Cause-and-effect questions become unreliable when every event that comes earlier is treated as a cause.
A cause explains why something happened. A trigger starts a change. A result is what follows. A purpose explains what someone intended to achieve. A condition tells what must be true before another action applies. Sequence only tells order.
These jobs can sit close together in the same paragraph. The reader must keep them separate.
The 2026 PSLE English Language syllabus assesses literal, inferential and evaluative comprehension in Paper 2. Cause-and-effect reasoning can appear across all three levels. A reason may be directly stated, inferred from evidence, or evaluated for how well it supports a claim.
This guide owns one narrow job: identify the exact relationship the passage gives, then preserve its direction.
Choose the cause-and-effect difficulty you actually have
If you confuse earlier events with causes, begin with sequence is not cause. If you reverse reason and result, use direction. If you confuse purpose with outcome, use purpose versus result. If “unless” and “if” cause trouble, use conditions. If several causes combine, use multiple causes. If the passage suggests a cause without stating it directly, use inferred cause.

Cause and result answer different questions
Sentence: “The path was closed because a tree had fallen across it.”
Cause: a tree had fallen across the path.
Result: the path was closed.
Question: Why was the path closed? → because a tree had fallen across it.
Question: What happened because the tree fell? → the path was closed.
The same sentence contains both pieces, but the question decides which one belongs in the answer.
Sequence is not automatically cause
“The lights went out. A minute later, the rain became heavier.”
These two events are ordered. The sentence does not say that one caused the other.
“The lights went out after lightning struck the transformer.” gives a causal mechanism.
“After” can mark sequence without cause. “Because” explicitly marks reason. But even without a causal connector, a passage may establish cause through explanation.
Do not add “because” simply because one event came first.
Preserve direction
Source: “The organiser enlarged the sign because several visitors had missed the entrance.”
Cause → visitors missed the entrance.
Result/action → organiser enlarged the sign.
Wrong reversal: “Visitors missed the entrance because the organiser enlarged the sign.”
The same nouns and verbs appear, but the logic is opposite.
A practical test is to ask: Which event already existed, and which event responded to it?
A trigger may start an action without being the deeper cause
“When the fire alarm sounded, the teacher led the class outside because smoke had been detected in the storeroom.”
Trigger: the alarm sounding.
Underlying reason: smoke had been detected.
Result: the teacher led the class outside.
If the question asks what prompted the teacher to start moving the class at that moment, “the fire alarm sounded” may be relevant. If it asks why evacuation was necessary, the detected smoke is the deeper reason.
Different causal layers can coexist.
Purpose is intended result, not guaranteed result
“Mira moved the sign closer to the path so that visitors could see it more easily.”
Purpose: help visitors see the sign more easily.
This does not prove that every visitor later saw it.
“The team tested the new route to reduce congestion.” tells us why they tested it, not whether congestion actually fell.
Questions using Why did they…? can ask for reason or purpose. Read whether the action responds to a previous problem or aims at a future outcome.
Conditions control when a result applies
“The event will move indoors if the rain becomes heavier.”
Condition: rain becomes heavier.
Possible result: event moves indoors.
The sentence does not say the event has already moved.
“The route will remain open unless lightning is detected.” means the route stays open if lightning is not detected.
Do not treat conditional outcomes as completed facts.
A necessary condition is not always a guarantee
“Only registered pupils may enter.”
Registration is necessary for entry, but the sentence does not guarantee that every registered pupil will enter. Other conditions might exist.
“If your form is approved, you may join the activity.” Approval allows participation; it does not force participation.
This distinction prevents comprehension answers from turning permission into certainty.
Some results have more than one cause
“The match started late because heavy rain delayed the teams and one floodlight also had to be repaired.”
Two factors contribute to the delay.
If the question asks for two reasons, include both.
If you mention only the rain, your answer may be incomplete.
If the question asks for the main reason, the passage must provide evidence for priority. Do not decide which cause is more important based on your own assumptions.
Causal chains can span several steps
“A pipe leaked overnight → water reached the storeroom floor → boxes became damp → the club moved the materials upstairs.”
Question: Why did the club move the materials upstairs?
Immediate reason: the boxes or storeroom floor were becoming wet.
Deeper cause: the pipe leak.
The expected level depends on the question wording and passage.
When uncertain, include the causal chain concisely: Because a leaking pipe allowed water into the storeroom and the boxes were getting damp.
Inferred causes still need evidence
“The pavement was dry beneath the bench but wet everywhere else. Arun moved the class bags under the bench.”
Supported inference: he wanted to keep the bags dry.
Unsupported story: he knew a thunderstorm would last exactly another hour.
An inferred cause should explain the action using visible or stated evidence, not a fabricated backstory.
A character’s explanation can itself be evaluated
Passage: “Ravi said he was late because the bus broke down. Later, his friend reminded him that Ravi had actually missed the first bus after leaving home late.”
The passage presents two possible explanations. An evaluative question may ask which is better supported.
Do not treat every quoted reason as narrator-confirmed fact. Ask who is making the claim and what evidence the text provides.
Main practice passage: The Crowded Corridor
The passage and questions are original eduKate teaching material.
1. Every morning, pupils entering the library placed returned books on a trolley just inside the doorway. The arrangement worked well until the school moved a noticeboard closer to the same entrance.
2. The new noticeboard attracted groups of pupils who stopped to read activity announcements before school. At the same time, others were trying to reach the return trolley. The two streams of pupils began to cross in the narrow space.
3. After three mornings of congestion, the librarian moved the return trolley six metres farther into the library. She also placed a small “Book Returns” arrow near the doorway.
4. The aim was to separate pupils who wanted to read the noticeboard from those returning books. The librarian did not want to move the noticeboard because it was visible from the corridor and updated frequently.
5. On the first morning after the change, several pupils walked past the trolley because they were still looking for it beside the doorway. The arrow helped some of them, but two pupils asked the librarian where to return their books.
6. She therefore added a second arrow halfway between the doorway and the trolley. By the end of the week, fewer pupils needed to ask for directions and the entrance area remained clearer.
7. The librarian kept the new arrangement for another month so that she could see whether the improvement continued when new activity notices were posted.
Cause-and-effect questions
- What caused congestion near the library entrance?
- Why did the librarian move the return trolley?
- What was the purpose of the first “Book Returns” arrow?
- Why did some pupils still miss the trolley after it was moved?
- What caused the librarian to add a second arrow?
- What two results were observed by the end of the week?
- Why did the librarian keep the new arrangement for another month?
- Why did she leave the noticeboard in its new position?
- Which event was a trigger for the second arrow rather than the original trolley move?
- Does the passage prove that the new arrangement will always work? Explain.
Worked reasoning
1. Pupils stopping at the new noticeboard crossed paths with pupils trying to reach the return trolley in the same narrow space.
2. To reduce the congestion by separating the two groups of pupils.
3. To help pupils locate the trolley after it was moved.
4. They were used to finding the trolley beside the doorway and had not yet adjusted to the new location.
5. Some pupils still walked past the trolley or had to ask where it was.
6. Fewer pupils asked for directions, and the entrance area stayed clearer.
7. To test whether the improvement continued over a longer period and under changing noticeboard use.
8. It was clearly visible from the corridor and needed frequent updates.
9. Pupils still failing to find the relocated trolley.
10. No. The librarian extends the trial precisely because she wants more evidence about whether the improvement continues.
Causal map of the passage
Noticeboard moved nearer entrance + return trolley already there → two groups cross → congestion.
Congestion → librarian moves trolley.
Trolley moved → some pupils cannot find it → first arrow only partly solves problem → second arrow added.
Second arrow + relocated trolley → fewer questions + clearer entrance.
Short observation period → librarian extends trial.
Mapping the chain prevents one reason from being attached to the wrong action.
Common cause-and-effect traps
Trap: nearest event chosen as cause. Repair: ask whether the passage explains a relationship or merely sequence.
Trap: purpose reported as successful result. Repair: distinguish intended outcome from observed outcome.
Trap: result reversed into cause. Repair: identify response direction.
Trap: conditional result treated as certain. Repair: preserve if, unless, may.
Trap: one cause given when question asks two. Repair: scan for multiple contributing factors.
Trap: quoted excuse accepted as narrator fact. Repair: identify source and corroboration.
Twelve micro relationships
1. “Because the floor was wet, the cleaner placed a warning sign.” → wet floor = reason; sign = response.
2. “The cleaner placed a sign so that visitors would slow down.” → slowing visitors = purpose.
3. “Visitors slowed down after seeing the sign.” → observed result.
4. “If the floor dries, the sign will be removed.” → dry floor = condition.
5. “After lunch, the sign was removed.” → sequence/time; cause not stated.
6. “The sign fell because its base was loose.” → loose base = cause.
7. “The sign fell, so the cleaner replaced the base.” → fallen sign = trigger/reason for repair.
8. “The new base was heavier to improve stability.” → stability = purpose.
9. “The base was heavier and the sign stopped tipping over.” → observed outcome, though broader causality may depend on context.
10. “Unless the wind becomes stronger, the sign will stay outside.” → stronger wind = condition for change.
11. “The cleaner suspected the wind had loosened it.” → suspected cause, not confirmed.
12. “A camera recording later showed a trolley had hit the sign.” → new evidence supports a different cause.
Independent passage: The Repeated Announcement
During the school fair, the hall became noisy enough that some visitors missed announcements about activity times. The organisers first repeated each announcement twice.
This helped people standing near the stage, but visitors beside the food stalls still said they could not hear clearly. The organisers then placed a small speaker near the stalls.
They kept the volume moderate because the food-stall volunteers still needed to speak to customers. After the extra speaker was added, fewer visitors asked what time the next performance would begin.
The organisers did not increase the volume further. Instead, they also wrote the next performance time on a board beside the stalls.
Independent questions
- Why were announcements being missed?
- Why did organisers first repeat each announcement?
- Why was a speaker later placed near the food stalls?
- Why was its volume kept moderate?
- What result followed the extra speaker?
- Why did organisers add a written board instead of only increasing volume?
- Which action had the purpose of helping visitors know performance times without making the area louder?
Independent answer discussion
1. The hall was noisy, so some visitors could not hear the announcements.
2. To make the information easier to hear.
3. Visitors near the stalls still could not hear clearly after repetition alone.
4. So stall volunteers could still speak to customers.
5. Fewer visitors asked about the next performance time.
6. A written board could provide the information without making the area noisier.
7. Adding the written board.
Parent and tutor guide: ask “What job does this detail do?”
When a learner says one event caused another, ask what wording or evidence creates the relationship.
Use cards labelled cause, result, purpose, condition, sequence. Give one sentence and let the learner classify each clause.
Then remove the labels and use a fresh passage.
If the child reverses direction, draw an arrow from reason to response.
If the child treats purpose as proof of success, ask, “Did the passage say they wanted this to happen, or that it actually happened?”
The cause-and-effect card
What happened? Why did it happen? What happened because of it? Was that outcome intended or observed? Is there a condition? Am I treating sequence as cause? Have I reversed the direction? Does the passage confirm the reason or only suggest it?
Good causal reading keeps every event in the job the passage actually gives it.
