Secondary 1–2 Vocabulary Practice: Analogy Relationships — Part–Whole, Cause–Result, Function and Degree

An analogy asks the learner to notice a relationship, not merely two familiar words. Wheel is to bicycle is different from rain is to flood, and both are different again from knife is to cut.

This Secondary 1–2 practice guide develops four recurring analogy relationships: part–whole, cause–result, object–function and degree. The goal is to make the hidden relationship visible so learners can reason through unfamiliar vocabulary rather than guess from surface similarity.

Why Analogy Questions Feel Harder Than They Look

The words themselves may be simple. The difficult part is often identifying the exact relationship.

Consider:

page : book

A weak response may say, “Both are about reading.”

A stronger response says, “A page is a part of a book.”

Once the relationship is named, the learner can search for another pair with the same structure.


The Hidden Vocabulary Problem: Topic Similarity Is Not Relationship Similarity

Students often choose an answer because the words belong to the same topic.

doctor : hospital and teacher : school may both involve person-to-workplace relationships.

But doctor : medicine is not the same relationship simply because the words remain in the same topic.

The test is not “Do these words go together?” It is “Do they go together in the same way?”


1. Part–Whole Relationships

A part belongs within a larger whole.

Examples:

  • wheel : bicycle;
  • chapter : book;
  • branch : tree;
  • keyboard : computer.

Worked example

Petal : flower :: page : ?

If petal is part of flower, page should be part of a larger whole.

Answer: book.


2. Cause–Result Relationships

One event contributes to or produces another.

Examples:

  • heavy rain : flooding;
  • practice : improvement;
  • collision : damage;
  • heat : expansion in an appropriate context.

Be careful: sequence alone is not enough. If Event B comes after Event A, that does not automatically prove A caused B.

Worked example

spark : fire :: infection : ?

Possible answer: illness, if the intended relationship is a cause leading to a result. Context still matters.


3. Object–Function Relationships

The relationship identifies what something is commonly used to do.

Examples:

  • knife : cut;
  • thermometer : measure temperature;
  • key : unlock;
  • filter : remove selected material from a flow or mixture.

One object may have several functions, so the analogy must use the function intended by the question.


4. Degree Relationships

Words can describe similar meanings at different intensities.

Examples:

  • warm : hot;
  • annoyed : furious;
  • tired : exhausted;
  • concerned : alarmed.

This relationship is not simply synonymy. The second word usually expresses a stronger or weaker degree.


A First-Principles Analogy Method

  1. Say what the first word is.
  2. Say what the second word is.
  3. Write one short relationship sentence.
  4. Apply that sentence to the candidate answer.
  5. Reject answers that fit the topic but not the relationship.

Example

engine : car :: heart : body

Possible relationship sentence: “The first is a central component that helps the larger system operate.”

The sentence is not scientifically identical in every detail, but it reveals the intended structural comparison more clearly than “both are important.”

Options: library, book, author, paper.

Book is best because a page is part of a book. Paper is related in material, author in production, and library in location/collection—but none preserves the part–whole relationship.


Practice D — Build Your Own Analogy

Create one analogy for each relationship:

  • part–whole;
  • cause–result;
  • object–function;
  • degree.

Then explain the relationship in one sentence. This is harder than selecting an answer and reveals whether the learner actually controls the pattern.


Common Secondary 1–2 Analogy Errors

Choosing by topic

The student sees two science words and assumes they form the right pair.

Reversing direction

Wheel is part of bicycle is not identical to bicycle is part of wheel.

Using vague relationship language

“They are connected” is rarely specific enough.

Ignoring degree

Two near-synonyms may differ sharply in intensity.

Inventing causation

Words that often occur together are not automatically cause and result.
