A syllabus is not a textbook, a revision timetable or a guarantee of what your school will teach in a particular month.
It is a map of the subject: what knowledge is examined, what mathematical processes are expected, and what candidates are ultimately required to do with that knowledge.
Students who read only the topic list miss half the syllabus. A-Math is also about recognition, reasoning, communication, method selection and application.
Start with the Correct Examination Year and Subject Level
Before reading anything else, confirm which syllabus actually belongs to the student.
From 2027, SEC uses:
- G3 Additional Mathematics — K341, reference code 4049;
- G2 Additional Mathematics — K232, reference code 4051.
Older pages may refer to O-Level 4049 or N(A)-Level 4051 because those were the historical examination names. Do not assume every resource labelled “A-Math” is written for the same subject level.
Layer 1: Read the Aims
The aims tell you what kind of mathematician the syllabus is trying to develop.
For G3 A-Math, the broad intention includes stronger mathematical knowledge, reasoning, problem solving, communication and preparation for higher Mathematics and other quantitative subjects.
This matters because the subject is not designed only to test whether a student can copy a procedure.
If the syllabus aims include reasoning and application, your study plan must eventually include reasoning and application.
Layer 2: Read the Content Strands
G3 Additional Mathematics is organised around three major mathematical strands:
Algebra
- quadratics;
- equations and inequalities;
- surds;
- polynomials and partial fractions;
- binomial expansion;
- exponential and logarithmic functions.
Geometry and Trigonometry
- trigonometric functions, identities and equations;
- coordinate geometry;
- geometrical reasoning and proof.
Calculus
- differentiation;
- rates of change;
- stationary points and optimisation;
- integration;
- applications specified by the syllabus.
The topic list tells you what exists. It does not tell you which topics are easiest, which your school teaches first, or which weakness is currently costing the most marks.
Layer 3: Read the Prerequisites
A-Math assumes prior Mathematics knowledge. That statement should change how students revise.
For every A-Math topic, ask what it stands on.

This is why the syllabus should be read as a dependency graph, not a flat checklist.
Layer 4: Read the Assessment Objectives
The assessment objectives describe what candidates must do with the content.
Typical demands include:
- use standard mathematical techniques;
- interpret mathematical information;
- translate between forms;
- make connections across topics;
- formulate and solve problems;
- reason and communicate mathematically.
This creates a useful distinction:
Knowing a technique is AO-level preparation only if you can also recognise, select and apply it when the question changes.
Layer 5: Read the Examination Instructions
Examination instructions matter because they affect execution.
- paper duration;
- calculator rules;
- answer accuracy conventions;
- whether essential working must be shown;
- formulae provided;
- the structure and number of papers.
These details can change by examination year. Always verify them from the current official syllabus instead of copying them from an old tuition page.
Do Not Confuse National Syllabus Order with School Teaching Order
The syllabus lists the complete subject. Schools can distribute topics differently across Sec 3 and Sec 4.
This is especially important for school examinations. A national syllabus may contain calculus, but a particular Sec 3 EOY paper may not test calculus because that school has not taught it yet.
For an upcoming school assessment, use three documents together:
- the national syllabus;
- your school’s scheme or stated examination scope;
- your own marked work showing current strengths and weaknesses.
How to Turn the Syllabus into a Revision Map
Create one row per topic and add five columns:

This produces a much more useful revision picture than “chapter completed”.
Four Levels of Topic Readiness
Level 1 — Definition and Form
Do you know what the objects, notation and relationships mean?
Level 2 — Standard Technique
Can you perform the normal procedure accurately?
Level 3 — Recognition and Selection
Can you identify when the technique is useful if the chapter label is removed?
Level 4 — Transfer
Can you use the idea when the representation, context or combination changes?
Students often think a topic is “done” at Level 2. Examinations frequently expose the missing Level 3 and Level 4 capabilities.
How to Read G2 and G3 Without Turning Them into Status Labels
G2 and G3 Additional Mathematics are different subject levels with different breadth and depth.
The useful question is not “Which is prestigious?” It is:
Which syllabus is the student actually taking, and what capabilities does that syllabus require?
Use the correct subject-level document when selecting resources and past questions.
How Parents Should Use the Syllabus
Parents do not need to teach the syllabus themselves.
Use it to ask better questions:
- Is this topic actually in my child’s subject-level syllabus?
- Has the school already taught it?
- Which older skill does it depend on?
- Is my child failing the concept or the algebra underneath it?
- Can the child solve changed versions?
- Is the tuition programme using the current syllabus rather than an old PDF?
How Tutors Should Use the Syllabus
A tutor should not merely tick off chapters.
The syllabus should help the tutor map:
- content coverage;
- dependencies;
- assessment demand;
- required representations;
- reasoning expectations;
- where topical practice should transition into mixed practice;
- what should be retested later.
Common Syllabus-Reading Mistakes
- Mistake: treating every listed topic as equally weak.
Repair: diagnose from real work. - Mistake: assuming the syllabus order is the school order.
Repair: check the school scope. - Mistake: memorising chapter names without reading assessment objectives.
Repair: include recognition, reasoning and transfer. - Mistake: using a 2024 or 2025 document as current policy.
Repair: verify the student’s examination year. - Mistake: assuming G2 and G3 are interchangeable.
Repair: use the correct subject-level document.
