One small word can change the size of a claim. All, most, many, some, few and none do not merely decorate a sentence; they tell the reader how widely a statement applies.
This original Secondary 3–4 vocabulary practice lab trains quantifier precision and scope. It is not an official examination paper and does not replace the existing Secondary 3 or Secondary 4 vocabulary owners.
Why scope matters
Compare:
“Some students preferred the new timetable.”
“Most students preferred the new timetable.”
“All students preferred the new timetable.”
These statements make progressively broader claims. A writer must not move from one to another without evidence.
Worked example: not all does not mean none
Original: “Not all participants completed the task.”
The minimum justified conclusion is that at least one participant did not complete it. The sentence does not tell us that nobody completed it.
Faulty paraphrase: “None of the participants completed the task.” This changes the scope dramatically.
A practical quantifier map
All means every member of the relevant group. None means zero members. Some means at least one and leaves the exact proportion open. Most means more than half in ordinary quantitative use. Few signals a small number relative to the relevant group or expectation. Many signals a relatively large number, but it is less exact than a numerical proportion.
Words such as several, a minority, a majority, nearly all, at least and no more than can provide finer control.
Practice A: choose the strongest justified quantifier
A1. 18 out of 20 participants agreed. Which is safest: some, most, nearly all, all?
A2. 3 out of 30 participants reported a problem. Which is safest: few, most, all?
A3. The report says only that at least one user experienced an error. Which is justified: some users or most users?
A4. 30 out of 30 submitted the form. Which is supported: all?
Suggested answers: nearly all for A1, few for A2 if the context allows that relative description, some users for A3, and all for A4.
Practice B: preserve numerical scope
Original: “Seven of the ten teams completed the challenge.”
Faithful: “Most teams completed the challenge.”
Unfaithful: “Nearly all teams completed the challenge.” Whether seven out of ten counts as nearly all would overstate the proportion in this context.
Original: “Two of the ten teams withdrew.”
Faithful: “A minority of teams withdrew.”
Do not replace an exact number with a vague quantifier if the number itself is important to the task.
Practice C: scope changes with the noun phrase
Compare:
“All students in the class submitted the form.”
“All students submitted the form.”
The second sentence may be interpreted as a much wider population if the context does not restrict the group. Scope depends not only on the quantifier but on the noun phrase it modifies.
Rewrite broad statements so the population is explicit: “Most respondents in the 40-person survey…” rather than “Most people…”
Practice D: at least and at most
“At least 12 students attended” means 12 or more. “At most 12 students attended” means 12 or fewer. These phrases establish boundaries, not exact totals.
Repair the error: “At least five students attended, so exactly five were present.” The conclusion is not justified. The number could be higher.
Practice E: negation and scope
“Not every solution is practical” means at least one solution is not practical. It does not mean every solution is impractical.
“No solution is perfect” means none meets the standard of perfection.
“Some solutions are not practical” makes a narrower claim than “Most solutions are not practical.”
Ask the learner to create a pair of sentences in which changing only the quantifier changes the conclusion.
Practice F: analytical paragraph
Fictional data: 24 of 30 respondents found the instructions clear; four were unsure; two found them unclear.
A calibrated summary is: “Most respondents found the instructions clear, while a small minority found them unclear and four were unsure.”
An overclaim is: “Everyone found the instructions clear.”
Scope check before submission
Ask four questions: What exact group does this quantifier refer to? Is the quantity known or only described? Am I broadening the population? Does the negative wording reverse or merely limit the claim?
Return task
Later, give the learner these facts: 12 of 20 supported Option A; five supported Option B; three had no preference. Ask for one sentence using most, one using some, and one sentence that would be inaccurate because its scope is too broad.
