SEC English Examination Preparation | Vocabulary Words For Distinctions Vol 0004 | Cohesion: Connecting Ideas Without Losing Logic

A smiling student in a blue pinafore holds a pencil over an open book at a classroom desk, with textbooks, a whiteboard and a sunlit window nearby.

Cohesion is not the act of inserting more linking words. It is the accurate signalling of relationships between ideas. Volume 0004 focuses on vocabulary that helps a reader follow addition, contrast, concession, cause, consequence, sequence and qualification.

Vocabulary Words for Distinctions Vol 0004

  1. Consequently — as a result of what has just been stated.
  2. Nevertheless — despite the preceding point.
  3. Conversely — introducing an opposite or reversed relationship.
  4. Similarly — showing an important likeness.
  5. Whereas — setting two facts or situations in contrast.
  6. Moreover — adding a further supporting point.
  7. Accordingly — in a way that follows from the situation or reasoning.
  8. Subsequently — later in time or sequence.
  9. Specifically — narrowing a general statement to a precise point.
  10. Admittedly — acknowledging a point before developing or qualifying the argument.
  11. Alternatively — introducing another possibility or option.
  12. Ultimately — marking the final or most important result after other stages or considerations.

The distinctions that matter

These words are useful because they prevent broad, vague English. Consequently, Nevertheless, Conversely, Similarly, Whereas, Moreover do different jobs. Learn the boundary, not only the definition. Ask what the sentence is claiming, how strong the evidence is, who the audience is, and what relationship the next sentence must express.

SEC English application

For 2027 SEC English, students work across writing, comprehension, listening and oral communication at the relevant G1, G2 or G3 subject level. Vocabulary therefore has to survive more than a list: it must help the learner understand, select, explain and communicate. Use the official SEAB syllabus pages for the student’s examination year and subject level.

Model

The courtyard offers more space; however, the nearby rehearsal may interfere with discussion. The seminar room is smaller but can accommodate the group. Accordingly, it is the more practical choice for this particular activity.

Error repair

Too broad or inaccurate: “The room is quiet. Consequently, it has thirty chairs.”

Repaired: “The room is quiet, and it has thirty chairs. Consequently, it may suit an activity that requires both discussion and seating for the group.”

The repair is better because it changes the meaning that needed repair rather than decorating the original sentence. Distinction-level vocabulary should make a claim more exact, not merely longer.

Composition practice

Write one paragraph about a school, community or technology decision. Use no more than three target words. Underline each one and write a five-word reason for the choice. If your only reason is “it sounds advanced”, remove it. Then replace one target word with a nearby alternative and explain what changes.

Comprehension practice

Take a paragraph from current reading. Find one word that controls certainty, evidence, relationship or tone. Paraphrase it in plain English. Then explain what would change if the writer had chosen a stronger or weaker alternative. Keep the answer tied to the passage.

Oral practice

Answer a question for one minute. Give a position, reason and example. Then answer a follow-up that challenges your first view. Use target vocabulary only where it comes naturally. If the exact word disappears, paraphrase and continue.

Five-word mastery loop

  1. Choose five words from this volume.
  2. Explain them without copying.
  3. Give one natural phrase for each.
  4. Use three in fresh sentences.
  5. Compare two near-neighbours.
  6. Return later and retrieve them again.

Next standard

Do not measure mastery by whether you recognise the word on this page. The word is becoming useful when you can explain it, choose it, use it naturally, reject it when it does not fit, and retrieve it later in a different task.
