Young learners often know the object but still confuse who it belongs to. This practice lab trains the language of ownership and reference: mine, yours, his, hers, ours and theirs.
This is an original Primary 1–2 vocabulary supplement. It is not an official examination paper and does not replace the existing Primary 1 and Primary 2 vocabulary owners.
Worked example
“This pencil belongs to me.” → “This pencil is mine.”
“That bag belongs to Ravi.” → “That bag is his.”
“These books belong to the two girls.” → “These books are theirs.”
The pronoun replaces the longer ownership phrase. It must still point to the same owner.
Practice A: choose the owner word
A1. This ruler belongs to me. It is ______.

Answers: mine, yours, hers, his, ours, theirs.
Practice B: avoid name confusion
Read: “Lina handed Mei her book.” Whose book is it? The sentence can be unclear without context. Ask the learner to rewrite it so the owner is explicit: “Lina handed Mei Lina’s book,” or “Lina handed Mei Mei’s book.”
This shows that pronouns are useful only when the reader can identify the reference.
Practice C: one object, two speakers
Speaker A says, “This is my bag.” Speaker B points to the same bag and says, “That bag is yours.” The word changes because the speaker changes.
Role-play with a pencil and book. Ask the child to switch between mine and yours correctly.
Practice D: ours and theirs
“This table belongs to our team.” → “The table is ours.”
“That table belongs to the other team.” → “The table is theirs.”
Ask the child to explain the group boundary.
Return task
Later, use new objects and owners without displaying the target words. Ask for three sentences using mine, hers and theirs.
