Research, Observe and Experiment: Inquiry Vocabulary for Young Learners

Inquiry begins when a child has a question and does not stop at the first answer. They may research what is already known, observe what is happening, design a simple experiment, take a note, compare results and discover something new to them.

Research Is Different From Guessing

If a child wonders what caterpillars eat, they can guess, but research means checking books, trusted resources or knowledgeable adults. It connects curiosity to evidence already available.

Observation Is Evidence Collected With Attention

“The plant looks different” is a beginning. “The new leaf is longer and lighter green than yesterday” is a stronger observation because it identifies what changed.

Experiment Means Testing an Idea

At Primary 2, an experiment can be simple: place two ice cubes in different locations and observe which melts faster. The important language is question, prediction, observe, compare and result.

Notes Protect Memory

A short note lets the child return to evidence later. A date, drawing, measurement or one precise sentence can be enough.

Comparison Creates Meaning

Children learn more when they compare before and after, one plant with another, one shadow with another, or one result with a prediction. Comparison turns isolated observations into patterns.

Discovery Can Mean Learning Something New to You

Children should not believe discovery requires inventing something nobody has ever known. Finding out why a shadow changes or how a seed grows is a genuine discovery in the learner’s own knowledge world.

A Simple Inquiry Cycle

  1. Ask a question.
  2. Research what is already known.
  3. Make an idea or prediction.
  4. Observe or experiment.
  5. Take notes.
  6. Compare what happened.
  7. Explain what was discovered.

Inquiry Vocabulary Helps Children Explain How They Know

The deeper learning is not the individual terms. It is the ability to say, “I think this because I observed…” or “Our experiment showed…” That language separates evidence from guesswork.

Phase 4 Deepening: Research, Observation and Experiment Answer Different Kinds of Questions

Children become more independent learners when they can choose the right route for the question. If the answer already exists in a book, research may be appropriate. If the child needs to describe what is happening now, observation matters. If an idea can be tested by changing or comparing conditions, a simple experiment may help. These are related inquiry tools, but they are not interchangeable.

Research Needs a Source, Not Just an Answer

At Primary 2, source evaluation can be simple. Ask, “Where did this information come from?” A school book, library book, museum or educational resource, teacher or knowledgeable adult may be more useful than an unexplained claim. The child does not need a formal citation system yet; they need the habit of connecting information to a source.

Notes Should Capture Evidence, Not Everything

A note is useful when it preserves a detail that will matter later. Encourage short records: date, drawing, measurement, one fact or one observation. Copying whole paragraphs can hide whether the child understood what was important.

An Experiment Needs a Comparison

“I put ice in the sun and it melted” is an observation. “I put one ice cube in the sun and one in the shade, then compared which melted faster” begins to function as an experiment because two conditions are being compared. Keep experiments simple and safe; the language of comparison is the important educational gain.

Prediction Is Not the Same as Result

Before testing, the child may say, “I predict the ice in the sun will melt faster.” After testing, the result may agree or disagree. Teach children to keep those stages separate. A prediction can be reasonable and still turn out differently. Learning comes from comparing the prediction with evidence.

A Small Inquiry Record

  1. Question: What do I want to find out?
  2. Method: Research, observe or experiment?
  3. Prediction or starting idea: What do I think?
  4. Evidence: What did I read, see or measure?
  5. Result: What happened?
  6. Explanation: What did I learn, and what am I still unsure about?

Inquiry Vocabulary Gives Children a Language for “How Do We Know?”

That habit prepares children for much deeper learning later without making Primary 2 unnecessarily technical.
