A visual text can mention several dates and still have only one registration deadline.
It can say “free” and still have an eligibility condition.
It can say “open to pupils” and still cap the number of places.
It can say “bring one book” and still reject certain types of books.
These details are not background decoration. They control whether, when and how the reader may act.
The 2026 PSLE English Language syllabus lists Visual Text Comprehension as five MCQ items in Paper 2 Booklet A. This guide owns one narrow job: attach each condition, limit, exclusion and deadline to the action it controls instead of treating every date or rule as an isolated fact.
Choose the conditions difficulty you actually have
If you confuse event date with registration deadline, begin with date labels. If “only” gets missed, use eligibility. If a maximum number is mistaken for expected attendance, use limits. If a condition is separated from a benefit, use if/when conditions. If an exception is ignored, use exceptions. If two dates appear, use timeline map.

Every date needs an action label
Visual:
Register by 18 September.
Workshop: 22 September.
Collect materials: 21 September.
Do not store:
18, 21, 22 September.
Store:
18 → registration deadline
21 → materials collection
22 → workshop date
Deadline and event date are different jobs
Question:
“What is the latest date a pupil may sign up?”
Answer:
registration deadline.
Question:
“When does the workshop take place?”
Answer:
event date.
Same visual, different date job.
By, on and before carry different timing relationships
by Friday → Friday is included as the latest stated deadline unless the context says otherwise.
on Friday → action/event occurs that day.
before Friday → earlier than Friday.
Do not treat the three as identical.
Read exact wording.
From and until define a window
Available from Monday until Thursday.
The access period starts Monday and continues through the stated endpoint according to the visual’s wording.
If hours are supplied:
7.15 am–4.00 pm
do not infer access at 6.45 am.
Time windows are conditions on action.
Eligibility asks who may act
P6 pupils only.
Eligible:
Primary 6 pupils.
Not automatically eligible:
P5 pupils, parents, visitors, teachers.
The word only closes the category.
Several eligibility conditions can combine
Open to P5 and P6 pupils who have submitted consent forms.
Needed:
correct level + submitted form.
A P6 pupil without the form may still be ineligible.
A P4 pupil with the form may still be ineligible.
Audience and eligibility are not identical
Poster addressed to:
parents.
Event open to:
P6 pupils.
Parents may be the readers who must submit a form, while pupils are the participants.
Question:
Who should complete the form? → parents.
Question:
Who may attend? → P6 pupils.
A maximum is a cap, not a prediction
Maximum 20 participants.
This means:
no more than 20 places are available.
It does not mean:
exactly 20 will attend.
It does not mean:
the 20th person is automatically confirmed if another condition applies.
Minimum and maximum move in opposite directions
Minimum 10 participants needed for session to proceed.
If only 8 register, the session may not proceed.
Maximum 20 participants.
If 25 register, not all can be accepted.
Do not reverse the threshold.
First-come conditions affect confirmation
Places confirmed in order of registration.
This means early registration has priority until capacity is filled.
It does not necessarily mean:
registration alone guarantees a place regardless of eligibility.
Other conditions may still apply.
If introduces a condition
“Bring an umbrella if the weather is wet.”
Action applies under condition:
wet weather.
Do not convert to:
everyone must bring an umbrella regardless of weather.
Benefit can depend on a condition
“Receive a repair kit if you register by Monday.”
Condition:
register by Monday.
Benefit:
receive repair kit.
Late registration may still or may not be accepted depending on the rest of the visual, but the kit condition is clear.
When can describe timing rather than uncertainty
“Collect your pass when you arrive.”
This assumes arrival and gives action timing.
“If you arrive before 2.30 pm, wait outside.”
This sets a condition.
Do not treat when and if as identical.
Unless creates an exception condition
“The event will remain outdoors unless lightning is detected.”
Default:
outdoors.
Exception:
lightning detected.
Do not mark indoor venue as final unless the exception condition becomes true.
Exceptions override a general rule for a narrower group or situation
General:
All pupils report to the hall.
Exception:
Registration helpers report to the foyer.
If you are a registration helper, the exception controls.
Except removes one item or group from a general statement
All donated books are accepted except textbooks.
Textbooks are excluded.
Do not choose textbooks because “all donated books” appears first.
“Not included” and “not allowed” are different
Lunch not included.
This means lunch is not provided as part of the offer/event.
It does not mean:
participants are forbidden to eat lunch.
Food not allowed in the room.
This is a prohibition.
“Free” may still have conditions
Free admission for registered pupils.
Cost:
no admission fee.
Condition:
registered pupil.
Do not read “free” as “open to everyone with no requirements”.
Offers can be conditional on quantity or timing
First 30 participants receive a bookmark.
Benefit:
bookmark.
Limit:
first 30 participants.
A 31st participant may still join the event if places remain but may not receive the bookmark.
Conditions can create a sequence
1. Register online.
2. Receive confirmation email.
3. Show confirmation at entrance.
If asked what must happen before entry:
read the sequence.
Do not jump directly from registration to attendance if confirmation is required.
Build a timeline map
Visual:
18 Sep: registration closes
20 Sep: confirmation sent
22 Sep: event
23 Sep: feedback form due
This map distinguishes:
before event / event / after event.
A deadline can change
“Registration extended from Tuesday to Thursday.”
Old deadline:
Tuesday.
Final deadline:
Thursday.
Question:
“What is the latest date?” → Thursday.

“What changed?” → Tuesday → Thursday.
Several rules can interact
Poster:
P6 pupils only.
Register by Friday.
Maximum 20.
First 10 receive a repair kit.
A pupil may:
- be eligible but register too late;
- register on time but not receive a kit because they are 11th;
- receive a place but no kit;
- be ineligible despite early registration.
Conditions apply to different outcomes.

This prevents pupils from mixing rules simply because they appear close together.
Then change one condition and ask what outcome changes.
The conditions-and-deadlines card
Who is eligible? What action is controlled? Which date belongs to that action? Is this a minimum, maximum or exact number? Does a benefit have its own condition? Is there an exception? Is the final state certain, conditional or only planned?
Visual Text Comprehension becomes precise when every rule stays attached to the outcome it controls.
