Why Singaporeans love Yishun is best answered by looking past the caricature. The actual town is a mature northern place built from housing, transport, schools, healthcare, neighbourhood centres and a surprising amount of green-and-blue space.
Yishun Pond sits beside Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. Yishun Park and Yishun Neighbourhood Park preserve traces of older rubber-estate landscapes. Lower Seletar Reservoir Park provides another waterside edge. These places make the town easier to understand as a network rather than a punchline.
Master Plan 2025 also identifies Yishun as one of the existing towns being rejuvenated with new homes and amenities. In July 2026, URA approved a rezoning at Yishun Central for residential use with commercial space at the first storey.
This guide explains possible reasons people value Yishun. It does not claim every resident experiences the town in the same way or treat every internet joke as a description of everyday life.

Start with the Planning Area, Not the Meme
This article uses Yishun as the planning-area reference. Use URA’s Master Plan 2025 boundaries when a precise site matters.
Yishun Central, Khatib, Chong Pang and other local names describe different parts of the wider town. A claim about one should not automatically be extended to all of Yishun.
For students, this is an easy media-literacy lesson. A memorable stereotype can spread farther than a careful description. Check the scale and evidence before repeating it.
The First Reason: Yishun Town Centre Provides a Clear Everyday Core
HDB’s Yishun Town Centre guide places the centre beside Yishun MRT, the bus interchange, Northpoint City and Yishun Town Square.
The value is practical. Transport, food and services can be combined within one central area, although the exact benefit depends on the resident’s starting point.
A family’s local system may use Chong Pang or Khatib for different tasks. The town centre is an important node, not the only meaningful place in Yishun.
The Second Reason: Yishun Pond Brings Water into the Town Centre
NParks describes Yishun Pond Park as a 2.3-hectare park beside Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, open 24 hours and wheelchair accessible.
The park gives a busy central district a quieter water edge. A resident does not need to leave the town centre completely to change pace.
For a student, the pond can support a simple observation task. Record what is visible and distinguish that from assumptions about water quality or wildlife abundance.
The Third Reason: Yishun Park Preserves an Older Agricultural Layer
NParks’ Yishun Park guide states that the park was developed on an old rubber estate and retains tropical fruit trees and natural vegetation.
This gives the town a visible link to land use before modern housing. A park can preserve traces of earlier economic geography without remaining an operating plantation.
For students, compare “this was once part of a rubber estate” with “this park is a rubber estate”. The first is historical; the second would be inaccurate.
The Fourth Reason: Lower Seletar Reservoir Adds Another Kind of Waterside Space
NParks describes Lower Seletar Reservoir Park as a 4.3-hectare waterside park bounded by Yishun Avenue 1 and Lentor Avenue, close to Khatib MRT.
The reservoir park is part of the Northern Explorer Loop and supports both land and water recreation under current operator rules.
Do not treat a reservoir as an unrestricted swimming lake. Public access and water activities follow specific rules.
The Fifth Reason: Yishun’s Parks Are Connected into a Larger Northern Network
Yishun Pond Park, Yishun Park and Lower Seletar Reservoir Park connect with park connectors and the wider northern green network.
This allows residents to think beyond one isolated park. A route can link neighbourhood movement with recreation, although actual continuity should be checked on current maps.
For students, draw the route as segments and mark where a road crossing or change of path type occurs. A network is made from connections, not from names alone.
The Sixth Reason: Yishun Is Entering Another Round of Renewal
URA’s Master Plan 2025 announcement identifies Yishun among existing towns being rejuvenated with new homes and amenities. In July 2026, URA approved a rezoning of land at Yishun Central for residential use with commercial space at the first storey and associated road changes.
This is a planning change, not a completed building. A rezoning enables a different future use; it does not mean residents can already move into new homes.
For students, this is a useful distinction between legal planning status and physical construction.
The Seventh Reason: Yishun’s Real Identity Is More Ordinary—and More Useful—Than Its Online Myth
A town’s reputation can be shaped by selective stories. Everyday reality is less dramatic: school runs, clinic visits, groceries, meals, exercise and commuting.
That does not make the town uninteresting. It makes it a good place to teach how anecdotes differ from representative evidence.
A student should ask: is this one event, a recurring pattern or a measured statistic? Those categories should not be merged merely because one story is memorable.
Worked Mathematics: A Park’s Area Does Not Tell You the Walking Distance
Yishun Pond Park is 2.3 hectares and Lower Seletar Reservoir Park is 4.3 hectares. The second figure is larger, but it does not tell us that every walking route there is proportionally longer.
Area measures two-dimensional size. Route length measures distance along a path. Comparing them directly would mix different quantities.
For a classroom extension, ask what additional map information would be needed to compare walking distances.
Worked Science: An Old Rubber Estate and a Present Park Are Different Systems
A fruit tree in Yishun Park may survive from an earlier land-use history. That does not mean the whole park has the same species composition or management as the former estate.
A careful observation records the present tree or habitat first, then uses historical sources for the earlier land use.
Worked English: A Meme Is Not a Population Description
“Yishun is always strange” is an unsupported generalisation. A specific report can describe one event. A dataset can describe a measured pattern. A meme describes a cultural joke.
Students should identify which category they are using before drawing a conclusion about an entire town.
Yishun’s Learning Theme: Replace Reputation with Evidence
Yishun is an especially useful place to teach the difference between what is memorable and what is representative.
In schoolwork, a student may remember one dramatic example and treat it as the rule. Good reasoning asks whether the example is typical, exceptional or simply the first thing that came to mind.
How eduKate Connects This with Learning
eduKateSG tutorials are limited to three students and run for 1.5 hours weekly, with materials and guided corrections. The tutor can help a learner distinguish a repeated weakness from a one-off mistake.
The centre is at 8 Fourth Avenue, near Sixth Avenue MRT, by appointment. This guide does not announce an eduKateSG branch in Yishun.

Sources and Current Checks
Town centre: HDB Yishun Town Centre. Parks: Yishun Pond Park, Yishun Park and Lower Seletar Reservoir Park. Planning: Master Plan 2025 and July 2026 amendment.
These sources were reviewed in the 4 October 2026 editorial audit. Development and access conditions can change. Worked examples are explanatory rather than measured local studies.
Why Yishun Deserves a Normal, Accurate Story
Yishun’s appeal comes from ordinary systems working together: a mature centre, water, parks, schools, healthcare and familiar routes.
For a student, the town offers a valuable lesson in evidence: what goes viral is not automatically what is representative.
