1911 at Mohamed Sultan Road.

That history gives Zhonghua a remarkable place in Singapore education.

But the school’s current 2026 identity is just as interesting.

Its vision is A Learner. A Thinker. A Leader. Its THINKnovate programme develops STEM capability through Design Thinking, coding and prototyping. Its Green Education Movement turns sustainability into action. Its Outdoor Adventure, Leadership Building and Environmental Education programme grows leadership progressively from lower-primary navigation and safety to upper-primary challenge and resilience.

So what is so awesome about Zhonghua Primary School?

It is the way the school connects curiosity, thought and leadership across both heritage and future-ready learning.

Independent eduKateSG profile checked on 4 October 2026. This is not a ranking or school-endorsed publication. Programme details can change; families should use current school and MOE information for cohort-specific decisions.

The Quick Answer: What Makes Zhonghua Primary School Stand Out?

  • THINKnovate develops STEM and Design Thinking. Pupils code, build, test and improve solutions.
  • GEM@ZPS develops environmental leadership. Pupils move from learning about environmental issues to taking action.
  • OLE develops leadership through outdoor challenge. Experiences become progressively more demanding across six years.
  • PAL gives Primary 1 and 2 broad developmental exposure. Outdoor Learning, Visual Arts, Sports and Games, and Speech and Drama are all included.
  • The school has deep cultural roots. Its history connects back to Chung Hwa Girls’ School, founded in 1911.
  • The school motto is simple and powerful. “Diligence Before Success.”

Did You Know? Zhonghua’s Story Began in 1911

Chung Hwa Girls’ School was established in 1911 as Singapore’s first Chinese-medium girls’ school.

It later moved to Niven Road and developed into a full school with Primary, Secondary and Pre-University sections.

The primary section eventually ceased operations in 1980 as demand shifted towards English-medium education.

Then came a new chapter.

When Zhonghua Secondary moved to Serangoon Avenue 4 in 1987, Zhonghua Primary was rebuilt next to it to serve the community.

The primary school was officially opened in 1989.

In 2007, Serangoon Garden South School merged with Zhonghua Primary School.

That means the present school carries several layers of Singapore education history.

A Learner. A Thinker. A Leader.

Zhonghua’s current vision is one of the clearest in the school system.

A Learner builds knowledge and habits.

A Thinker questions, reflects and generates solutions.

A Leader uses capability to guide self and others.

The progression is elegant.

Know.

Think.

Act.

Diligence Before Success

Zhonghua’s motto is “Diligence Before Success.”

That wording places process before outcome.

Success is not treated as magic.

It is preceded by repeated effort.

For children, this is a useful learning model.

Practice first.

Improvement follows.

THINKnovate: STEM With Design Thinking

Zhonghua’s current THINKnovate programme develops Critical, Adaptive and Inventive Thinking through STEM-based education.

The programme uses Design Thinking to help pupils understand real-world challenges, generate ideas and create solutions.

Students are developed as Learners, Thinkers and Leaders throughout the process.

Young Thinknovaters Start Early

Primary 1 and 2 pupils begin with coding and STEM concepts using tools such as MataLab, LEGO and Strawbees.

This early exposure matters because young children can understand systems before they understand advanced terminology.

Build.

Try.

Observe.

Adjust.

Those are engineering habits in child-friendly form.

The Thinknovate Challenge: Design, Build, Test

The school runs termly Thinknovate challenges across Primary 1 to 6.

Pupils design, build and test STEM-based solutions.

The key word is test.

Testing turns an idea into evidence.

Once evidence appears, improvement becomes possible.

Project Work Across Primary 1 to 6

Zhonghua’s current THINKnovate structure also includes a four-day curriculum-based project-work programme across all levels.

Project work is useful because the real world does not separate problems neatly into subjects.

A problem may require Science, Mathematics, language, design and teamwork at the same time.

Tier 2: Give Interested Pupils More Depth

Pupils with stronger interest can deepen STEM capability through the Infocomm Technology CCA and external competitions.

This creates a healthy talent structure.

Everyone gets exposure.

Interested pupils get more.

Strong pupils get stretch.

An eduKateSG Example: Building a Cooler Bus Stop

The following is an eduKateSG illustration, not a documented Zhonghua lesson.

Imagine pupils are asked to design a cooler bus-stop shelter.

Science investigates heat and materials.

Mathematics compares measurements.

Design Thinking asks what commuters need.

Engineering builds a model.

English helps explain the proposal.

That is a Learner becoming a Thinker and then acting like a Leader.

GEM@ZPS: Green Education Movement

Zhonghua’s Green Education Movement develops environmental literacy and stewardship.

The school integrates environmental education across curriculum, campus infrastructure, school culture and community partnerships.

Again, the school uses its three-part identity.

Learners understand environmental issues.

Thinkers reflect on challenges and solutions.

Leaders take action.

Green Ambassadors and Advanced Environmental Engagement

Foundation programmes include recycling, upcycling and environmental commemorative events.

More advanced opportunities include student-led outreach, Environmental Science CCA work and external environmental competitions.

This is the same useful ladder:

Awareness.

Action.

Leadership.

OLE: Outdoor Adventure, Leadership and Environmental Education

Zhonghua’s OLE programme uses outdoor experiences to build leadership and environmental awareness.

The programme draws on “The Leader in Me” principles and progresses across primary levels.

Lower-primary pupils learn basic outdoor skills, safety and neighbourhood navigation.

Middle-primary pupils build teamwork in community spaces.

Upper-primary pupils face more challenging experiences such as climbing and canoeing.

Why Outdoor Learning Matters

Outdoor learning creates uncertainty.

The weather changes.

The terrain is uneven.

A team may not agree.

The child has to adapt.

That is why outdoor learning can develop resilience and leadership in ways a worksheet cannot.

PAL: Process Before Product

Primary 1 and 2 pupils participate in PAL across Outdoor Learning, Visual Arts, Sports and Games, and Speech and Drama.

The current programme explicitly values process over product.

That is excellent for young learners.

At this age, exploration matters more than polish.

Mother Tongue: Language Carries Culture

Zhonghua’s current Mother Tongue programme develops listening, speaking, reading and writing together with cultural identity.

Storytelling, drama, cultural activities, reading weeks and competitions give language authentic contexts.

This is particularly meaningful in a school with such deep Chinese-education roots.

CCE: Values, Choices and Citizenship

Zhonghua’s CCE programme develops values-driven individuals and active citizens.

Current learning includes identity, relationships, choices, cyber wellness, mental health, family education, education and career guidance, VIA and contemporary issues.

This creates an important bridge between school and life.

2026 Theme: Learn, Think, Shine!

Zhonghua’s school theme for 2026 is “Learn, Think, Shine!”

It is a cheerful phrase, but it also matches the deeper school architecture.

Learn enough to understand.

Think enough to make sense of what you know.

Then shine by using your strengths well.

What Families Can Borrow From Zhonghua’s Learning Design

  • Put diligence before outcome. Process is more controllable than results.
  • Teach Design Thinking early. Young children can learn to empathise, build and test.
  • Use the outdoors to develop adaptability. Uncertainty is part of learning.
  • Connect environmental knowledge to action. Stewardship is stronger than awareness alone.
  • Give talent a pathway. Broad exposure followed by deeper opportunities helps potential emerge.
  • Let culture travel through language. Mother Tongue learning is also identity learning.
