A Good Investigation Separates Four Things
- Observation: what is actually present in the evidence?
- Interpretation: what might that observation mean?
- Hypothesis: what explanation could generate the pattern?
- Conclusion: what does the evidence currently justify saying?
Many weak arguments collapse these four layers into one. Research keeps them apart long enough for alternatives, tests and contradictions to remain visible.

Not Knowing Is a Research State
“We do not know” is sometimes the most accurate conclusion available. It does not mean inquiry failed. It can mean the available evidence does not distinguish between competing explanations strongly enough yet.
The discipline is to keep an unknown from silently becoming a fact merely because repetition, authority, familiarity or desire makes one story feel comfortable.
A good unknown is bounded: we know what is missing, why it matters, and what evidence would move the answer.
A Basic Inquiry Loop
Question → observation → competing explanations → discriminating evidence → test → update → communicate limits → ask again.
Strong inquiry tries to generate evidence that would make plausible explanations behave differently. Merely collecting more examples that fit the preferred story is not enough.
