ULD FAQ: Clearing Misinterpretation and Locking the Standard

This page exists to prevent drift.

Universal Learning Diagnostics (ULD) is designed to be stable and immutable. The questions below address the most common misunderstandings that cause frameworks to wobble over time.

What Exactly Does ULD Diagnose?

ULD diagnoses human learning capability states.

It does not judge intelligence, motivation, effort, or character.
It measures how learning holds up across three universal axes:

  • Depth (understanding integrity)
  • Load (performance stability under constraint)
  • Transfer (generalisation across new contexts)

These are capability states, not identities.

Is ULD Only for Students?

No.

ULD applies to humans, not schooling stages.

The same failure modes appear in:

  • school learning
  • workplace training
  • professional skill plateaus
  • communication breakdowns
  • decision errors under pressure
  • performance collapse in real situations

Students are one subgroup of humans. ULD remains valid across childhood, adulthood, and lifelong learning.

Why Does ULD Not Use a 0–100 Score?

Because 0–100 creates false precision.

A numerical score implies:

  • exact comparability across tasks
  • stable measurement resolution
  • continuous accuracy

Human learning does not behave this way.

ULD uses bands because bands reflect real performance thresholds, not artificial decimals.

Depth B2 vs B3 is meaningful.
Depth 63 vs 67 is not.

Can I Still Show a 0–100 Number?

Only as a display layer, never as the diagnostic truth.

If a number is used, it must be a fixed mapping from bands, for presentation only:

  • Band 0 → 0–19
  • Band 1 → 20–39
  • Band 2 → 40–59
  • Band 3 → 60–79
  • Band 4 → 80–100

Diagnosis must always remain:
Depth B2 / Load B1 / Transfer B0

Never “73/100”.

Why Are There Only Three Axes?

Because they form a complete basis for learning capability.

Any learning failure can be explained by one or more of:

  • insufficient Depth (representation failure)
  • insufficient Load (execution instability)
  • insufficient Transfer (generalisation failure)

Other factors (motivation, attention, sleep, anxiety, language, health) are upstream causes. They express themselves by degrading Depth, Load, or Transfer.

ULD measures capability states, not causes.

What If a Human Fails for Multiple Reasons?

That is normal.

ULD assumes imbalance, not uniform weakness.

A common profile is:

  • Depth B3
  • Load B1
  • Transfer B0

This explains why understanding exists but performance fails.

ULD handles this by:

  1. identifying the bottleneck
  2. repairing in the fixed order: Depth → Load → Transfer
  3. verifying with retests

Does ULD Replace Teaching Methods or Pedagogy?

No.

ULD does not teach.
ULD does not prescribe methods.
ULD does not compete with pedagogy.

ULD answers one question:
Why is this human stuck right now?

Methods are applied after diagnosis.

Can ULD Be Wrong?

Yes — and that is intentional.

ULD is falsifiable.

A diagnosis is valid only if it:

  • predicts retest outcomes
  • fails predictably when conditions change
  • can be verified through simplify / constrain / vary tests

If retests contradict the diagnosis, the diagnosis must be revised.

This is how ULD avoids becoming ideology.

What Happens If the Task or Environment Changes?

Then Load and Transfer are expected to change.

ULD always applies to a defined task interface:

  • format
  • language
  • environment
  • constraint level

Changing the interface does not break ULD.
It reveals where capability is sensitive.

Can ULD Be Used With AI Tools?

Yes.

ULD remains valid with or without AI.

If AI assistance masks a weakness:

  • Depth may appear higher than it is
  • Load may temporarily stabilise
  • Transfer may collapse when AI is removed

ULD can detect this by retesting without assistance.

Is ULD Cultural or System-Specific?

No.

ULD does not depend on:

  • national curricula
  • grading systems
  • exam boards
  • teaching styles
  • cultural norms

It measures human capability constraints that remain constant across systems.

Why Must ULD Be Immutable?

Because downstream systems depend on it.

If ULD keeps changing:

  • Education OS becomes unstable
  • Vocabulary OS loses calibration
  • diagnostics drift
  • comparisons break

ULD is a measurement standard. Measurement standards must not move.

How Does ULD Fit Into the Larger eduKateSG Stack?

ULD is the diagnostic layer.

  • Education OS explains how learning works
  • Vocabulary OS explains how language functions as a subsystem
  • ULD explains where learning breaks and how to repair it

Planet-level systems may reference ULD, but ULD itself remains unchanged.

Final Lock Statement

Universal Learning Diagnostics is complete by design.

  • The axes do not change
  • The bands do not change
  • The protocol does not change

Only applications evolve.

That is how ULD remains usable across school, work, and life.

ULD v1.0 is now sealed.
